Fission-fragment mass distributions were measured for $$^{237-240}$$U, $$^{239-242}$$Np and $$^{241-244}$$Pu populated in the excitation-energy range from 10 to 60 MeV by multi-nucleon transfer channels in the reaction $$^{18}$$O + $$^{238}$$U at the JAEA tandem facility. Among them, the data for $$^{240}$$U and $$^{240,241,242}$$Np were observed for the first time. It was found that the mass distributions for all the studied nuclides maintain a double-humped shape up to the highest measured energy in contrast to expectations of predominantly symmetric fission due to the washing out of nuclear shell effects. From a comparison with the dynamical calculation based on the fluctuation-dissipation model, this behavior of the mass distributions was unambiguously attributed to the effect of multi-chance fission.

An exotic nucleus $$^{34}$$Al was produced at GANIL, and its absolute value of the $$g$$ factor was measured for the first time. Based on the value and the $$beta$$ decay branching, the ground state of $$^{34}$$Al is most liekly to be $$4^-$$. By comparing the shell model calculation for the $$g$$ factor, it turns out that the ground state of $$^{34}$$Al cannot be described unless a significant excitation from the $$sd$$ to $$pf$$ shells is taken into account. Thus, the nucleus belongs to the so-called "island of inversion." We performed the Monte Carlo shell model calculation, showing that this $$g$$ factor is sensitive not only to the $$N=20$$ gap but also the $$N=28$$ gap.

A project of the fission data measurement as well as the measurement of the neutron capture cross sections, using a surrogate method based on multi-nucleon transfer reactions, is running at JAEA. We have constructed appatus consists of a fission setup including four position-sensitive multi-wire proportional counters (MWPCs) to detect fission fragments and a capture setup containing two anti-Compton LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) spectrometers to measure the $$gamma$$ rays from the populated compound nuclei. Both setups contain a Si $$Delta$$E-E detector to detect outgoing projectile-like particles by which we can identify the populated compound nuclei. We also placed 33 scintillators around the fission setup to detect fission neutrons in coincidence with the fission fragments. The measurements was carried out at the JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator facility. In this contribution, we will present our results on neutron-induced fission and neutron capture cross sections by using the surrogate method.

Spontaneous fissions of $$^{256}$$Fm, $$^{258}$$Fm, and $$^{259}$$Lr have been measured using an $$^{254}$$Es target at the JAEA Tandem Accelerator Facility. These three nuclei show different fission properties: the asymmetric fission, the high total-kinetic-energy (TKE) symmetric fission, and the low TKE symmetric fission, and the mechanisms of these three fissions should be very different. It is of great interest to elucidate how these differences occur. We have produced $$^{256,258}$$Fm in multinucleon-transfer reactions with a $$^{254}$$Es target and $$^{18}$$O projectiles, and produced $$^{259}$$Lr in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{15}$$N,4n) fusion-evaporation reaction. The reaction products were mass-separated with a gas-jet-coupled on-line isotope separator, and were delivered into a rotating wheel alpha- and fission-fragment detection system. By comparing the mass and TKE distributions deduced from the present experimental data, we will discuss the differences in fission mechanism among $$^{256}$$Fm, $$^{258}$$Fm, and $$^{259}$$Lr.

Spontaneous fissions of neutron-rich heavy actinide isotopes $$^{256}$$Fm, $$^{258}$$Fm, and $$^{259}$$Lr have been measured at the JAEA Tandem accelerator facility. $$^{256}$$Fm and $$^{258}$$Fm were produced in a multinucleon transfer reaction with an $$^{18}$$O beam and an extremely rare $$^{254}$$Es target with a half-life of 276 days. Reaction products were mass-separated with an on-line isotope separator (ISOL). A transition between the typical asymmetric mass distribution and a very sharp symmetric one was clearly observed between $$^{256}$$Fm and $$^{258}$$Fm, while the spontaneous fission of $$^{259}$$Lr was found to exhibit mixture of three different fission modes.
