Development of divertor IR thermography for ITER

Divertor IR Thermography is one of the diagnostics which Japan is in charge of development in ITER project. The conceptual design has been performed so far, and the progress is reported here. By reducing the size of mirrors, and making the optical path a labyrinthine structure, the design of a new optics that fills requirements of both spatial resolution and neutron shielding has been advanced. To achieve the required measurement accuracy, the detected signal and the noises such as bremsstrahlung light, detector noise and thermal noise of optical components were evaluated. Higher photons than the bremsstrahlung light are obtained, excluding the low temperature range. The simulation calculation of reflection from wall was started. Detailed method of data processing of deriving the profiles of surface temperature in the divertor plates from the observed signals and in-situ calibration strategies of the optical system are important issues and will be discussed.

The soft X-ray beamline BL23SU at SPring-8 has undergone an upgrade with a twin-helical undulator of in-vacuum type to enhance the experimental capabilities of the end stations. The new light source with a fast helicity-switching operation allows not only the data throughput but also the sensitivity in X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) to be improved. The operational performance and potential are described by presenting XMCD results of paramagnetic $$beta$$-US$$_{2}$$ measured with a 10 T superconducting magnet.

Japan Research Reactor No.3 (JRR-3) has been providing Neutron Transmutation Doping Silicon (NTD-Si). Though the inverse method is employed for producing NTD-Si in JRR-3, it is possible to increase the production rate of NTD-Si by using the neutron filter method. As the result, the prospect that the neutron filter method was able to develop without changing a geometrical size of NTD-Si facility in JRR3 was obtained.

Present status of JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator

In FY2006, a tandem accelerator was operated for 201days. The maximum voltage was 18 MV and the accelerated ion species was 19 elements (26 nuclides). As the trouble case which occurred previous year, the change of the beam shape occurred often in the injection beam line of the tandem accelerator. The cause was the contact failure of the pole connector of the electrostatics quadrupole lens. Generally, it was difficult to confirm the connection status of the opened pole but we specified a connection abnormal part by the capacitive coupling method. This technique is useful technology which can be applied to the other electrostatics optics elements. Because the charging electric current flowed only about usual about 60% and the terminal voltage became unstable, we opened a tank and checked the charging system. As a result, a problem was confirmed to the damaging of resistance and the installation of the cable. In the seminar, the operation, maintenance and the accelerator development of the tandem accelerator in FY2006 are described.

We measured the orbit fluctuation caused by APPLE-2 type undulator (ID23) installed in the SPring-8 storage ring by using the developed real time measurement system of electron and photon beam position monitors. We quantitatively found two characteristic fluctuations correlating with the ID23 motion by wavelet transform which is a kind of frequency analysis. One originates from the variation of error field during the ID drive. The other originates from the stray magnetic field leaked from the servomotors for the phase drive. Using these results, we tried to get rid of the effect of error fields on the beam orbit by the precise feed-forward correction table and the stray field shield. Consequently we succeeded in suppressing the orbit fluctuation down to sub-micron during the gap drive, which is observed by photon beam position monitors installed in downstream 20m from each light source point.

We observed two characteristic electron orbit fluctuations caused when the phase of ID23 (APPLE-2 type undulator) installed at SPring-8 was driven. One was caused by the variation of magnetic error filed of ID23 when the phase was driven. The other was caused by the noise from the phase drive system which adoped AC servomotors. We measured these orbit fluctuations synchronized with the phase motion using the real-time electron beam position measurement system. The part of the orbit fluctuation was supressed by the correction table which was made referring to the obtained data.

We have developed a new method to extract only the orbit fluctuation caused by changing magnetic field error of an insertion device (ID). This method consists of two main parts. (i) The orbit fluctuation is measured with modulating the error field of the ID by using the real-time beam position measuring system. (ii) The orbit fluctuation depending on the variation of the error field of the ID is extracted by the filter applying the Wavelet Transform. We call this approach the amplitude modulation method. This analysis technique was applied to measure the orbit fluctuation caused by the error field of APPLE-2 type undulator (ID23) installed in the SPring-8 storage ring. We quantitatively measured two kinds of the orbit fluctuation which are the static term caused by the magnetic field error and the dynamic term caused by the eddy current on the ID23 chamber.

Structure investigation on layered cathode materials of lithium-ion battery

The layered rock-salt structural materials, LiMO$$_{2}$$ (M=Ni, Co, etc.) are promising candidates as cathodes in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These materials are defective in their electrochemical properties because their structures and thermal propertiesare unstable during the lithium (de)intercalation process. However, the substituted Li(Ni,Co,Al)O$$_{2}$$ system shows the good electrochemical and thermal properties. The Mg doped system, Li(M,Mg)O$$_{2}$$, also shows good cycle stabilities. In this study, the effect of Mg doping into the Li(Ni,Co,Al,Mg)O$$_{2}$$ system was studied with Mg compositions between 0 $$<$$ Mg $$<$$ 0.1. In this presentation, the detailed structure will be discussed.
