Structural 130 K phase transition and emergence of a two-ion Kondo state in Ce$$_2$$Rh$$_2$$Ga explored by $$^{69,71}$$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance

We have studied the microscopic magnetic properties, the nature of the 130 K phase transition, and the ground state in the recently synthesized compound Ce$$_2$$Rh$$_2$$Ga by use of $$^{69,71}$$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The NQR spectra clearly show an unusual phase transition at $$T_tsim130$$ K, yielding a splitting of the high-temperature single NQR line into two well-resolved NQR lines, providing evidence for two crystallographically inequivalent Ga sites. The NQR frequencies are in good agreement with fully relativistic calculations of the band structure. Our NQR results indicate the absence of magnetic or charge order down to 0.3 K. The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $$1/T_1$$ shows three distinct regimes, with onset temperatures at $$T_t$$ and 2 K. The temperature-independent $$1/T_1$$, observed between $$T_t$$ and 2 K, crosses over to a Korringa process, $$1/T_1propto T$$, below $$sim$$2 K, which evidences a rare two-ion Kondo scenario: The system evolves into a dense Kondo coherent state below 2.0 and 0.8 K probed by the two different Ga sites.

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

The structure of a neutron-rich $$^{25}$$F nucleus is investigated by a quasifree ($$p,2p$$) knockout reaction. The sum of spectroscopic factors of $$pi 0d_{5/2}$$ orbital is found to be 1.0 $$pm$$ 0.3. The result shows that the $$^{24}$$O core of $$^{25}$$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $$^{24}$$O nucleus, and the core consists of $$sim$$35% $$^{24}$$O$$_{rm g.s.}$$, and $$sim$$65% excited $$^{24}$$O. The result shows that the $$^{24}$$O core of $$^{25}$$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $$^{24}$$O nucleus. The result may infer that the addition of the $$0d_{5/2}$$ proton considerably changes the neutron structure in $$^{25}$$F from that in $$^{24}$$O, which could be a possible mechanism responsible for the oxygen dripline anomaly.

We have studied the electronic structure of ferrimagnetic Mn$$_{2}$$VAl single crystals by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and resonant soft X-ray inelastic scattering (RIXS). We have successfully observed the XMCD signals for all the constituent elements. The Mn L$$_{2,3}$$ XAS and XMCD spectra are reproduced by spectral simulations based on density-functional theory, indicating the itinerant character of the Mn 3$$d$$ states. On the other hand, the V 3$$d$$ electrons are rather localized since the ionic model can qualitatively explain the V L$$_{2,3}$$ XAS and XMCD spectra. This picture is consistent with local $$dd$$ excitations revealed by the V L$$_{3}$$ RIXS.

Structure and stability of montmorillonite edge faces (110), (010), (100), and (130) of the layer charges y = 0.5 and 0.33 are investigated by the first-principles electronic calculations based on the density functional theory. Stacking and single layer models are tested for understanding the effect of stacking on the stability of montmorillonite edge faces. Most stacking layers stabilize the edge faces by making hydrogen bonds between the layers; therefore, the surface energy of stacking layers is reduced rather than the single layer model. This indicates that the surface energy of edge faces should be estimated depending on the swelling conditions. Lowest surface energies of (010) and (130) edge faces were realized by the presence of Mg ions on the edge faces. These edge faces have a strong adsorption site for cations due to local negative charge of the edges.

Improvement of accuracy of neutron nuclear data for minor actinides (MAs) and long-lived fission products (LLFPs) is required for developing innovative nuclear system transmuting these nuclei. In order to meet the requirement, the project entitled as "Research and development for Accuracy Improvement of neutron nuclear data on Minor ACtinides (AIMAC)" has been started as one of the "Innovative Nuclear Research and Development Program" at October 2013. The AIMAC project team is composed of researchers in four different fields: differential nuclear data measurement, integral nuclear data measurement, nuclear chemistry, and nuclear data evaluation. By integrating all of the forefront knowledge and techniques in these fields, the team aims at improving the accuracy of the data. The background, overall plan, and recent progress of the AIMAC project will be reviewed.

Size and dopant-concentration dependence of photoluminescence properties of ion-implanted phosphorus- and boron-codoped Si nanocrystals

Semiconductor nanocrystals have unique electrical and optical properties, because of the quantum confinement effect, and the doping of impurities into nanocrystals. In this study, we investigated the photoluminescence (PL) properties of phosphorus- (P) and boron- (B) co-doped Si nanocrystals (Si NCs), which was synthesized using an ion implantation technique. The Si-NC size (average diameter: 3.5, 4.4, 5.2 nm) and the P and B ion doses (0.1-4.5$$times$$10$$^{16}$$ cm$$^{-2}$$)values were systematically varied. We find that the PL peak energy shifts to lower values with increasing the average diameters of Si NCs and PB ion dose. The results of PL measurements indicate that the PL spectra are due to the band-to-band transition at the reduced Si-NC band gap caused by the formation of impurity and the radiative transitions between defect- and/or impurity-related localized states. It was found that the PL properties can be controlled by varying the Si-NC size as well as the dopant concentration.

After the accident at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, various numerical criteria relevant to radiation protection were defined. We surveyed these criteria through internet. As a result of survey, the following 13 items were identified: (1) criteria for taking stable iodine tablets, (2) criteria for the screening of surface contamination, (3) evacuation area, sheltering area, etc., (4) activity concentrations in food, drinking water, etc., (5) dose limit for radiation workers engaged in emergency work, (6) guideline levels of radioactive substances in bathing areas, (7) criteria for use of school buildings and schoolyards, (8) restriction on planting rice, (9) acceptable activity concentrations in feedstuff, (10) acceptable activity concentrations in compost, (11) criteria for export containers and ships, (12) criteria for contaminated waste, (13) standards for radiation workers engaged in decontamination work. In this report, the basis of and issues on these criteria are summarized.

Yield of single- and double-strand breaks and nucleobase lesions in fully hydrated plasmid DNA films irradiated with high-LET charged particles

The yield of DNA damage produced in fully hydrated plasmid DNA films has been investigated to determine the linear energy transfer (LET) dependence of damage induction. The yield of single strand breaks (SSBs) with increasing LET levels of He, C and Ne ions. On the other hand, the yields of prompt double strand breaks (DSBs) increased with increasing LET. SSBs were additionally induced by treatment with base excision repair proteins, glycosylases, indicating that base lesions are produced in the hydrated DNA. This result shows that nucleobase lesions are produced via both chemical reactions with diffusible water radicals and direct energy deposition onto DNA or the hydrated layer. The yield of SSBs or DSBs observed by enzymatic treatment notably decreased with increasing LET. These results indicated that higher LET ions preferentially produce a complex type of damage that might compromise the activities of the proteins used in this study.

We examined the role of root cap and elongation zone cells in root hydrotropism using heavy-ion and laser microbeam. Heavy-ion microbeam irradiation of the elongation zone, but not that of the columella cells, significantly and temporary suppressed the development of hydrotropic curvature. However, laser ablation confirmed that columella cells are indispensable for hydrotropism. Systemic heavy-ion broad-beam irradiation suppressed ${it de novo}$ expression of ${it INDOLE ACETIC ACID 5}$ gene, but not ${it MIZU-KUSSEI1}$ gene. Our results indicate that both the root cap and elongation zone have indispensable and functionally distinct roles in root hydrotropism, and that ${it de novo}$ gene expression might be required for hydrotropism in the elongation zone, but not in columella cells.

For the minimization of the ecological burden originated in nuclear fuel recycling, a new R&D strategy was filed as "Adv.-ORIENT cycle". In the context, mutual precise separation of $$f$$-elements, such as minor actinide (MA)/lanthanides (Lns) and Am/Cm, are highly essential for enhancing the MA ($$^{241}$$Am) burning. The separation and utilization of rare metal fission products (RMFPs; Ru, Tc, etc) are a new direction in the partitioning and transmutation field. Separation of exothermic nuclides, $$^{90}$$Sr, $$^{137}$$Cs as well as MA, will significantly help to improve the repository tasks. A key separation media are ion exchange chromatography (IXC) by tertiary pyridine resin and a catalytic electrolytic extraction (CEE) by Pd$$_{adatom}$$. On challenging the isotope separation of LLFP, theoretical and laboratory studies were begun for $$^{135}$$Cs, $$^{126}$$Sn in the first priority.

The developmental study made at Tono Geoscience Center under the Earthquake Frontier Research Project since 1996 is reported for a brand new technology system called ACROSS (Accurately Controlled, Routinely Operated, Signal System). Several examples of the field application are demonstrated by the test experiments at Tono Mine site. After the developmental works of 10 years, the ACROSS is brought to be a practical method applied to the remote monitoring of temporal variation of underground states at the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory and also it is being applied to the expected focal region of the coming Tokai earthquake near Hamaoka in Shizuoka prefecture. Whereas ACROSS technology is not mature enough yet, it is shown to be a potential and versatile methodology applied even for the health monitoring of the construction such as building strongly coupled with the ground in addition to the underground study.

Theoretical study on the structure and the frequency of isomers of the naphthalene dimer

The structures of the naphthalene monomer and dimer were investigated by performing vibrational analysis. The optimized geometry of the naphthalene monomer was found to be distorted out of plane in MP2/6-31G, MP2/6-31G*, MP2/6-31+G*, MP2/6-311G calculations, while it maintains the plane of symmetry in MP2/6-31G*(0.25) and MP2/cc-pVDZ. Based on the result of the geometrical optimization in the monomer, the MP2/cc-pVDZ level was employed in a calculation of the dimer. The naphthalene dimer has four stable isomers: the naphthalene molecules are bound by the $$pi$$-$$pi$$ interaction in three isomers and by the C-H...$$pi$$ interaction in one isomer. The relative stability of the isomers suggested an enhancement of the $$pi$$-$$pi$$ interaction in the structures with lower symmetry, which could be explained using a molecular-orbital model. Based on the calculated frequencies and the infrared spectrum, the vibrational modes available to experimentally distinguish the isomers were predicted.
