Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-Pt nanoparticles (NPs) hybrid nanowires were fabricated by high energy ion beam irradiation to PVP thin films including H$$_{2}$$PtCl$$_{6}$$. Single ion hitting caused crosslinking reactions of PVP and reduction of Pt ions within local cylindrical area along an ion trajectory (ion track); therefore, the PVP nanowires including Pt NPs were formed and isolated on Si substrate after wet-development procedure. The number of Pt NPs was easily controlled by the mixed ratio of PVP and H$$_{2}$$PtCl$$_{6}$$. However, increasing the amount of H$$_{2}$$PtCl$$_{6}$$ led to decreasing the radial size and separation of the hybrid nanowires during the wet-development. Additional electron beam irradiation after ion beam improved separation of the nanowires and controlled radial sizes due to an increase in the density of crosslinking points inner the nanowires.

Protein nanowires exhibiting specific biological activities hold promise for interacting with living cells and controlling and predicting biological responses such as apoptosis, endocytosis and cell adhesion. Here we report the result of the interaction of a single high-energy charged particle with protein molecules. Degradation of the human serum albumin nanowires was examined using trypsin. The biotinylated human serum albumin nanowires bound avidin, demonstrating the high affinity of the nanowires. Human serum albumin-avidin hybrid nanowires were also fabricated from a solid state mixture and exhibited good mechanical strength. The biotinylated human serum albumin nanowires can be transformed into nanowires exhibiting a biological function such as avidin-biotinyl interactions and peroxidase activity. The present technique is a versatile platform for functionalizing the surface of any protein molecule with an extremely large surface area.

The development of organic semiconducting nanowires that act as charge carrier transport pathways in flexible and lightweight nano-electronics is a major scientific challenge. We report on the fabrication of fullerene nanowires that is universally applicable to its derivatives (pristine C$$_{60}$$, methanofullerenes of C$$_{61}$$ and C$$_{71}$$, and indene C$$_{60}$$ bis-adduct). Nanowires with radii of 8$$sim$$11 nm were formed via a chain polymerization reaction induced by a high-energy ion beam. Fabrication of a poly(3-hexylthiophene): [6,6]-phenyl C$$_{61}$$ butyric acid methyl ester (PC$$_{61}$$BM) bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cell including PC$$_{61}$$BM nanowires with precisely-controlled length and density demonstrates how application of this methodology can improve the power conversion efficiency of these inverted cells.

The nanowires based on polystyrene (PS) and polycarbosilane (PCS) were formed by 450 MeV Xe beam irradiation to their thin films. The nanowires, which formed by crosslinking reaction along the single ion path, can isolated by development procedures. This technique is sometimes called as single particle nanofabrication technique (SPNT). In this paper, tow step irradiation of ion beam and ray was carried out in order to control their radial sizes. The radial sizes of nanowires, based on PS and PCS were increased with the dose of ray. The change of radial sizes, which depended on the dose, was quantitatively measured, and we discussed in terms of radiation induced gel formation.

Synthesis of ceramic nano fiber from precursor polymers by ion beam irradiation

Sugimoto, Masaki; Yoshikawa, Masahito; Tsukuda, Satoshi*; Seki, Shu*

Transactions of the Materials Research Society of Japan, 33(4), p.1027 - 1030, 2008/12

We have succeeded in synthesizing the silicon carbide (SiC) nano fibers from Si-based polymers using MeV-order heavy-ion beam irradiation technique. Si-based polymers were cross-linked along ion tracks of nano-size in diameter through the whole thickness of the polymer thin film. nano fibers were developed on the surface of the substrate by dissolution and washing away of un-crosslinked polymer by solvent. Subsequent pyrolysis converted polymeric into inorganic SiC nano fibers. The diameter of nano fibers was depended on LET (liner energy transfer), molecular weight and cross-linking efficiency of the precursor polymers.

Nano-wire formation in Si-based polymer thin films using a heavy ion beam is discussed in terms of energy density deposition along ion tracks. Gelation of the polymer along the ion track results in cross-linking to produce nano-wires with size and number density controllable by selecting appropriate ion beam characteristics and polymer materials. Ion bombardment of polycarbosilane (PCS), PCS-polyvinylsilane blend polymer, and polymethylphenylsilane produces nano-wires with radii of 30 nm depending on the type of ion beam. The difference in size is shown to be related to the efficiency of the cross-linking reaction considering the deposited energy distribution along the ion tracks.

It is already found that magnetic transition temperature of Fe-50at.%Rh changes by high-energy ion irradiation. This irradiation-induced changes in magnetic properties has been investigated by magnetic force microscopy. It has been found that microscopic magnetic structure appears after ion-irradiation, and the structure changes depending on the ion-fluence. The observed structure was not the same as that observed for Fe-rich ferromagnetic Fe-45at.%Rh alloys.

Radius control of ceramic nano fiber synthesized from precursor polymer by two steps irradiation method using ion and electron beams

Sugimoto, Masaki; Yoshikawa, Masahito; Tsukuda, Satoshi*; Seki, Shuhei*

no journal, ,

A ceramic nano fiber was synthesized from a thin film of precursor polymer using ion-beam irradiation techniques. We fabricate the new control method of the nanofiber radius using ion and electron beams irradiation. Polycarbosilane (PCS) film was irradiated by 490 MeV $$^{192}$$Os$$^{30+}$$ ion beams, subsequently, irradiated by 2 MeV EB. After irradiation, the thin film was developed by solvent, subsequent pyrolysis converted polymeric into inorganic SiC nano fibers. The radius of PCS nano fiber increased with the dose of EB irradiation. The two step irradiation method using ion and electron beams enables to increase the radius of the nano fiber; therefore it has been expected to be a standing nano fiber as high efficiency catalyst materials.
