Nihon Genshiryoku Gakkai-Shi ATOMO$$Sigma$$, 55(2), p.83 - 96, 2013/02

Since the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant, units of radiation doses such as Sv have been frequently reported by newspapers. However, it is not exactly understood even by experts on nuclear engineering that there are two different concepts which are the protection quantity such as the effective dose related to a radiation health risk and the practical quantity such as ambient dose equivalents related to measurements. In this special issue, Radiological Protection Quantity, and Operational Quantity and Radiological Protection Quantity, explain the radiation protection dose system including the protection and practical quantities established by ICRP and ICRU. Relation between Dosimeters used at Fukushima etc. and Radiological Protection Quantity describes a method and its problems to measure radiations from Cs on surface and underground using survey meters and personal dosimeters, and convert the measured values to effective doses.

Recently the traceability system (JCSS) of neutron standard based on the Japanese law "Measurement Act" has been instituted. In addition, importance of the neutron dose evaluation has been increasing in not only the neutron capture medical treatment but also the proton or heavy particle therapy. Against such a background, a symposium "Neutron dosimetry in neutron fields; From detection techniques to medical applications" was held on March 29, 2008 and recent topics on the measuring instruments and their calibration, the traceability system, the simulation technique and the medical applications were introduced. This article summarizes the key points in the discussion at the symposium.

Hoken Butsuri, 42(1), p.38 - 52, 2007/03

The expert committee on development and utilization of phantoms had activities from April, 2004 to March, 2006 sponsored by the Japan Health Physics Society. The purpose of the committee was to accumulate and share the latest information concerning phantoms and related technical issues, and to discuss how and for what phantoms should be utilized in future. The committee had twelve meetings and one symposium. Many people took part in the activity including the committee members, observers and other participants; we had a certain number of lectures covering versatile topics and chances to discuss essential problems including sophistication and standardization of phantoms. Some parts of the information we obtained in this activity have been presented in the articles in series.

Many changes were made in the recent upgrade of the experimental fast reactor JOYO to the MK-III design. The core changes which were made to achieve a fourfold increase in irradiation capacity include the introduction of a second enrichment zone, an increase in core radius and a decrease in core height. Performance tests done at low power, during the rise to power, and at full power, which focus on the neutronics characteristics, are presented. These tests include the nuclear instrumentation system response, the approach to criticality and excess reactivity evaluation, control rod worth calibration, isothermal temperature coefficient evaluation, the calibration of the nuclear instrumentation system with reactor thermal power, and the burn-up reactivity coefficient evaluation. The measurements and comparisons with calculated predictions are shown. The design predictions are consistent with the performance test results, and all technical safety specifications are satisfied. The JOYO MK-III core will provide enhanced irradiation testing capability, as well as serve as a test bed for improving fast reactor operation, performance and safety. Through the performance test evaluation, the core characteristics of a small size sodium cooled fast reactor with a hard neutron spectrum are clarified.

Proceedings of 8th European Particle Accelerator Conference (EPAC 2002), p.2376 - 2378, 2002/00

The 3-GeV synchrotron proposed in the JAERI/KEK Joint Project is a rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS), which accelerates a high-intensity proton beam from 400 MeV to 3 GeV at a repetition rate of 25 Hz. The 3-GeV synchrotron is used to produce pulsed spallation neutrons and muons. It also works as an injector for a 50-GeV synchrotron. Since the magnets for the 3-GeV synchrotron are required to have a large aperture in order to realize the large beam power of 1 MW, there is a large leakage field at an end part than a usual synchrotron magnet. In addition, 25-Hz ac field induces an eddy current in magnet components: e.g. a coil, magnet end plates and etc. We intend to use a stranded conductor as a coil conductor so that the eddy current induced in the coil can be reduced. On the other hand, the eddy current induced in the end plates is expected to be large. Therefore, it is important to investigate an effect of the large leakage field and the eddy current to the beam motion around the magnet end part. We have constructed a prototype dipole magnet and field measurement system for this purpose. This paper reports the results of the design and the preliminary test about this magnet.
