Band gap formation in graphene by hybridization with Hex-Au(001) reconstructed surface

As Au (001) surfaces exhibit a quasi-one-dimensional corrugated structure, Hex-Au(001), its periodicity was predicted to change the electronic structure of graphene when graphene was grown on this surface. Furthermore, the hybridization between graphene and Au is known to introduce bandgap and spin polarization into graphene. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation of graphene on a Hex-Au(001) surface. A bandgap of 0.2 eV in the graphene Dirac cone was observed at the crossing point of the graphene Dirac cone and Au 6sp bands, indicating that the origin of the bandgap formation was the hybridization between the graphene Dirac cone and Au 6sp band. We discussed the hybridization mechanism and anticipated spin injection into the graphene Dirac cone.

Band gap opening in graphene by hybridization with Au (001) reconstructed surfaces

Au(001) surfaces exhibit a complex reconstructed structure [Hex-Au(001)] comprising a hexagonal surface and square bulk lattices, yielding a quasi-one-dimensional corrugated surface. When graphene was grown on this surface, the periodicity of the corrugated surface was predicted to change the electronic structure of graphene, forming bandgaps and new Dirac points. Furthermore, the graphene-Au interface is promising for bandgap generation and spin injection due to band hybridization. Here, we report the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculation of graphene on a Hex-Au(001) surface. The crossing point of the original and replica graphene $$pi$$ bands showed no bandgap, suggesting that the one-dimensional potential was too small to modify the electronic structure. A bandgap of 0.2 eV was observed at the crossing point of the graphene $$pi$$ and Au $$6sp$$ bands, indicating that the bandgap is generated using hybridization of the graphene $$pi$$ and Au $$6sp$$ bands. We discussed the hybridization mechanism and concluded that the R30 configuration between graphene and Au and an isolated electronic structure of Au are essential for effective hybridization between graphene and Au. We anticipate that hybridization between graphene $$pi$$ and Au $$6sp$$ would result in spin injection into graphene.

An electrochemical membrane Bunsen reaction using a cation exchange membrane (CEM) is a key to achieving an iodine-sulfur (IS) thermochemical water splitting process for mass-production of hydrogen. In this study, we prepared both the radiation-grafted CEM with a high ion exchange capacity (IEC) and the highly-porous Au-electroplated anode, and then used them for the membrane Bunsen reaction to reduce the cell overvoltage. The high-IEC grafted CEM exhibited low resistivity for proton transport, while the porous Au anode had a large effective surface area for anodic SO$$_{2}$$ oxidation reaction. As a result, the cell overvoltage for the membrane Bunsen reaction was significantly reduced to 0.21 V at 200 mA/cm$$^{2}$$, which was only one-third of that of the previous test using the commercial CEM and non-porous anode. From the analysis of the current-voltage characteristics, employment of the grafted CEM was found to be more effective for the overvoltage reduction compared to the porous Au anode.

Thermochemical hydrogen production by the iodine-sulfur process decomposes water into hydrogen and oxygen by combining the chemical reactions of iodine and sulfur. Two types of acids are produced through the Bunsen reaction. To improve the performance of this reaction, ion-exchange membranes for the membrane Bunsen reaction should be developed. In the present study, a cation-exchange membrane was prepared by using a radiation-graft polymerization method. It was found that a divinylbenzene crosslinking procedure was very effective in reducing water permeation through the membrane, and the membrane Bunsen reaction was successfully carried out by using the developed crosslinked membrane. Therefore, the developed crosslinked membrane is a potential candidate for cation-exchange membranes for the membrane Bunsen reaction.

Effect of electron correlations on spin excitation bandwidth in Ba$$_{0.75}$$K$$_{0.25}$$Fe$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$ as seen via time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to investigate the effect of electron correlations on spin dynamics in iron-based superconductor Ba$$_{0.75}$$K$$_{0.25}$$Fe$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$. Our INS data show a spin-wave-like dispersive feature, with a zone boundary energy of 200 meV. A first principles analysis of dynamical spin susceptibility, incorporating the mass renormalization factor of 3, as determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, provides a reasonable description of the observed spin excitations. This analysis shows that electron correlations in the Fe-3d bands yield enhanced effective electron masses, and consequently, induce substantial narrowing of the spin excitation bandwidth. Our results highlight the importance of electron correlations in an itinerant description of the spin excitations in iron-based superconductors.

A basic study towards enhanced safety management of irradiated fuels and materials from a severe accident is underway utilizing JAEA's hot laboratory complex in Oarai. The present study that consists of three basic research programs is aimed at contributing to building enhanced safety management measures (including radioactive decontamination, evaluation measurements, safekeeping, treatment and disposal) of irradiated fuels and materials from the severe accident. In this paper, not only the overview of activities of individual research programs but also the several preliminary results were shown together with future plans.

Chemical composition of artificial seawater after leaching tests of irradiated fuel

In the accident of Fukushima Daiichi NPPs, the water ingress was performed in order to decrease the reactor temperature. At that time, sea water was temporarily used as a coolant and the water contacted with nuclear fuel directly. It can be supposed that fission products (FP) were easily migrated from the fuel to sea water in this situation and that affect the water quality. The knowledge of leaching behavior, therefore, is necessary for evaluating the integrity of reactor component materials such as steels for pressure containment vessel and for reactor vessel. In order to obtain the fundamental knowledge for leaching behavior of FP in the hot sea water, the leaching tests of irradiated fuel were performed and the leachates were subjected to chemical analysis. It is found that he leaching rate of each nuclides obtained in this study were similar to that of the leaching results simulating the underground water.

Investigation of the cause of peculiar irradiation behavior of 9Cr-ODS steel in BOR-60 irradiation tests

Four experimental fuel assemblies (EFAs) containing 9Cr-ODS steel cladding fuel pins were previously irradiated in the BOR-60. One of the EFAs achieved the best data, a peak burn-up of 11.9at% and a neutron dose of 51 dpa, without any microstructure instability or any fuel pin rupture. On the other hand, in another EFA (peak burn-up, 10.5at%; peak neutron dose, 44 dpa), peculiar irradiation behaviors such as microstructure instability and fuel pin rupture occurred. The combined effects of matrix Cr heterogeneity (presence of metallic Cr inclusions) and high-temperature irradiation were concluded to be the main cause of the peculiar microstructure change of 9Cr-ODS steel cladding tubes in the BOR-60 irradiation tests. They contributed to the fuel pin rupture.

The oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic steel claddings developed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency were irradiated in Joyo and BOR-60 in order to confirm their irradiation performance and thus judge their applicability to high burnup and high temperature fast reactor fuels. In Joyo, material irradiation tests up to 33 dpa were carried out at in the temperature range of 693 - 1108 K. The irradiation data were obtained concerning mainly mechanical properties and of microstructure stability. In BOR-60, fuel pin irradiation tests were conducted up to burnup of 11.9 at% and neutron dose of 51 dpa. The irradiation data were obtained concerning fuel-cladding chemical interaction, dimensional stability under irradiation and so on. These results showed the superior irradiation performance of the ODS ferritic steel claddings and their application possibility as fast reactor fuels. This paper describes the evaluation of the obtained irradiation data of ODS ferritic steel claddings.

We have developed a new Si/CdTe semiconductor double-sided strip detector (DSD) Compton camera. The camera consists of a 500-$$mu$$m-thick Si-DSD and four layers of 750-$$mu$$m-thick CdTe-DSDs all of which have common electrode configuration segmented into 128 strips on each side with pitches of 250$$mu$$m. In order to realize high angular resolution and to reduce size of the detector system, a stack of DSDs with short stack pitches of 4 mm is utilized to make the camera. Taking advantage of the excellent energy and position resolutions of the semiconductor devices, the camera achieves high angular resolutions of 4.5 degrees at 356 keV and 3.5 degrees at 662 keV. To obtain such high resolutions together with an acceptable detection efficiency, we demonstrate data reduction methods including energy calibration using Compton scattering continuum and depth sensing in the CdTe-DSD. We also discuss imaging capability of the camera and show simultaneous multi-energy imaging.

By using new Compton camera consisting of silicon double-sided strip detector (Si-DSD) and CdTe-DSD developed for the ASTRO-H mission, an experiment was conducted to study its feasibility for advanced hotspot monitoring. In addition to hotspot imaging already provided by commercial imaging systems, the identification of the variety of radioisotopes is realized thanks to the good energy resolution given by the semiconductor detectors. Three radioisotopes of $$^{133}$$Ba (356 keV), $$^{22}$$Na (511 keV) and $$^{137}$$Cs (662 keV) were individually imaged by applying event selection in the energy window and the $$gamma$$-ray images was correctly overlapped by an optical picture. The detection efficiency of 1.68$$times$$10$$^{-4}$$ (effective area: 1.7$$times$$10$$^{-4}$$ cm$$^2$$) and angular resolution of 3.8$$^{circ}$$ were obtained by stacking five detector modules for 662 keV $$gamma$$-ray. The higher detection efficiency required in a specific use can be achieved by stacking more detector modules.

Effects of neutron irradiation on tensile properties of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel claddings

The effects of fast neutron irradiation on ring tensile properties of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel claddings for fast reactor were investigated. Specimens were irradiated in the experimental fast reactor Joyo using the material irradiation rig at temperatures between 693 and 1108 K to fast neutron doses ranging from 16 to 33 dpa. The post-irradiation ring tensile tests were carried out at irradiation temperatures. The experimental results showed that there was no significant change in tensile strengths after neutron irradiation below 923 K, but the tensile strengths at neutron irradiation above 1023 K up to 33 dpa were decreased by about 20%. On the other hand, uniform elongation after irradiation was more than 2% at all irradiation conditions. The ring tensile properties of these ODS claddings remained excellent within these irradiation conditions compared with conventional 11Cr ferritic/martensitic steel (PNC-FMS) claddings.

This paper describes evaluation results of in-reactor integrity of 9Cr and 12Cr-ODS steel cladding tubes and the plan for reliability improvement in homogeneous tube production. A fuel assembly in the BOR-60 irradiation test including 9Cr and 12Cr-ODS fuel pins has achieved the highest burn-up, i.e. peak burn-up of 11.9at% and peak neutron dose of 51dpa, without any fuel pin rupture and microstructure instability. In another fuel assembly containing 9Cr and 12Cr-ODS steel fuel pins whose peak burn-up was 10.5at%, one 9Cr-ODS steel fuel pin failed near the upper end of the fuel column. A peculiar microstructure change occurred in the vicinity of the ruptured area. The primary cause of this fuel pin rupture and microstructure change was shown to be the presence of metallic Cr inclusions in the 9Cr-ODS steel tube, which had passed an ultrasonic inspection test for defects. In the next stage from 2011 to 2013, the fabrication technology of full pre-alloy 9Cr-ODS steel cladding tube will be developed.
