To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

In this study, we compared the calculated cosmic-ray environments on the Earth, Moon, and Mars as well as inside spacecraft on low-earth orbit (LEO) and at interplanetary space. In the calculation, a galactic cosmic-ray model developed in DLR and trapped proton/electron models AP9/AE9 were used for determining the incident cosmic-ray fluxes, and the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System, PHITS, was employed for the cosmic-ray transport simulation in the Earth, Lunar, and Martian systems as well as spacecraft. The virtual International Space Station (ISS) model developed by JAXA was adopted as the representative of spacecraft in the PHITS simulation. This paper focuses on the comprehensive discussions on the difference of cosmic-ray environments and the effective methods of their shielding in various exposure situations.

Not only Gd 4f but also Ni 3d and Ce 4f electrons were magnetic and both magnetic moments of Ni and Ce were coupled anti-parallel to the direction of the Gd magnetic moment. After saturation, Ce magnetic moment decreased over 2 T and this behavior was explained by a spin-flip behavior of the Ce magnetic moment. In addition, sum rule analysis has revealed that the magnetic moments of Gd 4 f and Ni 3d electrons could retain small values of orbital magnetic moments.

The PADLES package is a passive dosimeters which usually consists of two types of passive and integrating dosimeters, a CR-39 plastic nuclear track detector and a thermoluminescence dosimeter. In the ALTCRISS experiments, both tissue-equivalent material CR-39 PNTDs and NAN-JAERI were enclosed in the PADLES packages as radiators for CR-39 to precisely measure a personal exposed doses. We compared the doses obtained by PADLESs with or without the PEs, and with or difference of the two tissue-equivalent materials. The results of space radiation measurements of the ALTCRISS project Phase 1 to 4 using the PADLES system will be reported in this time: Phase 1 experiments was from December 2005 to April 2006, Phase 2 was from April to September 2006, phase 3 was from Sep 2006 to April 2007, and Phase 4 was conducted from May to October 2007.

A possible candidate for the origin of cosmic rays is wakefield acceleration at relativistic astrophysical perpendicular shocks. Substituting an intensive laser pulse for the large amplitude light waves, we performed a model experiment of the shock environments in a laboratory plasma.

An intensive laser pulse was propagated in a plasma tube created by imploding a hollow polystyrene cylinder, as the large amplitude light waves propagated in the upstream plasma at an astrophysical shock. Nonthermal electrons were generated, and the energy distribution functions of the electrons have a power-law component with an index of 2.

The spectra of a comparatively high-density plasma had a bump around 10 MeV. Simple numerical calculations explained the spectra obtained in this experiment. This indicates that the plasma tube has sufficient potential to convert a Maxwellian spectrum to a comparatively narrow spectrum.

After the investigation of the new core arrangement for the JMTR reactor in order to enhance the fuel burn-up and consequently extend the operation period, the "improved LEU core" that utilized 2 additional fuel elements instead of formerly installed reflector elements, was adopted. This report describes the results of the thermal-hydraulic analysis of the improved LEU core as a part of safety analysis for the licensing. The analysis covers steady state, abnormal operational transients and accidents, which were described in the annexes of the licensing documents as design bases events. Calculation conditions for the computer codes were conservatively determined based on the neutronic analysis results and others. The results of the analysis, that revealed the safety criteria were satisfied on the fuel temperature, DNBR and primary coolant temperature, were used in the licensing. The operation license of the JMTR with the improved LEU core was granted in March 2001, and the reactor operation with new core started in November 2001 as 142nd operation cycle.

Development of a superconducting proton linac is in progress in collaboration with KEK. In order to demonstrate cavity performance and to study stable accelerating field in a pulsed operation, a 600MHz superconducting cryomodule has been fabricated. The cryomodule includes two 5-cell superconducting cavities of =0.6 and is designed to perform 2K operation. Cold tests of the cryomodule have been performed at the temperature of 4K and 2K. In the tests, heat leak to the cavities, loaded quality factors, tuning sensitivities, frequency shifts against helium vessel pressure and Lorentz force detuning of the cavities were measured. Most of the measured data agreed with their design values, except for the heat leak and the Lorentz force detuning. As the preliminary horizontal test of the cryomodule, high power RF test has been also performed, where the surface peak fields of 10 and 16 MV/m were achieved in CW and pulsed operation, respectively. Now, the optimization of the RF control system is in progress to demonstrate stable accelerating field in a pulsed operation.
