Takahashi, Hiroki; Sawabe, Yuki; Suzuki, Yasuo*; Suzuki, Takahiro*; Kawase, Masato*

Proceedings of 15th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1105 - 1108, 2018/08

J-PARC Linac and RCS Profile Monitor and etc. are devices consisting of moving parts and driving part. In these devices, in order to move the movable part to an appropriate position without damaging it, proper control of the stepping motor used for the driving part is important. Many of the control system hardware of these drive units are used since the early days of J-PARC operation, and there is concern about malfunctions due to aging. In addition, since both VME and PLC are used as controllers, it is necessary to prepare spare parts of both control equipment in maintenance and management. Besides, the control logic differs depending on the kind of controller, VME or PLC. Therefore, maintainability of both hardware and software is an important issue. Then, we decided to proceed with updating the drive unit control system which standardized control system hardware and software. In this paper, the standardization of stepping motor control system in Linac and RCS is detailed.

ACSs are going to increase the beam energy of the J-PARC linac from 181 to 400 MeV. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake damaged the J-PARC facilities and the cavity conditioning was interrupted for two years. After the restoration of the facility, the two ACS cavities (M01 and M11) were conditioned. They achieved to 15-20% above the designed accelerating field of 4.2 MV/m. Since M01 was conditioned six years ago, the conditioning time required for M01 was drastically reduced from that for the first time. During the high-power operation for M11, which is an unique cavity equipped with a capacitive iris in a waveguide, no significant increase of the temperature and the discharge rate around the capacitive iris was observed. The vacuum pressure was sufficiently low (4$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$ Pa) even from the view point of beam loss due to residual gas scattering. The more stable operation can be expected through one-month conditioning before beam commissioning.

We have studied the electronic properties of ferroelectric BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using two complementary bulk-sensitive spectroscopic probes, resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS). Contrary to a previous study, we found no temperature change of a PFY-XAS spectrum at the Ba L$$_{3}$$ edge between room temperature and 150$$^{circ}$$C. This result is not supportive of the possible presence of the displacement around Ba$$^{2+}$$ at the Curie temperature. RXES spectra were measured at the Ti K edge for BaTiO$$_{3}$$, along with SrTiO$$_{3}$$ and La-doped metallic SrTiO$$_{3}$$. The photon energy of the emission peak is found to be nearly constant throughout the absorption edge for all three compounds. We deduce the Ti 3d states to have a delocalized character, in contrast with the Ba 5d states, a property which is consistent with the proposed scenario of the formation of electric dipoles in BaTiO$$_{3}$$.

A simple formula is developed for the evaluation of the helium production amount in the fast reactor fuel. For the subroutine use in the existing fuel behavior analysis code, the formula is designed putting emphasis on simplicity and quickness rather than accuracy. The accuracy of the formula is confirmed by comparing with the detailed calculation with SWAT code, and also with the post irradiation examination (PIE) results of the fuel pin irradiated at the experimental fast reactor JOYO. As a result, the formula is found to evaluate the helium amount with the difference of less than about 10% from the detailed calculation and from the PIE results. Based on these results, the formula is installed in the fuel behavior analysis code for the simulation of helium behavior in fast reactor fuels.

Verification tests on nondestructive assay for $$^{238}$$U content in uranium-contaminated waste drums using $$gamma$$ method

Yokoyama, Kaoru; Sugitsue, Noritake; Muroi, Masayuki*; Suzuki, Yasuo*

Radioisotopes, 62(1), p.1 - 17, 2013/01

Radioactive waste generated from nuclear fuel facilities must have the acceptance criterion of disposal. Although the $$gamma$$ ray measurement technique is expected as the measurement technique, the correction for the influences of the heterogeneous waste distribution was needed. Therefore, the computational technique using the $$gamma$$ ray of two energies emitted from $$^{238}$$U progeny nuclide ($$^{rm 234m}$$Pa) was developed, and verified the validity with simulated waste. As a result, the relative error was less than 20%, and detection limit was 1.2 Bq/g.

We have directly probed the Ba 5d states in the ferroelectric barium titanate BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS) at the Ba-L$$_{3}$$ edge. The results are compared with those of the non-ferroelectric BaSO$$_{4}$$. While the RXES spectra point to a localized character for the Ba 5d states in both compounds, the main peak of the PFY-XAS spectrum, corresponding to the dipolar transitions from 2p to 5d, is found to be significantly broader for BaTiO$$_{3}$$ than for BaSO$$_{4}$$. On the basis of band structure calculations, this broadening is ascribed to strong hybridization between the unoccupied Ba 5d and O 2p states in the ferroelectric. This suggests that the hybridization between the conduction states of the Ba$$^{2+}$$ and O$$^{2-}$$ ions, and not only Ti$$^{4+}$$ and O$$^{2-}$$, plays a central role in determining the electronic structure of BaTiO$$_{4}$$.

High amount of He is generated in MA-bearing fuel during irradiation and storage periods compared with that in U or U-Pu fuel. Laboratory scale experiments, post irradiation examinations and modeling study were carried out in order to understand the He behavior in MA-bearing oxide fuel. Diffusion characteristics of He in single-crystal UO$$_{2}$$ were investigated by the Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry. Effects of the He accumulation on lattice and bulk expansion of oxide pellets were examined by use of alpha-decay of $$^{244}$$Cm. Post irradiation examinations of 0.5%Am-MOX fuel irradiated at a fast test reactor JOYO were carried out, concentrating on the He behavior in the fuel pellets. A model describing the He behavior in MA-MOX fuel was constructed based on the principle processes, such as generation, diffusion, equilibrium and release to outer gaseous phase. By use of the model as a subroutine of a conventional fuel behavior analysis code, the He behavior in MA-MOX fuel for fast reactors was simulated.

Resonant X-ray inelastic scattering experiments have been performed at the Ba-L$$_{3}$$ edge in ferroelectric BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using synchrotron radiation at the BL15XU of SPring-8. An X-ray absorption spectrum of this material was found to be broader than non-ferroelectric BaSO$$_{4}$$. Molecular orbital calculations showed the formation of Ba-O bands in BaTiO$$_{3}$$, suggesting an important role of the Ba-O hybridization in the ferroelectric transition of this material. X-ray emission spectra at the edge showed a localized character of Ba-5d orbitals in BaTiO$$_{3}$$ in spite of the hybridization with O-3p. A few possible applications of the measurement will be also discussed.
