Mass-resolved momentum imaging of three dichloroethylene isomers by femtosecond laser-induced coulomb explosion

Wada, Yoriko*; Akagi, Hiroshi*; Kumada, Takayuki; Itakura, Ryuji*; Wakabayashi, Tomonari*

Photochem (Internet), 2(3), p.798 - 809, 2022/09

Coulomb explosion experiments using 60 fs laser pulses were conducted for structural characterization of three dichloroethylene isomers. Under laser intensity at 1.8 $$times$$ 10$$^{14}$$ W/cm$$^2$$, mass-resolved momentum imaging (MRMI) for selected fragment ions of $$^{35}$$Cl$$^+$$ and C$$^{2+}$$ revealed different patterns for the three isomers. The C$${2+}$$ ion fragmented from multiply charged trans-1,2-DCE was forced to leave perpendicularly to the direction of the laser polarization, due to recoil forces from adjacent cations. In contrast, the fast ions of C$${2+}$$ from cis-1,2-DCE exhibited an isotropic distribution, whereas the fast ions of C$${2+}$$ from 1,1-DCE recoiled along the laser polarization together with the slow C$${2+}$$ ions, and thereby distinction of the three isomers was demonstrated. Coulomb explosion occurs predominantly at specific orientation, which is useful for potential applications of MRMI analysis to molecular structure assays.

The Liquid Nitrogen (LN$$_{2}$$) manufacturing facility in HTTR, is a high-pressure gas manufacturing facility. The facility provides LN$$_{2}$$ to cold charcoal trap (CCT) in primary and secondary helium purification systems, impurities gas trap for gas chromatography mass spectrometer in primary and secondary helium sampling systems. The facility has been performed periodical inspection according to the law and rule, and each inspection item satisfied the judgment value. Thus, it was confirmed that the maintenance of LN$$_{2}$$ manufacturing facility was appropriate. In addition, the effective and efficient LN$$_{2}$$ amount to be consumed was clarified on the basis of the monitoring. Results of the liquid level of the storage tank and the consumption of LN$$_{2}$$ as the reactor was operated or stopped, by considering the filling frequency and amount of the filling of LN$$_{2}$$ to the facility by a tank lorry. This report describes method and result of periodical inspection and equipment management.

During normal operation of High Temperature engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the reactivity is controlled by the Control Rods (CRs) system which consists of 32 CRs (16 pairs) and 16 Control Rod Drive Mechanisms (CRDMs). The CR system is located in stand-pipes accompanied by the Reserved Shutdown System (RSS). In the unlikely event that the CRs fail to be inserted, the RSS is provided to insert B$$_{4}$$C/C pellets into the core. The RSS shall be designed so that the reactor should be held subcriticality from any operation condition by dropping in the pellets. The RSS consists of B$$_{4}$$C/C pellets, hoppers which contain the pellets, electric plug, driving mechanisms, guide tubes and so on. In accidents when the CRs cannot be inserted, an electric plug is pulled out by a motor and the absorber pellets fall into the core by gravity. A trouble, malfunction of one RSS out of sixteen, occurred during a series of the pre-start up checks of HTTR on February 21, 2005. We investigated the cause of the RSS trouble and took countermeasures to prevent the issue. As the result of investigation, the cause of the trouble was attributed to the following reason: In the motor inside, The Oil of grease of the multiplying gear flowed down from a gap of the oil seal which has been deformed and was mixed with abrasion powder of brake disk. Therefore the adhesive mixture prevented a motor from rotating.
