We study strong and radiative decays of excited singly heavy baryons using an effective chiral Lagrangian based on the diquark picture. The effective Lagrangian contains a $$U_A(1)$$ anomaly term, which is found to suppress the decay width of $$Lambda_Q(1/2^-) to Lambda_Q(1/2^+)eta$$.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Single-phase nanocrystalline thin films of Er$$_2$$O$$_3$$ (440) has been first prepared using Si (100) substrates by ion beam sputter deposition at 973 K at a pressure of $$<$$ 10$$^{-5}$$ Pa and $${it in}$$-$${it situ}$$ annealing at 1023 K at a pressure of $$approx$$ 10$$^{-7}$$ Pa. Er silicides formed during the deposition are eliminated via the annealing, which results in the single phase and the smooth surface of the Er$$_2$$O$$_3$$ thin films. The epitaxial relationship between Si (100) and Er$$_2$$O$$_3$$ (110) is clarified by X-ray diffraction and reflection high energy electron diffraction.

The disassembly of JT-60 tokamak device and its peripheral equipments, where the total weight was about 6200 tons, started in 2009 and accomplished in October 2012. This disassembly was required process for JT-60SA project, which is the Satellite Tokamak project under Japan-EU international corroboration to modify the JT-60 to the superconducting tokamak. This work was the first experience of disassembling a large radioactive fusion device based on Radiation Hazard Prevention Act in Japan. The cutting was one of the main problems in this disassembly, such as to cut the wielded parts together with toroidal field coils, and to cut the vacuum vessel into two. After solving these problems, the disassembly completed without disaster and accident. This report presents the outline of the JT-60 disassembly, especially tokamak device.

It was decided to revise the book of "Actual Radiation Safety Management", which has been used as a main text for the radiation protection supervisors, in order to reflect the latest amendment of the Radiation Hazards Prevention Act. Then, we revised Chapter 2 "Radiation measurement" and Chapter 3 "Measurement and estimation of exposed dose" of the book, which were the writing parts of the current version, so as to incorporate the most up-to-date information. Main subjects of these revises were the change of radiation and tissue weighting factors in the 2007 recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), update of the information about survey meters and personal dosimeters, clarification of sentences and so on.

This report describes the results of the conceptual design study of the SlimCS fusion DEMO reactor aiming at demonstrating fusion power production in a plant scale and allowing to assess the economic prospects of a fusion power plant. The design study has focused on a compact and low aspect ratio tokamak reactor concept with a reduced-sized central solenoid, which is novel compared with previous tokamak reactor concept such as SSTR (Steady State Tokamak Reactor). The reactor has the main parameters of a major radius of 5.5 m, aspect ratio of 2.6, elongation of 2.0, normalized beta of 4.3, fusion out put of 2.95 GW and average neutron wall load of 3 MW/m$$^{2}$$. This report covers various aspects of design study including systemic design, physics design, torus configuration, blanket, superconducting magnet, maintenance and building, which were carried out increase the engineering feasibility of the concept.

Correlation between the averaged internal structure and the coercive force of neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) sintered magnets investigated by small-angle neutron scattering

We performed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets to get information on the averaged internal microstructure of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets including the interfacial structure which is a key parameter to achieve a high-coercivity Dy-free Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet. SANS patterns from the Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets measured with a two-dimensional detector of a small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer SANS-J-II in the research reactor JRR-3 were sensitive to the sintering and annealing condition of the samples. These results indicate that the SANS measurement is a promising tool to investigate the correlation between the coercivity and the internal microstructure of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets.

The complex phase transition of the magnetic long-range order in Fe$$_{0.7}$$Co$$_{0.3}$$Si has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurement at low temperatures under an external magnetic field. A variety of scattering patterns, such as ring, crescent-shaped, and diffusive spots, were observed by changing temperature and applying a magnetic field. The results could be interpreted by an analogy of the phase transition of the liquid crystal when the net magnetization is regarded as the director of the liquid crystal.

Fully non-inductive discharge having a relaxed current profile and high bootstrap current fraction f$$_{BS}$$=0.5 has been realized in the high-$$beta$$$$_{p}$$ ELMy H-mode discharge with weak magnetic-shear having q$$_{95}$$=5.8, qmin=2.1, and q(0)=2.4, where qmin and q(0) are the safety factor q at the minimum and the plasma center, respectively. The rest of the plasma current is externally driven by neutral beams (NBs) and lower-hybrid (LH) waves. The safety factor profile evaluated by the motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostic is kept unchanged during 0.7 s at the end of the full current drive (CD) sustainment for 2 s (1.5 times the current relaxation time $$_{tau R}$$). The loop voltage profile is spatially uniform at 0 V at the end of the sustainment. This demonstration shows, for the first time, that the steady sustainment of ful-CD plasma is possible at high f$$_{BS}$$=0.5 and reasonably low q$$_{95}$$=5.8 regime and is stably controlled by appropriate external current drivers. On the other hand, when the combination of bootstrap current and externally driven current does not match to the steady current profile, slight change in the current profile due to current relaxation resulted in appearance of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instability, e.g. neo-classical tearing mode (NTM), in a high beta plasma. This discharge clarifies importance of the demonstration of steady current profile developed here. These discharges contribute to the ITER steady-state operation scenario development.

The concept for a compact DEMO reactor named "SlimCS" is presented. Distinctive features of the concept is low aspect ratio ($$A$$ = 2.6) and use of a reduced-size center solenoid (CS) which has a function of plasma shaping rather than poloidal flux supply. The reduced-size CS enables us to introduce a thin toroidal field (TF) coil system which contributes to reducing the weight and construction cost of the reactor. SlimCS is as compact as advanced commercial reactor designs such as ARIES-RS and produces 1 GWe in spite of moderate requirements for plasma parameters. Merits of low-$$A$$, i.e. vertical stability for high elongation and high beta limit are responsible for such reasonable physics requirements.
