Quantitative imaging of trace elements in solid samples by online isotope dilution laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry

Quantitative imaging of trace elements was successfully performed by online isotope dilution laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (online LA-ICP-IDMS). The sample aerosols produced by LA are mixed online with the mist created from an isotopically enriched spike solution via an in-house cyclonic spray chamber, which has a gas port on the top. Quantification was continuously achieved in each spot; subsequently, quantitative imaging was realized. Fe and Sr were selected as the model elements, and their spot quantifications based on online-isotope dilution. The method was applied to actual biological hard tissues, and the results were compared with electron probe microanalyzer data.

We investigated the variability in $$^{137}$$Cs activity concentration in individual aquatic insects in detritivorous caddisfly (${it Stenopsyche marmorata}$) and carnivorous dobsonfly (${it Protohermes grandis}$) larvae from the Ota River, Fukushima. Caddisfly larvae showed sporadically higher radioactivity, whereas no such outliers were observed in dobsonfly larvae. Autoradiography and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed that these caddisfly larvae samples contained radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs), which are insoluble Cs-bearing silicate glass particles. CsMPs were also found in potential food sources of caddisfly larvae, such as periphyton and drifting particulate organic matter, indicating that larvae may ingest CsMPs along with food particles of similar size. Although CsMPs distribution and uptake by organisms in freshwater ecosystems is relatively unknown, our study demonstrates that CsMPs can be taken up by aquatic insects.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

Recent progress in the energy recovery linac project in Japan

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

This report summarizes the progress of research and development on geological disposal during the surface-based investigation phase (2001-2005) in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory project (HOR), of which aims are to apply the design methods of geological disposal and mass transport analysis to actual geological environments and derive future subjects based on the results. The design methods of geological disposal were reviewed based on the recent knowledge and the advertences were identified. Then the parameters for virtual design of engineered barrier system, backfill deposition hole and tunnel were set up based on actual geological conditions obtained from the surface-based investigations in HOR as an example of actual geological environment. The conceptual structure from site investigation and evaluation to mass transport analysis was represented as a work flow at first. Then following this work flow a series of procedures for mass transport analysis were carried out based on actual geological conditions obtained from the surface-based investigations in HOR to illustrate the functioning of the work flow and the applicability of this methodology. Consequently, knowledge that will help follow-up or future execution and planning activities was obtained.

Aomori Hiba oil is oil of the natural thing origin extracted from the sawdust generated during lumbering of Aomori Hiba that is the tree in Aomori prefecture by the steam distillation. The extracted Aomori Hiba oil has excellent antibacterial and insecticidal effects. To heighten the added value of the Aomori Hiba oil, the water-soluble nano-hiba oil with about 10 nm of particle size was developed by applying emulsification technology to the oil. The emulsified Aomori Hiba oils showed no signs of phase separation and remained intact even six months after its preparation. Since the nano-hiba oil can be sprayed quickly, antibacterial examinations were carried out to explore potential applications in preventions of hospital infection and damages caused by blight and insect in agricultural environments. Furthermore, a novel antibacterial material composed of nano-hiba oil and water-absorption biodegradable gel was investigated. Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogels as support materials for the nano-hiba oil were prepared by irradiating to paste-like aqueous solutions of HPC. Degree of swelling of the HPC hydrogels was influenced by compositions in nano-hiba oils. Subsequently, absorbability in nano-hiba oil as well as the antibacterial effects was evaluated. The HPC hydrogels swollen in the nano-hiba oil mixing silica showed excellent antibacterial effect up to three weeks. Therefore, it was suggested that the hydrogels containing nano-hiba oil are suitable as antibacterial materials.

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is more sensitive than other imaging analysis methods. The method requires matrix-compatible certified reference materials (CRMs) for the quantification of target elements. However, CRMs suitable for biological samples are rarely commercially available, making quantification difficult with conventional LA-ICP-MS methods. This study used a dual gas flow system combined with an isotope dilution method. In this system, two aerosols, an ablation sample and a nebulised spike solution, are mixed via a proprietary dual-port chamber. The developed method was used to quantify Fe and Sr in the CRMs and agreed with the certified values. In addition, biological samples (teeth and otoliths) were analysed and compared with values obtained by conventional chemical analysis to demonstrate their potential application for quantitative mapping.

The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) incident, triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March 2011, resulted in the release of significant quantities of radionuclides into the terrestrial and marine environments of Fukushima Prefecture. While the activity of radiocesium (i.e., $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs) in these environments has decreased since the accident, continuous inputs through rivers draining and eroding the main terrestrial radioactive plume have been measured, maintaining elevated levels of $$^{137}$$Cs in riverine and coastal sediment deposited off the Prefecture's coast. Consequently, identifying the sources of sediment is required to elucidate the links between terrestrial and marine radiocesium dynamics and to anticipate the fate of persistent radionuclides in the environment.
