A research project has been conducting thermophysical property measurement of a eutectic melt, eutectic melting reaction and relocation experiments, eutectic reaction mechanism investigation, and physical model development on the eutectic melting reaction for reactor application analysis in order to simulate the eutectic melting reaction and relocation behavior of boron carbide as a control rod material and stainless steel during a core disruptive accident in an advanced sodium-cooled fast reactor designed in Japan. This paper describes the project overview and progress until JFY2022.

This paper describes the project overview and progress of experimental and analytical studies conducted until 2020. Specific results in this paper are the measurement of the eutectic reaction rates and the validation of physical model describing the eutectic reaction in the analysis code through the numerical analysis of the B$$_{4}$$C-SS eutectic reaction rate experiments in which a B$$_{4}$$C pellet was placed in a SS crucible.

One of the key issues in a core disruptive accident (CDA) evaluation in sodium-cooled fast reactors is eutectic reactions between boron carbide (B$$_{4}$$C) and stainless steel (SS) as well as its relocation. Such behaviors have never been simulated in CDA numerical analyses in the past, therefore it is necessary to develop a physical model and incorporate the model into the CDA analysis code. This study focuses on B$$_{4}$$C-SS eutectic melting experiments, thermophysical property measurement of the eutectic melt, and physical model development for the eutectic melting reaction. The eutectic experiments involve the visualization experiments, eutectic reaction rate experiments and material analyses. The thermophysical properties are measured in a range from solid to liquid state. The physical model is developed for a CDA computer code based on the measured data of the eutectic reaction rate and the physical properties. This paper describes the project overview and progress of experimental and analytical studies conducted until 2019. Specific results in this paper are the validation of physical model describing B$$_{4}$$C-SS eutectic reaction in the CDA analysis code, SIMMER-III, through the numerical analysis of the B$$_{4}$$C-SS eutectic melting experiments in which a B$$_{4}$$C block was placed in a SS pool.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Malaria is the major cause of mortality and morbidity in the tropical and subtropical regions in the world. Our previous studies have shown that a series of partial peptides of a Plasmodium falciparum enolase have antigenic reactivity against patients' sera. In this paper, we wish to report nano-encapsulation of a synthetic antigen into bioabsorbable polymer particles and their releasing studies in vitro and in vivo.

A new detection device for evaluating ion energy distributions for laser-plasma ion source is demonstrated. The Imaging Plate (IP) with no protective layer as ion detector device for the Thomson Parabola spectrometeris used. The Imaging Plate Thomson Parabola spectrometer (IPTPS) is applicable for the analysis of the energydistribution of the laser-driven ion beam using an opto-electric digitizing technique.

High energy ions, electrons, and X-ray are generated from ultrashort pulse high-intensity laser-matter interactions. High-energy protons are observed with a thin-foil target irradiated with a high intensity Ti:sapphire laser at the peak intensity of $$sim$$2.7$$times$$10$$^{18}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$. The maximum proton energy is $$sim$$900 keV.

A study of proton emission from a 3-$$mu$$m thick Ta foil target irradiated by$$p$$-, $$s$$- and circularly polarized laser pulses with respect to the targetplane has been carried out. Protons with energies up to 880 keV were observed in the target normaldirection under the irradiation by the $$p$$-polarized laser pulse, which yieldedthe highest efficiency for proton emission. In contrast, $$s$$- and circularlypolarized laser pulses gave the maximum energies of 610 keV and 680 keV,respectively. The difference in the maximum energy between the $$p$$- and$$s$$-polarized cases was associated with the difference between thesheath fields estimated from electron spectra.

Preparation of chelating fiber by repeated use of monomer solution in radiation-induced graft polymerization

A chelating fiber containing an amidoxime group as a chelate-forming group was prepared by radiation-induced cograft polymerization of acrylonitrile and methacrylic acid and subsequent conversion of the produced cyano group into the amidoxime group. The effect of repeated use of monomers for radiation-induced graft copolymerization on the composition of the graft chain and its adsorption capacity for metal ions was determined. The degree of cografting decreased by as low as 10% at the fourth cycle of cografting, compared with an initial degree of cografting of 170%, because the amount of homopolymer formed in cografting was negligibly small at 0.15 g/L of the monomer solution. The repeated use of monomers did not affect the amidoxime group density and the adsorption capacities of zinc and cadmium ions, resulting in the cost reduction of the preparation of the chelating fiber.

The multi-TW laser system "JLITE-X (JAEA Laser system for laser-matter InTeraction Experiment)" was developed for studying on the laser-matter interaction in sub-relativistic regime. Two quasi-monoenergetic charged particle production experiments were conducted after laser system development. The first, we successfully generated quasi-monoenergetic proton beam by using phase rotator which based on the radio-frequency accelerator technique. The quasi-monoenergetic component was observed near 600 keV with 1 TW / 220 fs laser operation mode. The second, we also successfully generated quasi-monoenergetic electron beam with energy of 20 MeV in self-modulated laser-wakefield regime with 3 TW / 70 fs operation mode. These results were indicated that the multi-TW laser is useful for not only plasma physics research but also high-energy particle source and its applications.
