Analysis of the electric double layer structure formed in an ionic liquid using neutron reflectivity

Tamura, Kazuhisa; Akutsu-Suyama, Kazuhiro*; Cagnes, M.*; Darwish, T. A.*

ECS Advances (Internet), 1(2), p.020503_1 - 020503_5, 2022/06

The ionic liquid/Si electrode interface was investigated using neutron reflectivity. We precisely elucidated the structure of the electrical double layer formed at 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([BMIM]TFSA)/Si(100) electrode interface with the orientation of the [BMIM]TFSA molecule using a partially deuterated [BMIM]TFSA. The results revealed that [BMIM]TFSA molecules form a layered structure. Cation and anion molecules are alternatingly stacked and molecules in the first three layers are horizontally oriented to the electrode surface at E = -1.2 V, i.e., on the negatively charged electrode surface. It was also revealed that the imidazole ring in [BMIM] cation is parallel to the electrode surface.

We evaluated the structural change of the cathode material Li$$_{2}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ that was deposited as an epitaxial film with an (001) orientation in an all-solid-state battery. In case of the electrode with LiPO$$_{4}$$ coating. Experiments revealed a structural change to a high-capacity (activated) phase that proceeded gradually and continuously with cycling. The activated phase barely showed any capacity fading. We propose a mechanism of structural change with cycling: charging to a high voltage at a sufficiently low Li concentration typically induces irreversible transition to a phase detrimental to cycling that could, but not necessarily, be accompanied by the dissolution of Mn and/or the release of O into the electrolyte, while a gradual irreversible transition to an activated phase happens at a similar Li concentration under a lower voltage.

We combined the deuterium labeling and neutron reflectivity techniques to determine the fine structure of the electric double layer structure in an imidazolium ionic liquid (IL). For this, a simple and large scale deuteration method for imidazolium ILs was developed, where the deuteration level can be systematically controlled.

The Oginosawa River catchment lies 15 km south-west of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. The General-purpose Terrestrial Fluid-flow Simulator (GETFLOWS) code was used to study sediment and $$^{137}$$Cs redistribution within the catchment. Cesium-137 input to watercourses came predominantly from land adjacent to river channels and forest gullies. Forested areas far from the channels only made a minor contribution to $$^{137}$$Cs input to watercourses, total erosion of between 0.001-0.1 mm from May 2011 to December 2015. The 2.3-6.9% y$$^{-1}$$ decrease in the amount of $$^{137}$$Cs in forest topsoil over the study period can be explained by radioactive decay (approximately 2.3% y$$^{-1}$$), along with a migration downwards into subsoil and a small amount of export. The amount of $$^{137}$$Cs available for release from land adjacent to rivers is expected to be lower in future than compared to this study period, as the simulations indicate a high depletion of inventory from these areas.

This paper describes watershed modeling of catchments surrounding the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant to understand radio-cesium redistribution by water flows and sediment transport. We extended our previously developed three-dimensional hydrogeological model of the catchments to calculate the migration of radio-cesium in both sediment-sorbed and dissolved forms. The simulations cover the entirety of 2013, including nine heavy rainfall events, as well as Typhoon Roke in September 2011. Typhoons Man-yi and Wipha were the strongest typhoons in 2013 and had the largest bearing on radio-cesium redistribution. The simulated $$^{137}$$Cs discharge quantities over the nine events in 2013 are in good agreement with field monitoring observations. Deposition mainly occurs on flood plains and points where the river beds broaden in the lower basins, and within dam reservoirs along the rivers. Differences in $$^{137}$$Cs discharge ratios between the five basins are explained by differences in the initial fallout distribution within the basins, the presence of dam reservoirs, and the input supply to watercourses. It is possible to use these simulation results to evaluate future radioactive material distributions in order to support remediation planning.

The laboratory building No.1 for the plutonium research program (Bldg. Pu1) was chosen as one of the facilities to decommission by Japan Atomic Energy Agency Reform in September, 2013. The research groups, users of Bldg. Pu1, were driven by necessity to remove used equipment and transport nuclear fuel to other facilities from Bldg. Pu1. Research Group for Radiochemistry proactively established the Used Equipment Removal Team for the smooth operation of the removal in April, 2015. The team classified six types of work into the nature of the operation, removal of used equipment, disposal of chemicals, stabilization of mercury, stabilization of nuclear fuel, transportation of nuclear fuel and radioisotope, and survey of contamination status inside the glove boxes. These works were completed in December, 2015. This report circumstantially shows six works process, with the exception of the approval of the changes on the usage of nuclear fuel in Bldg. Pu1 to help prospective decommission.

Sediment erosion and transport processes that are considered to be important in predicting the future radioactive material distribution through sediment-sorbed form in Fukushima Prefecture are simulated. Since large portion of the sediment is considered to be supplied into the rivers, it is important to trace their migration process in terms of each river basin. We choose five river basins, namely the Odaka, the Ukedo, the Maeda, the Kuma, and the Tomioka, from north to south, because of their importance in contamination aspects and prediction studies. The results are summarized as comprehensive dataset of sediment migration for particular river basins in typical typhoon events that account for the most of annual soil erosion. Detail calculations implemented for the amount of sediment supplied in to the river, deposited on river and dam beds, and exported to the ocean.

High intensity laser-plasma interaction has attracted considerable interest for a number of years. The laser-plasma interaction is accompanied by generation of various charged particle beams. Results of simultaneous novel measurements of electron-induced photonuclear neutrons (photoneutron), which are a diagnostic of the laser-plasma interaction, are proposed to use for optimization of the laser-plasma ion generation. The proposed method is demonstrated by the laser irradiation with the intensity os 1$$times$$10$$^{21}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$ on the metal foil target. The photoneutrons are measured by using NE213 liquid scintillation detectors. Heavy-ion signal is registered with the CR39 track detector simultaneously. The measured signals of the electron-induced photoneutrons are well reproduced by using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). The results obtained provide useful approach for analyzing the various laser based ion beams.

Surface structural changes of a hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC) film exposed to a hyperthermal atomic oxygen beam were investigated by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-PES), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). It was confirmed that the DLC surface was oxidized and etched by high-energy collisions of atomic oxygen. RBS and real-time mass-loss data showed a linear relationship between etching and atomic oxygen fluence. SR-PES data suggested that the oxide layer was restricted to the topmost surface of the DLC film. NEXAFS data were interpreted to mean that the sp$$^{2}$$ structure at the DLC surface was selectively etched by collisions with hyperthermal atomic oxygen, and an sp$$^{3}$$-rich region remained at the topmost DLC surface. The formation of an sp$$^{3}$$-rich layer at the DLC surface led to surface roughening and a reduced erosion yield relative to the pristine DLC surface.

We constructed MeV- and sub-MeV-photon sources by means of Compton backscattering with a laser light and an electron beam at SPring-8 and KPSI-JAEA. MeV-photon source consists of a continuous-wave optically-pumped far infrared laser and an 8-GeV stored electron beam. Sub-MeV-photon source consists of a Nd:YAG pulse-laser and an 150-MeV electron beam accelerated by a microtron. Both source have been succeeded backscattered photon generation. In this talk, I will present characteristics and future prospects of these photon sources.

A test experimental line at SPring-8 has been constructed for the generation of backward Compton scattered (BCS) $$gamma$$-ray by head-on collision between an 8 GeV electron beam and a far-infrared (FIR) laser. For the FIR laser, we use a continuous-wave methanol laser optically pumped by a carbon dioxide ($${rm CO}_{2}$$) laser. The FIR laser output power achieved is 1.6 W at maximum for 118.8 $$mu$$m lasing; this value is the highest in the case of this type of laser. As a result of the direct measurement, the generated BCS $$gamma$$-ray flux was found to be about $$10^{3}$$ photons/s. This value is consistent with the estimation calculated by taking into account the input laser power and the transmittance of the laser transport system.

Evaluation of radioactive inventory for Fugen's decommissioning

Kitamura, Koichi; Hayashi, Hirokazu; Morishita, Yoshitsugu; Tanji, Kazuhiro*

Hoshasen, 34(1), p.53 - 63, 2008/01

It is very important to evaluate radioactive inventory and an amount of radioactive waste accurately for both the planning and the safety assessment on Fugen's decommissioning. Fugen had carried out various radioactive inventory investigations, activation evaluations by materials sampling, neutron measurements, contamination evaluation by investigation of radiation control records, etc. since operation period because Fugen uses heavy water as moderator and its core structure is different from that of LWR. And then, radioactive inventory was evaluated using those investigation data. Moreover, an amount of radioactive waste was estimated by the classification for the radioactive waste disposal based on the evaluated radioactive inventory results. This paper is intended to introduce the evaluation methods and results of the radioactive inventory and estimation of an amount of radioactive waste for Fugen.

Monju safety margin analysis based on measurements

Nishida, Kazuhiro; Kitamura, Kenji*; Yamada, Fumiaki

Saikuru Kiko Giho, (10), p.5 - 13, 2001/03

The results of the function test and the startup test of the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor Monju were examined for the hypothetical analysis of the rapid withdrawal of the control rod assembly and to analyze pump seizure in the Primary Heat Transport System, in order to obtain accurate transition of the plant dynamics. These analyses confirmed that both of the accidents settle down without affecting the plant structure. During the withdrawal accident, reactor power reached 106%. During the pump seizure accident, the fuel cladding mid-wall temperature reached 702$$^{circ}$$C. Both of these values are sufficiently below the safety margins for anomaly transients and accidents during operation and former analyses for design safety permission. The differences between these results and the former analyses for design safety permission have mostly been attributed to the characteristics of the control rods.

JNC-TN8400-99-083.pdf:5.36MB

Studies on the chemical and migration behaviour of radionuclides were carried out in the Quantitative Assessment Radionuclide Migration Experimental Facility (QUALITY)for assuring the relaiability and for improving the propriety of data concerning nuclide migration used in the Second Progress Report for the geoloical disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Five studies for solubility, sorption and diffusion concerning nuclide migration were carried out. The overview of each study and the result is as follows: (1)Study on Effect of Carbonate on Np Solubility. Solubilities of Np(IV) were measured as functions of pH and carbonate concentration under reducing conditions. The obtained data could be well described by considering two hydroxo-carbonate complexes, and those stability constants were estimated and compared with the literature data. Consequently, the data obtained in this study were similar to the literature data. (2)Study on Effect of Carbonate on Np Sorption on Bentonite. Distribution coefficients (Kd) of Np(IV) on smectite were measured as a function of carbonate concentration. The obtained Kd values were approximately constant over the carbonate concentration (total carbon concentration 0.04-0.15M). The results of desorption tests by 1M KCl and HCl at the end of sorption experiments showed two different desorption behaviour; Np(IV) was well removed by HCl for the experiments in low carbonate concentration and by KCl for those in high carbonate concentration. (3)Distribution Coefficient Measurements for Cs, Pb and Cm on Rocks. Distribution Coefficients for Cs, Pb and Cm on Japanese major rocks (basalt, mudstone, sandstone, granodiorite and tuff) were measured as a function of ionic strength. The obtained Kd values were either the same orders or higher compared with data used to both fresh and saline groundwater systems in the Second Progress Report. This indicates that the Kd data used in the Second Progress Report are either proper or conservative. ...
