Proceedings of INMM 54th Annual Meeting (CD-ROM), 10 Pages, 2013/07

JAEA and USDOE (Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)) have been collaborating on spent fuel measurements with a PNAR/SINRD NDA instrument at Fugen, in the course of the NGSI Spent Fuel Nondestructive Assay Project. In this collaboration, LANL's role has been to design and fabricate the detector (integrated PNAR and SINRD system), while JAEA's role has been to undertake the installation of the detector at the appropriate position in the spent fuel pool and to prepare for the actual measurements. In this paper we report the rehearsal of the measurement using a mock-up detector and a dummy fuel assembly in December 2012 and the plan of actual measurements in June 2013 (at the time of submission of this paper).

We developed a new imaging system for observing the water distribution in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) under operation. This imaging system realizes both low noise and high sensitivity imaging and it enables to obtain an image in relatively short exposure time. This imaging system consists of EM-CCD (Electron Multiplication-Charged Coupled Device) camera, a LiF/ZnS scintillator screen and slit system. The EM-CCD camera has wide dynamic range and high sensitivity. The brightness of the scintillator screen is about three times higher than that of conventional type. The slit system was used for reducing the white dot noise caused by primary and/or secondary prompt $$gamma$$ rays. A characteristic test of this imaging system using JARI (Japan Automobile Research Institute)-standard cell was carried out at TNRF. In the results of the test, qualitative and quantitative observation of water behavior in the channel of PEFC was archived by the new imaging system.

We have equipped fuel cell operation system for TNRF at JRR-3 in order to visualize on performance of PEFC. Our system, which is aimed to be used in nuclear facility, is composed by various equipments that give safety in experiments such as hydrogen diluting system and purge system, etc. We confirmed normal operation of our system with JARI-standard fuel cell, and succeeded in visualizing water distribution of fuel cell on performance by our system with neutron radiography.

Neutron radiography is one of useful tools to visualize water behavior in fuel cells under operation. In order to observe the detailed information about the water distribution in MEA and GDL in fuel cells, a high spatial resolution and high sensitivity neutron imaging system are required. We developed an imaging system using the neutron color imaging intensifier and continuously observed water distribution in operating a fuel cell. By using the system, a small type fuel cell under operation was continuously observed at the TNRF in every 20 sec. In the results, the water area was appeared from GDL and MEA, and expanded to the channel of the cathode side. On the other hand, voltage was gradually reduced with the operation time, and steeply dropped. It is considered that voltage drop was caused by blockage of gas flow due to the piling up water in the channel of the cathode side.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

In order to establish the technique fabricating a thin target slab with a real size, thin tantalum-clad tungsten slab with a hole for a thermocouple was fabricated with the high-precision machinery techniques and the HIP'ing method. The ultrasonic diagnostic showed that tantalum and tungsten bond was perfect. The HIP optimum condition was certified by means of the small punch test as already reported. The electrolytic coating technique in a molten salt was developed to make a thinner tantalum cladding on a tungsten target with a complicated shape, in order to reduce radioactivity from tantalum in an irradiated target.

Ta-cladded W is manufactured by HIP method for a proto type solid target in intensified high-energy proton targetary. We have carried the thermal shock test of the target model under the rapid cooling conditions by changing temperatures of target itself and cooling water. At a time of loss of coolant a targetary will be heated by decay heat over kW. Then technical issue is how to recover cooling water without giving damage joint layer between Ta and W. It is confirmed that targetary has no damage if it will be cooled below heated up to 500$$^{circ}$$C.

Influence of thickness of neutron imaging scintillator on spatial resolution

Yasuda, Ryo; Katagiri, Masaki; Iikura, Hiroshi; Sugimoto, Katsumi*; Takenaka, Nobuyuki*; Matsubayashi, Masahito

no journal, ,

For obtaining high resolution neutron images, it is important to improve position resolution of scintillators, which converts neutron into visible light. It is considered that thickness of scintillator film is one of significant factors for determining the position resolution. Using edge spread function method, we evaluated spatial resolution of two types of scintillator with a thinned film. One was made from LiF-ZnS:Ag (LiF-type) with 30 um in thickness, the other was B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$-ZnS:Ag(B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$-type) with 40 um in thickness. The resolution of conventional scintillator "NE426" above 100 um in thickness was also evaluated for comparing to that of LiF-type and B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$-type. Spatial resolution of NE426 was measured as 150 um, and that of LiF-type and B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$-type were below 50 um. Those results show that thinning a scintillator film is effective to improve the position resolution of scintillator.

no journal, ,

Scintillation converter is one of important devices, which determine the spatial resolution in NRG using camera system. We prepared 10B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ type with different thickness and evaluated the characteristics including spatial resolution. Those scintillators were tested using cooled type CCD camera system at thermal neutron radiography facility (TNRF) in JRR-3. Spatial resolution of those scintillators was evaluated as "half value" by the edge spread function method using knife-edged Gd plate with 0.1mm in thickness. The results show that the spatial resolution of the10B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ type scintillators is improved with thinning the scintillation layer and is not so different from that of LiF type ones. On the other hand, luminescence intensity of the 10B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ type scintillators is decreased with thinning the scintillation layer due to the reduction of efficiency of neutron capture and lower than that of LiF type ones.
