The structures of Eu complexes in the adsorbents prepared with various extractants were evaluated by ion beam induced luminescence analysis in an extraction chromatography for minor actinides recovery. The luminescence of Eu was measured with a proton beam obtained from the single-ended accelerator and an argon ion beam obtained from the azimuthally varying field cyclotron in Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application in National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology. In this study, it was confirmed that the spectral shape of Eu complexes in the adsorbents varied depending on the kinds of extractants, and the correlation between the change in the spectra and the structures of Eu complexes was investigated.

Environmental radiation monitoring around the Tokai Reprocessing Plant has been performed by the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories, based on "Safety Regulations for the Reprocessing Plant of Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Chapter IV - Environmental Monitoring". This annual report presents the results of the environmental monitoring and the dose estimation to the hypothetical inhabitant due to the radioactivity discharged from the plant to the atmosphere and the sea during April 2021 to March 2022. In this report, some data include the influence of the accidental release from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (the trade name was changed to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. on April 1, 2016) in March 2011. Appendices present comprehensive information, such as monitoring programs, monitoring methods, monitoring results and their trends, meteorological data and discharged radioactive wastes. In addition, the data which were influenced by the accidental release and exceeded the normal range of fluctuation in the monitoring, were evaluated.

In an extraction chromatography method for minor actinides recovery, analysis for the structure of complex in a silica-based adsorbent has been studied to separate minor actinides efficiently. In this study, Eu was used as simulated material of minor actinides, and silica-based adsorbents containing Eu complex were prepared. The ion beam induced luminescence spectra of Eu complexes in silica-based adsorbents were measured, and the basic data for the structures of Eu complexes were obtained.

Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

Initial oxidation of GaN(0001) epilayers and subsequent growth of thermal oxides in dry oxygen ambient were investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. It was found that, whereas initial oxide formation tends to saturate at temperatures below 800$$^{circ}$$C, selective growth of small oxide grains proceeds at dislocations in the epilayers, followed by noticeable grain growth leading to rough surface morphology at higher oxidation temperatures. This indicates that oxide growth and its morphology are crucially dependent on the defect density in the GaN epilayers. Structural characterizations also revealed that polycrystalline $$alpha$$- and $$beta$$-phase Ga$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ grains in an epitaxial relation with the GaN substrate are formed from the initial stage of the oxide growth. On the basis of these experimental findings, we also developed a comprehensive model for GaN oxidation mediated by nitrogen removal and mass transport.

The superior physical and electrical properties of AlON gate dielectrics on AlGaN/GaN substrates in terms of thermal stability, reliability, and interface quality were demonstrated by direct AlON deposition and subsequent annealing. Nitrogen incorporation into alumina was proven to be beneficial both for suppressing intermixing at the insulator/AlGaN interface and reducing the number of electrical defects in Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ films. Consequently, we achieved high-quality AlON/AlGaN/GaN metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors with improved stability against charge injection and a reduced interface state density as low as 1.2$$times$$10$$^{11}$$ cm$$^{-2}$$eV$$^{-1}$$. The impact of nitrogen incorporation into the insulator was discussed on the basis of experimental findings.

Interface reactions between Ti-based electrodes and n-type GaN epilayers were investigated by synchrotron radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Metallic Ga and thin TiN alloys were formed at the interface by subsequently depositing Al capping layers on ultrathin Ti layers even at room temperature. By comparing results from stacked Ti/Al and single Ti electrodes, the essential role of Al capping layers serving as an oxygen-scavenging element to produce reactive Ti underlayers was demonstrated. Further growth of the metallic interlayer during annealing was observed. A strategy for achieving low-resistance ohmic contacts to n-GaN with low-thermal-budget processing is discussed.

Comprehensive study by means of physical and electrical characterizations revealed distinct impacts of AlOx interlayers, plasma oxidation.

Production cross sections of astatine isotopes $$^{207-211}$$At in the 29-57 MeV $$^7$$Li induced reaction with $$^{nat}$$Pb target have been measured by $$alpha$$- and $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry. Excitation functions of production cross sections have been compared with a statistical model calculation to study the reaction mechanism of $$^7$$Li + $$^{nat}$$Pb. Considerably small experimental cross sections of $$^{210}$$At and $$^{209}$$At compared with the calculation were clearly observed at incident energies higher than 44 MeV, indicating that the effects of breakup reaction play a role. A chemical separation of astatine from an irradiated lead target has been studied with a dry-distillation method. A complementary way to produce astatine isotopes has been developed.

We present multi-isotopic evidence of microbially mediated sulfate reduction in a granitic aquifer, a representative of the terrestrial crust habitat. Deep groundwater of meteoric origin was collected from underground boreholes drilled into the Cretaceous Toki granite, central Japan. A large sulfur isotopic fractionation of 20-60 permil diagnostic to microbial sulfate reduction is associated with the investigated groundwater containing sulfate below 0.2 mM. In contrast, a small carbon isotopic fractionation ($$<$$ 30 permil) is not indicative of methanogenesis. Our results demonstrate that the deep biosphere in the terrestrial crust is metabolically active and playing a crucial role in the formation of reducing groundwater even under low energy fluxes.

An understanding of the mechanisms responsible for formation or decomposition of GeO$$_{x}$$ interlayer and Ge diffusion into high-$$k$$ layer is important to develop advanced metal/high-$$k$$ gate stacks for Ge MOSFETs. In this work, we fabricated HfO$$_{2}$$/GeO$$_{x}$$/Ge gate stacks by ${it in situ}$ oxidation of thin metal Hf layers on Ge substrates. The effect of plasma oxidation on the change in the bonding states of Ge atoms in HfO$$_{2}$$/GeO$$_{x}$$/Ge gate stacks and the structural changes induced by metal electrode deposition and thermal annealing was systematically investigated by synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SR-PES) and electrical characterization.

Titanium nitrides (TiN) are non-stoichiometric compounds and show covalent properties as well as metallic and ionic properties, which make them fascinating for both fundamental research and technological applications. The purpose of this work is to study changes of the crystallographic and electronic structures of Ti films by heating and by nitriding during N-implantation into Ti films separated from NaCl(001) substrates, using in-situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with the instrument for electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and then to clarify the atomistic nitriding processes of Ti thin films due to the N-implantation with the aid of molecular orbital calculations. The present calculations throw light on the hcp-fcc transformation mechanism between fcc-Ti sublattices and hcp sublattices due to the release of H atoms or due to the implantation of N atoms, taking into account the bonding interaction of Ti sublattices with ligand H or N atoms.

The fuel ratio in a DT burning plasma can be derived from the intensity ratio of DD/DT neutrons, and detecting a trace of DD neutrons in the DT burning plasma is a key issue. A new type of neutron spectrometer is proposed to monitor the fuel ratio in the core of the ITER plasma. The system based on a conventional time-of-flight method consists of a water cell as a neutron scattering material and tens of scintillator pairs arranged around the first scintillator in a corn shape. We call it a multi-scattering time-of-flight neutron spectrometer (MS-TOF). A trial experiment was conducted for the prototype MS-TOF system with a DT neutron beam (20-mm diameter) at the Fusion Neutronics Source (FNS), Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The experimental results show that the DD and DT neutron peaks are clearly observed, and the experiment has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of the MS-TOF concept for detecting trace-DD neutrons within a DT neutron beam extracted from a DT burn plasma.

Selective extraction of Americium(III) over macroscopic concentration of Lanthanides(III) by synergistic system of TPEN and D2EHPA in 1-octanol

The synergistic extraction with N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-methylpyridyl)-ethylenediamine (TPEN) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) demonstrates a good selectivity for Am(III) over macro amount of Ln(III) in 1-octanol. The maximum apparent separation factor, which is defined as the ratio of the distribution ratio of Am(III) to that of Eu(III), is ca. 80 while the molar fraction between D2EHPA and TPEN is 2.0. This ratio is corresponding to the result of the spectrophotometric titration, which indicates that TPEN and D2EHPA form an aggregate in 1-octanol and two D2EHPA molecules coordinate to Eu(III) TPEN complex, [Eu(TPEN)]$$^{3+}$$. In the present study, the association of D2EHPA and TPEN is one of the most important factors for the synergistic extraction and the complexation of TPEN and D2EHPA with Eu(III).
