To accurately determine the external exposure dose, it is desirable to examine the analysis of the CO radical intensity. We examined ESR spectra of teeth of 10 macaques captured in Fukushima by two spectrum-decomposition algorithms.

The balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant activity, which is a defense mechanism against oxidative stress, was investigated in the liver and bladder of wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima Prefecture. No significant induction of oxidative stress by exposure to environmental radionuclides after the Fukushima nuclear accident was observed, suggesting that the stress defense mechanism of the organism is activated in some organs.

To enhance energy separation in a counter-current Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube, a newly designed hollow helical fin was inserted into the hot tube of the vortex tube. In this study, the effect of the fin on the energy separation was investigated using three types of the vortex tube, and then computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation has been conducted to understand the experimental results and discuss the flow structure in the vortex tube with the hollow helical fin. As a result, it was found from the experimental data that the fin effectively enhanced energy separation, and that the tube length could be shorten. When the inlet air pressure was 0.5 MPa, the maximum temperature difference from the inlet to the cold exit was 62.2C. The CFD code employing the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) turbulence model was used to analyze the fluid dynamics in the vortex tube. As a result, it was confirmed that the temperature, velocity, and pressure distributions changed significantly at the stagnation point, and that the distributions in the tube with the fin were completely different from those without the fin. It was thought that a strong reversing helical vortex flow with small recirculating vortex structure formed between the fin end and the stagnation point on the cold exit side would enhance energy separation in the vortex tube with the hollow helical fin.

To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

In the case of a nuclear accident or a radiological emergency, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), as a designated public corporation assigned in the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act and the Armed Attack Situation Response Law, undertakes technical supports to the national government and local governments. The JAEA is requested to support to evaluate radiation doses to residents in a nuclear emergency, which is specified in the Basic Disaster Management Plan and the Nuclear Emergency Response Manual. For the dose evaluation, however, its strategy, target, method, structure and so on have not been determined either specifically or in detail. This report describes the results of investigation and consideration discussed in the "Working Group for Radiation Dose Evaluation at a Nuclear Emergency" established within the Nuclear Emergency Assistance and Training Center to discuss technical supports for radiation dose evaluation to residents in the case of a nuclear emergency, and aims at contributing to specific and detailed discussion and activities in the future for the national government and local governments, also within the JAEA.

Wildlife within the alert zone have been exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation for a long and continuous time. In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of raccoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident. This study revealed that the chronic and LDR radiation exposure associated with the FDNPP accident had no adverse effect on the reproductive characteristics and functions of male raccoons.

EuCuSb has a three-dimensional semimetallic band structure as confirmed by band calculation and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, consistent with the nearly isotropic metallic conductivity in the paramagnetic state. However, below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of (8.5 K), the resistivity, especially along the hexagonal axis, increases significantly. This implies the emergence of anisotropic magnetic ordering coupled to the conducting electrons. Neutron-diffraction measurements show that the Eu spins, which order ferromagnetically within each layer, are collinearly modulated (up-up-down-down) along the hexagonal axis below , followed by the partial emergence of helical spin modulation below (6 K). Based on the observation of anomalous magnetoresistance with hysteretic behavior, we discuss the competing nature of the ground state inherent in a frustrated Heisenberg-like spin system with a centrosymmetric structure.

Using the dose response curve, external exposure dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima prefecture were examined. The results suggest that the external exposure dose for the wild Japanese macaques were ranged between 45 mGy to 300 mGy.

The Cryogenics and Magnets group in the Sample Environment team is responsible for operation of cryostats and magnets for user's experiments at the MLF in J-PARC. We have introduced a top-loading He cryostat, a bottom-loading He cryostat, a dilution refrigerator insert and a superconducting magnet. The frequency of use of them dramatically becomes higher in these two years, as the beam power and the number of proposal increase. To respond such situation, we have made efforts to enhance performance of these equipment as follows. The He cryostat originally involves an operation software for automatic initial cooling down to the base temperature and automatic re-charge of He. Recently we made an additional program for automatic temperature control with only the sorb heater. Last year, a new outer vacuum chamber of the magnet with an oscillating radial collimator (ORC) was fabricated. The data quality was drastically improved by introducing this ORC so that the magnet can be used even for the inelastic neutron scattering experiments.

J-PARC Linac and RCS Profile Monitor and etc. are devices consisting of moving parts and driving part. In these devices, in order to move the movable part to an appropriate position without damaging it, proper control of the stepping motor used for the driving part is important. Many of the control system hardware of these drive units are used since the early days of J-PARC operation, and there is concern about malfunctions due to aging. In addition, since both VME and PLC are used as controllers, it is necessary to prepare spare parts of both control equipment in maintenance and management. Besides, the control logic differs depending on the kind of controller, VME or PLC. Therefore, maintainability of both hardware and software is an important issue. Then, we decided to proceed with updating the drive unit control system which standardized control system hardware and software. In this paper, the standardization of stepping motor control system in Linac and RCS is detailed.

The stepping motor control system used in the profile monitor and RCS collimator of J-PARC is configured by VME-based. Most of these pieces of control equipment are in use for more than 10 years. Therefore, countermeasures against aging of equipment are necessary. In addition, it is necessary to implement countermeasures against malfunction of the control system, which is thought to be caused by radiation. In 2016, a malfunction occurred in the motor control system of the RCS collimator. Taking this as a starting point, we began developing a motor control system that can ensure equipment safety even if a malfunction occurs. In this paper, we show the inference of the cause of this malfunction and present details of the developed high-safety motor control system.

However, these type deposits have not been searched in Japan. In this study, Bulk REE abundances (= REE), ion-exchangeable REE (= REE) by ammonium chloride solution, and percentage of REE relative to REE (= REE) in fresh and weathered granite samples in Southwest Japan (i.e., Hiroshima and Shimane Prefectures) were determined. The REE and REE were comparable to those of ion-adsorption type REE deposits in China. Extended X-ray adsorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of REE in original samples and samples after the extraction of ion-exchangeable REE showed that (i) REE in samples with high REE mainly forms outer-sphere complexes and (ii) the remaining REE in the rocks after the extraction forms inter-sphere complexes.

The performance of oxygen sensor with Ag/air reference electrode (RE) and liquid Bi/BiO RE was tested in low-temperature LBE at 300450C and the charge transfer reactions impedance at the electrode-electrolyte interface was analyzed by electrochemical impedance analysis (EIS). After steady state condition, both of the sensors performed well and can be used at 300450C. Bi/Bi/BiO RE has lower impedance than Ag/air RE. Therefore, the response time of the oxygen sensor with Bi/Bi/BiO RE is faster than the oxygen sensor with Ag/air RE in the low-temperature region.

The amount of monitor value tends to increase, because of the increase of accelerator components, or in order to realize the safety and the stable operation. Then, an enormous volume of operation data increases the possibility of occurrence of erroneous operation such as overlooking of monitor value and etc. Then, we started to develop a system to supervise the state of the accelerator and to inform operators of abnormality early. As an initial system, we developed a system to supervise the status of Linac DTQ power supplies and etc. In this initial system, first, the function was created to make the normal range (upper and lower limit values) with reference to the current setting value. Next, the function to inform the alarm condition when the monitor value becomes outside of the normal range was realized. This function is an important function in the initial system. By this realization, we obtained the prospect of development of supervision and alarm system.

In the timing system of J-PARC LINAC/RCS, the ring type Reflective Memory (RFM) network is adopted for data transfer. In June 2016, a data transfer failure occurred due to communication error on the RFM network, and it took a long time to recover. From this experience, we have created the environment to monitor of the RFM network status, and we duplicated the computer which manages the data transfer on the RFM network. In Addition, we have also created the syslog function as an environment to monitor each RFM even if data transfer failure occurs on the RFM network. After these improvements, a trouble occurred in the timing system VME. At the same time, the target device was immediately identified by these functions, and the timing system could be recovered quickly. In this paper, the details of improvement for stable operation in the timing system of J-PARC LINAC / RCS are presented.

We investigated the local coordination structure of Pd(II) adsorbed on -MnO, using X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses indicated that Pd was adsorbed on -MnO through ligand exchange, from Cl coordination to O coordination. Furthermore, curve fitting of EXAFS spectra demonstrated the formation of two different inner-sphere complexes, bidentate-mononuclear and bidentate-binuclear complexes, and this finding was supported by density functional theory calculations. The formation of inner-sphere complexes is reasonable given the relatively large distribution coefficients obtained from adsorption experiments.

The timing system data (delay value, status, etc.) of J-PARC Linac and rapid cycling synchrotron is managed by a computer. After updating this hardware, we encountered the problem of data corruption in the timing system. Therefore, we added a function to the software for the timing system VME and investigated the cause of the problem. The investigation results showed a problem with the network connected PCI-Express reflective memory. We implemented measures for stabilizing the timing system operation based on this result.
