We report on the first proton-induced single proton- and neutron-removal reactions from the neutron deficient $$^{14}$$O nucleus with large Fermi-surface asymmetry at $$sim$$100 MeV/nucleon. Our results provide the first quantitative contributions of multiple reaction mechanisms including the quasifree knockout, inelastic scattering, and nucleon transfer processes. It is shown that the inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer, usually neglected at such energy regime, contribute about 50% and 30% to the loosely bound proton and deeply bound neutron removal, respectively.

We describe the direct measurement of actual transmittance of sodium samples with thickness of a 2 mm and 3 mm in a spectral range $$>$$115 nm, resulting in $$>$$50% transmittance of 3 mm thick solid and liquid sodium samples including transmission of a pair of the windows at the wavelength of 120 nm, giving an extinction coefficient of $$sim$$10$$^{-6}$$ to $$sim$$10$$^{-7}$$ which represents the sodium with a few cm thickness to be partially transparent for this wavelength. To confirm the measurement, we perform simple imaging experiments by the ultra-violet light passing through a 8 mm-thick sodium sample to illuminate a mesh as an object, resulting in obtaining a clear image.

Nucleosynthesis in supernovae and neutrino oscillation

Suzuki, Toshio*; Yoshida, Takashi*; Chiba, Satoshi; Kajino, Toshitaka*

Nihon Butsuri Gakkai-Shi, 67(1), p.49 - 54, 2012/01

Neutrino processes play important roles in synthesis of $$^7$$Li, $$^{11}$$B, $$^{138}$$La, $$^{180}$$Ta and other elements in explosive environments realized in supernovae. In order to understand better the neutrino processes, we constructed new shell model Hamiltonians based on recent progress of physics in unstable nuclei near the neutron drip-line. We then applied these Hamiltonians to calculate the neutrino-nucleus reaction cross sections through detailed and careful comparison of nuclear properties with those of relevant experimental data. We can thus carry out precise and reliable theoretical estimate of supernova nucleosynthesis of $$^{7}$$Li, $$^{11}$$B, etc including the neutrino processes. Finally we propose a new method to determine unknown neutrino oscillation parameters, namely the mixing angle $$theta_{13}$$ and the mass hierarchy, by making use of strong dependence of the yields of $$^{7}$$Li, $$^{11}$$B on these parameters.

We have constructed new shell model Hamiltonians based on recent progress of physics in unstable nuclei near the neutron drip-line. The spin responses of nuclei are found to be remarkably improved by the new Hamiltonians. We then applied these Hamiltonians to calculate the neutrino-nucleus reaction cross sections, and obtained more precise and reliable theoretical estimate of supernova nucleosynthesis of $$^7$$Li, $$^{11}$$B, etc including the neutrino processes. Finally we propose a new method to determine unknown neutrino oscillation parameters, namely the mixing angle $$theta_{13}$$ and the mass hierarchy, by making use of strong dependence of the yields of $$^7$$Li and $$^{11}$$B on these parameters.

Characterization of the dissolver sludge of MOX spent fuel at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant

Suzuki, Kazuyuki; Hatanaka, Akira; Samoto, Hirotaka; Suwa, Toshio; Tanaka, Kosuke; Tanaka, Yukiyoshi

Proceedings of International Conference on Toward and Over the Fukushima Daiichi Accident (GLOBAL 2011) (CD-ROM), 6 Pages, 2011/12

The properties of the sludge in dissolver vessels from the reprocessing of ATR-MOX and ATR-UO$$_{2}$$ fuels were investigated on the pilot-plant scale at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP). This sludge is mainly composed of platinum-group elements, zircaloy fragments, and post-precipitates from the dissolver solution. The sludge deposited on the dissolver causes difficulties such as pipe clogging. The characteristics of the sludge collected from the dissolver vessels, which affect the reprocessing operation, were revealed through chemical composition analysis using ICP-AES, and XRD. It was confirmed that the major component of the sludge was zirconium molybdate, and no significant differences between ATR-MOX and ATR-UO$$_{2}$$ fuels were observed in terms of the sludge compositions. In order to gain further understanding of the properties of the sludge, the distributions of Pu and other trace elements were EPMA.

A Phase-field simulation of uranium dendrite growth on the cathode in the electrorefining process

The uranium dendrite growth on cathode during pyroprocessing of uranium is investigated using a novel phase-field model, in which electrodeposition of uranium and zirconium from molten-salt is taken into account. The threshold concentration of zirconium in molten salt demarcating the dendritic and planar growth is then estimated as a function of the current density. Moreover, growth process of both the dendritic and planar electrodeposits has been demonstrated by way of varying the mobility of the phase field, which consists of the effect of attachment kinetics and diffusion.

The Configuration and electronic state of SO$$_{3}$$ adsorbed on Au surface

Journal of Physics and Chemistry of Solids, 72(1), p.10 - 16, 2011/01

We evaluated the adsorption of SO$$_{3}$$ molecule on the Au (111) surface using the first-principles calculations by a slab model with a periodic boundary condition. We find that there are six stable adsorption configurations on the Au surface, where SO$$_{3}$$ molecules are adsorbed above the three-fold fcc and hcp hallow sites and atop site. In two of these configurations, S and two O atoms are bound to the Pt atoms, and in two other of them, all the three O atoms are bound to Pt surface atoms, and then, S atom is bound to Au surface atom on the atop site and O atoms are situated on the hallow sites. In addition, it is found that molecular orbitals of SO$$_{3}$$ and those of Au surface are hybridized in the active metal d-bands region, that the localized molecular orbitals in SO$$_{3}$$ are stabilized, and that the charge is transferred from Au to S 3p by SO$$_{3}$$ adsorption on Au surface though the other interaction of S and O (bound to Au) component with Au is little. In addition, the bond between S and O bound to Au become weak by SO$$_{3}$$ adsorption on Au surface because the charge polarization to O-Au bond weakens the bond between S and O bound to Au. This interaction is assumed to encourage the breakage of S-O bond.

Proceedings of Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and The Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference (CLEO/QELS 2010) (CD-ROM), 2 Pages, 2010/05

We have demonstrated efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) of high energy fundamental Nd:YAG laser pulse energy of the multi-joule (J) level at 10-Hz using high optical quality top-seeded solution growth CsB$$_{3}$$O$$_{5}$$ (TSSG-CBO) crystal. SHG output energy of 1.2 J is obtained with a conversion efficiency of 60%. These results indicate that CBO is a good candidate material for high energy SHG of Nd-doped lasers at the several J level or more with high repetition rate.
