Masses of $$^{246}$$Es, $$^{251}$$Fm and the transfermium nuclei $$^{249-252}$$Md, and $$^{254}$$No, produced by hot- and cold-fusion reactions, in the vicinity of the deformed $$N=152$$ neutron shell closure, have been directly measured using a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph. The masses of $$^{246}$$Es and $$^{249,250,252}$$Md were measured for the first time. Using the masses of $$^{249,250}$$Md as anchor points for $$alpha$$ decay chains, the masses of heavier nuclei, up to $$^{261}$$Bh and $$^{266}$$Mt, were determined. These new masses were compared with theoretical global mass models and demonstrated to be in good agreement with macroscopic-microscopic models in this region. The empirical shell gap parameter $$delta_{2n}$$ derived from three isotopic masses was updated with the new masses and corroborate the existence of the deformed $$N=152$$ neutron shell closure for Md and Lr.

Tanaka, Shigeru; Abe, Yuichi; Kawabe, Masaru; Kutsukake, Chuzo; Oginuma, Yoshikazu; Yamada, Masayuki; Suzuki, Takumi; Yamanishi, Toshihiko; Konno, Chikara

Journal of Plasma and Fusion Research SERIES, Vol.9, p.338 - 341, 2010/08

We have conducted a small tritium target production R&D for FNS inside JAEA. The tritium target is produced by adsorbing tritium in a thin titanium layer. Since titanium is very active to oxygen, glow discharge cleaning was carried out to remove an oxidation film of the titanium surface. Through many tests with deuterium, we found out that it was not an oxidation film but humidity to disturb tritium absorption. The following procedures were necessary; (1) to outgas the inside of an absorption chamber, (2) to keep environmental humidity under 3% in handling the titanium-deposited substrate, (3) to keep the titanium-deposited target substrate in the vacuum. The DT neutron generation performance of the tritium target produced with the above procedures was the same as that with discharge cleaning. The manufacture condition of the small target was established.

Analysis of sludge in the dissolver and survey of the behavior of zirconium molybdate

Kondo, Yoshikazu; Uchida, Naoki; Terunuma, Hirotaka; Tanaka, Kosuke; Oyama, Koichi; Katsurai, Kiyomichi; Washiya, Tadahiro

Proceedings of International Conference on Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle; Sustainable Options & Industrial Perspectives (Global 2009) (CD-ROM), p.277 - 280, 2009/09

The composition of sludge in the dissolver after dissolution of PWR and ATR fuels at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP) was analyzed. As a result the presence of zirconium molybdate was confirmed by the analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD). To clarify the formation behavior of the precipitates of zirconium molybdate, investigated the dependence of HNO$$_{3}$$ concentration on the precipitation with Mo and Zr solution. To evaluate the adhesion on the metal surface (stainless steel and Ti metal), the deposition amounts of the precipitates of zirconium molybdate on the metal were also examined. In addition, it reports on the comparative result of executing a chemical dissolution of the precipitates by using the solutions of NaOH, C$$_{2}$$H$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$-HNO$$_{3}$$ and H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$-HNO$$_{3}$$.

The excitation function of the $$^8$$Li(d,t)$$^7$$Li reaction was directly measured using $$^8$$Li beams at E$$_{mathrm{cm}}$$ = 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, 0.8, 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 MeV with CD$$_2$$ targets. The beam energies covered the Gamow peaks for 1$$sim$$3$$times$$10$$^9$$ K. Large cross sections were observed at around E$$_{mathrm{cm}}$$ = 0.8 MeV, implying a resonance state located at 22.4 MeV in $$^{10}$$Be. The present astrophysical reaction rate is higher in one order magnitude than the presently adopted rate at around 1$$times$$10$$^9$$ K.

KEKCB is an 18 GHz Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source and is a charge breeder device for converting mass-separated 1$$^+$$ radioactive ions to multi-ionized ones by utilizing an axial injection technique to the ECR plasma. It is a part of the Tokai Radioactive Ion Accelerator Complex (TRIAC) facility. Based on the developments so far, converting efficiencies for metal elements, such as barium and indium, and for gaseous elements, such as krypton and xenon, are improved to be 7 $$%$$ and 2 $$%$$, respectively. And it is confirmed that the efficiency is nearly the constant for short-lived (t$$_{1/2}$$ $$ge$$ 1 sec) isotopes. Background ions mixed in the output beams are supressed to be 600 pps from 10$$^8$$ pps by applying all aluminum electrodes and high pressure pure-water cleanings.

Cr-CrCr-based spinel compounds ACr$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ (A=Mg, Zn, Cd, and Hg) are so far the best model systems for a network of corner-sharing tetrahedrons with isotropic nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. The systems exhibit novel spin-Peierls phase transitions from cubic spin liquid to non-cubic N$'e$el states at low temperatures. Recent bulk magnetization studies on CdCr$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ and HgCr$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ revealed the magnetic field-induced half magnetization plateau states that are stable over a wide range of field. Neutronics experiments have been performed for the solid breeder blanket using a DT neutron source at the FNS facility in JAEA. We have applied the blanket mockup composed of two enriched Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$ and three beryllium layers, and measured the detailed spatial distribution of the tritium production rate (TPR) using enriched Li$$_{2}$$CO$$_{3}$$ pellets. TPRs in the pellets have been measured by a liquid scintillation counter. Experiments have been done under a condition with a neutron reflector surrounding the DT neutron source. Numerical simulations have been performed using the MCNP-4C with the FENDL-2.0 and JENDL-3.3. The ranges of ratios of calculation results to experimental ones (C/Es) are 0.97-1.17 concerning with local TPR, and 1.04-1.09 for the integrated tritium production. It is found that the total integrated tritium production, which corresponds to tritium breeding ratio, can be predicted within uncertainty of 10% using the Monte Carlo calculation code and latest nuclear data libraries.

The excitation function of the $$^{8}$$Li($$alpha$$,n)$$^{11}$$B reaction was measured while identifying the final state event by event in the region of E$$_{rm{cm}}$$ = 0.7 - 2.6 MeV using a highly efficient detector system and a low-energy $$^8$$Li beam. The results are much improved both in statistics and precisions, and show smaller cross sections than those of previous measurements by a factor of more than 2 in the low-energy region of E$$_{rm{cm}}le$$ 1.5 MeV. A resonance-like structure is found at around E$$_{rm{cm}}$$ = 0.85 MeV.

Thanks to the nature of inverse transfer-reactions, low-energy radioactive nuclear beams in light neutron-rich region were produced. The mass-separation and velocity-separation of the JAERI recoil mass-separator help to form high purity beams. The beams of $$^8$$Li, $$^{12}$$B, and $$^{16}$$N-RNBs are utilized to the experiments, so far, with those beam intensities and purities of 1.4$$times$$10$$^4$$ pps and 99$$%$$, 7.8$$times$$10$$^3$$ pps and 98$$%$$, and 4.7$$times$$10$$^3$$ pps and 98.5$$%$$, respectively.

Direct evidence of the spatial ordering of Dy 4$$f$$ quadrupole and hexadecapole moments in DyB$$_2$$C$$_2$$ is demonstrated by resonant X-ray diffraction enhanced by an electric quadrupole event ($$E$$2 resonance) at the Dy L$$_{III}$$ absorption edge. The diffraction data show that the structural phase transition at $$T$$$$_{Q}$$ = 24.7 K is accompanied by a reduction in the symmetry of the Dy site to 2/$$m$$, from 4/$$m$$, and the spatial ordering of the time-even Dy multipoles with A$$_{g}$$ character. Below $$T$$$$_{Q}$$ the crystal structure is described by the space group $$P$$4$$_2$$/$$mnm$$ and Dy ions occupy sites (4$$c$$). The distortion at T$$_{Q}$$ involves the lattice occupied by B and C ions, and it amounts to a buckling of B-C planes that are normal to the two-fold rotation axis of 2/$$m$$. An immediately plausible model of low-energy Dy states correlates data on the specific heat, our X-ray diffraction signals, and magnetic ordering below 15.3 K which has been observed in magnetic neutron diffraction.
