The AVF cyclotron was operated from May 9th in fiscal 2011 and all the planned experiments on April were cancelled due to scheduled blackouts originated from the Great East Japan Earthquake. The total operation time amounted to 3,038.4 hours. The extended operation from Friday evening to Saturday evening was carried out eight times in order to supply the cancellation on April. The regular yearly overhaul and maintenance were carried out.

JAEA-Review 2011-043, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2010, P. 159, 2012/01

The development of the fast single-ion hit system was continued from last year in order to improve the quality of microbeam and single-ion hit at the TIARA cyclotron of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The major subjects were reduction of miss hit, no hit on the targeted point by any ions in the single-ion-hit irradiation, and development of a real-time detection system of single-ion hit. A new microbeam of 400 MeV-Fe with a spot diameter of about 4 $$mu$$m was also developed and supplied to an experiment.

JAEA-Review 2010-065, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2009, P. 173, 2011/01

Microbeam and single-ion hit of 260 MeV-$$^{20}$$Ne$$^{7+}$$ and/or 520 MeV-$$^{40}$$Ar$$^{14+}$$ were utilized to irradiate living biological cells for study of radiation biology, semiconductor devices for study of radiation effects such as Single Event Upset and polymer films for study of micro-fabrication in fiscal 2009 at the TIARA cyclotron. Although these beams were generally supplied smoothly, we still have technical matters to improve for better beam quality. One of the major subjects is instability of microbeam, and another is miss hit, no ion hit around a targeted point. The paper describes investigation of the causes of those as well as development of new ion beams to be available for microbeam and single-ion hit.

ZrN is a possible candidate for the diluent material of the nitride fuel containing minor actinides. In the present study, the lattice thermal expansions of ZrN, DyN and (Dy,Zr)N solid solutions were measured by high temperature XRD, as the analogous fuel material. The average linear thermal expansion coefficients of these nitrides increased from 7.86$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$ to 9.54$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$ K$$^{-1}$$ with increasing Dy fraction. On the analogy with the results on the composition dependence of the thermal expansion coefficients, the preferable effect of ZrN as the diluent material is suggested.

Proceedings of 10th European Particle Accelerator Conference (EPAC 2006) (CD-ROM), p.321 - 323, 2006/00

Wideband low-output-impedance RF system for the second harmonic cavity in the ISIS synchrotron has been developed by the collaboration between ANL (US), KEK (Japan) and RAL (UK). Low output impedance is realized by the feedback from plate to grid of the final triode amplifier, resulting in less than 30 ohms over a wide frequency range of 2.7 - 6.2 MHz. The vacuum tubes in the driver and final stages are both operated in class A. High power test was performed with a ferrite-loaded second harmonic cavity, where the bias current was swept at 50 Hz repetition rate. The maximum voltage of 12 kV peak per accelerating gap was obtained stably at earlier period of an acceleration cycle. A beam test with this system is planned at the ISIS synchrotron soon.

7 patients have been undergoing Intraoperative boron neutron capture therapy (IOBNCT) for malignant glioma at Japan Atomic Energy Institute (JAERI). Post-BNCT MRI studies revealed one local recurrence and two distant recurrences. Distant recurrence is uncommon in the conventional radiation therapy. Symptomatic late radiation necrosis occurred in one case.
