Occupation sites and valence states of Co dopants in (La, Co)-codoped M-type Sr ferrite; $$^{57}$$Fe and $$^{59}$$Co nuclear magnetic resonance studies

To specify preferential occupation sites of Co substituents and to clarify charge and spin states of Co ions in (La, Co)-cosubstituted hexagonal magnetoplumbite-type (M-type) Sr ferrite, $$^{57}$$Fe and $$^{59}$$Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra are measured under zero and external magnetic fields using powdered and single crystalline specimens. To a considerable degree, the charge compensation between La$$^{3+}$$ and Co$$^{2+}$$ works in the equal (La, Co)-codoped case, where more than half of the Co ions are considered to be present in the minority spin $$4f_1$$ sites at the center of the oxygen tetrahedra, with the $$S$$ = 3/2 state carrying a small orbital moment owing to spin-orbit interaction. The remaining small number of high-spin Co$$^{2+}$$ ($$S$$ = 3/2, $$L$$ = 1) ions with unquenched orbital moments would be distributed to the other octahedral $$12k$$, $$2a$$, and $$4f_2$$ sites.

The normal state properties of a noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo$$_3$$Al$$_2$$C are studied by means of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment. The change of NMR line shape and the peak of the nuclear spin-echo decay rate at $$simeq$$ 130 K indicate that the Mo$$_3$$Al$$_2$$C exhibits the phase transition prior to the emergence of superconductivity. The reduction in the conduction electron density is inferred from the decrease in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. The nature of the newly found phase transition is discussed by considering the result of the first principle calculations, indicating a good nesting property of the Fermi surfaces.

The results of $$^{27}$$Al nuclear magnetic resonance and specific-heat measurements of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo$$_3$$Al$$_2$$C are reported. The phase transition around 130 K is inferred from a distinct change in the NMR spectrum, a clear peak in the spin-echo decay rate, and an anomaly in the specific heat. Possibility of charge-density wave ordering around 130 K is discussed by calculating the Fermi surfaces in the normal states and considering the partial quenching of the Fermi surfaces with the decrease in 1/$$T$$$$_1$$ below the superconducting transition temperature.

Non-condensable gas for the pressurization of accumulator (ACC) tanks of emergency core cooling system may flow into the primary system during loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCAs) in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) after the ACC coolant injection is completed. Since the non-condensable gas may travel to and accumulates in steam generators (SGs) U-tubes, primary cooling and depressurization via SG secondary-side depressurization would become ineffective because of the degradation of condensation heat transfer in SG U-tubes. Since quantitative measurement of gas concentration is necessary to clarify the influences of non-condensable gas on the depressurization in ROSA/LSTF experiments that simulate PWR LOCAs and transients, an apparatus using a Zirconia oxygen sensor has been developed to directly measure the gas concentration in steam by introducing air as the non-condensable gas for the ACC pressurization. This apparatus is improved and applied to LSTF experiments where the gas concentration is measured directly in vessel upper head where gas may pass through with steam and in SG outlet plenum where gas accumulates. This report describes the improvement of the apparatus and the results of oxygen gas measurement characterization tests and the LSTF secondary-side depressurization experiments.

no journal, ,

Zero field NMR experiments have been done using powdered samples and single crystals of SrFe$$_{12}$$O$$_{19}$$ and La-Co co-substituted Sr$$_{1-x}$$La$$_x$$Fe$$_{12-x}$$Co$$_{x}$$O$$_{19}$$. The single crystals were grown by the flux method. $$^{59}$$Co NMR signals have been observed in the lower frequency range of 50-100 MHz and in the higher frequency range of 300-400 MHz. Spectral intensity in the lower frequency range is stronger than that in the higher frequency range. We will discuss the spin and charge states of Co ions using the NMR results, some complementary experiments and theoretical considerations.
