The cooling of the residual core materials after the fuel discharge from the SFR core in the core disruptive accident can significantly affect the distribution fraction of the core materials which is an important factor for the in-vessel retention (IVR). The cooling of the residual core materials is called "in-place cooling". For the evaluation of the in-place cooling, behavior in a SFR core was simulated by SIMMER-III, and method of phenomena identification and ranking table (PIRT) was applied based on the analysis result. Experiment which focuses on the thermal-hydraulic phenomena which were extracted by the PIRT was conducted in the framework of EAGLE-3 project. Continuous oscillation of sodium level which can occur in the phase of in-place cooling of SFRs was observed in the experiment, and analysis by the SIMMER-III was conducted. By investigation of the analysis result, difference between the experiment and analysis results was revealed to be due to remaining and occupation of non-condensable gas above the sodium level which would be unrealistic in the experiment. Gas mixture model between non-condensable gas and sodium vapor was developed to solve this problem, and coincidence between experiment and analysis results was largely improved by this new model.

In sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs), it has been pointed out that molten fuel may be discharged from the core during a severe accident (SA) accompanied by core damage, and may solidify into debri particles with diameters ranging from several millimeters to several hundred micrometers due to interaction with the sodium coolant and accumulate at the bottom of the reactor vessel. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the behavior of such debri particles appropriately to evaluate the SA event progression. To meet these requirements, a molten fuel behavior analysis code using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD), a kind of particle method, has been developed as a part of the SPECTRA code, tool for consistent analysis of in-vessel and ex-vessel events in sodium fast reactor accidents. In this study, it was found that the new analyses code can reproduce sedimentation behavior of particles by adding a new stress term in the shear direction.

In the geological disposal study of high-level radioactive waste, it is suggested that the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) which is created around a tunnel by the excavation will be possible to be one of the critical path of radionuclides. Especially, the progress of cracks in and around the EDZ with time affects the safety assessment of geological disposal and it is important to understand the hydraulic change due to the progress of cracks in and around EDZ. In this collaborative research, monitoring tools made by Obayashi Corporation were installed at a total of 9 locations in the three boreholes near the depth of 370 m of East Shaft at the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory constructed in the Neogene sedimentary rock. The monitoring tool consists of one set of "optical AE sensor" for measuring of the mechanical rock mass behavior and "optical pore water pressure sensor and optical temperature sensor" for measuring of groundwater behavior. This tool was made for the purpose of selecting and analyzing of AE signal waveforms due to rock fracture during and after excavation of the target deep shaft. As a result of analyzing various measurement data including AE signal waveforms, it is able to understand the information on short-term or long-term progress of cracks in and around EDZ during and after excavation in the deep shaft. In the future, it will be possible to carry out a study that contributes to the long-term stability evaluation of EDZ in sedimentary rocks in the deep part of the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory by evaluation based on these analytical data.

The cooling of the residual core materials after the fuel discharge from the core in the accident of SFRs can significantly affect the distribution fraction of the core materials, which is an important factor for the in-vessel retention (IVR). For the evaluation of the cooling of the residual core materials which is called "in-place cooling", behavior in a SFR core was analyzed preliminary by SIMMER-III. Based on the analysis result, method of phenomena identification and ranking table (PIRT) was applied. Fundamental experiment focusing on three thermal-hydraulic phenomena those were extracted by PIRT was considered in order to investigate them and utilize it for validation of the SIMMER-III. To achieve continuous oscillation of sodium level which can occur in the phase of in-place cooling of SFRs, analytical survey was conducted by SIMMER-III. As a result of that, the effects of experimental conditions on the oscillation amplitude and the duration time were clarified quantitatively, which are necessary to determine the specific experimental conditions.

Two-phase flow through porous media must be well understood to develop a severe accident analysis code not only for light water reactor but also sodium-cooled fast reactor. When a core disruptive accident occurs in sodium-cooled fast reactor, the fuel inside the core become melted and interacts with the coolant. As a result, gas-liquid two-phase flow will be formed in the debris bed, which may have porous nature depending on the cooling process. In such condition, the local porosity and its distribution are very important to characterize two-phase flow field in the porous media. In this study, X-ray radiography was applied to measure the local porosity in the packed bed of spheres. The radial profiles were estimated from the chordal profiles measured by the X-ray method and compared with the previous porosity model. In addition, the void fraction radial profiles were also obtained in air-water two-phase flow.

Cooling and denudation history of the Tsuruga body of Kojaku granite, southwest Japan, constrained from multi-system thermochronology

We applied multi-system thermochronology to the Tsuruga body of the Kojaku granite to constrain the cooling/denudation history of the Tsuruga area. Based on the thermochronometric results and other data, we reconstructed the cooling and denudation histories of the Tsuruga body as below: (1) the Tsuruga body intruded at c.a. 68 Ma at the depth of 4-5 km, (2) rapidly cooled down to c.a. 200$$^{circ}$$C by heat conduction within a few million years or less, and (3) slowly cooled due to peneplanation during the Cenozoic. This cooling/denudation history is consistent with the observations that cataclasite and fault gouge are dominant in the crush zones of the Tsuruga body, that similar slow cooling histories over the Cenozoic are estimated in the surrounding areas based on thermochronometric ages, and that the amount of denudation in the last few million years in the Tsuruga area is inferred at less than several hundred meters from the elevations of the uplifted peneplains.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (hereinafter referred to as JAEA) has been conducted a geoscientific research and development project at the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory and the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory in order to construct scientific and technological basis for geological disposal. As a collaborative research between JAEA and Tokyo Sokki Kenkyujo Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as TML), we focused on the fiber-optic crack detection sensor developed by TML as a method to detect cracks in the support system that may affect the stability of rock cavern during the operation. To verify long-term safety performance of the sensor for decades, "Evaluation test of long-term durability of fiber-optic crack detection sensor and the support system" at the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory and "Performance evaluation test of fiber-optic crack detection sensor for in-situ crack detection" at the Horonobe Underground Laboratory Research Laboratory were conducted. As the result, we understand that fiber-optic crack detection sensor is applicable measurement method to promptly detect the cracks in the support system.

We have synthesised the research results from Mizunami/Horonobe URLs and geo-stability projects in the second mid-term research phase. It could be used as technical bases for NUMO/Regulator in each decision point from sitting to beginning of disposal (Principal Investigation to Detailed Investigation Phase). High quality construction techniques and field investigation methods have been developed and implemented and these will be directly applicable to the National Disposal Program (along with general assessments of hazardous natural events and processes). It will be crucial to acquire technical knowledge on decisions of partial backfilling and final closure by actual field experiments in Mizunami/Horonobe URLs as main themes for the next phases.

Stress corrosion cracking behavior of type 304 stainless steel irradiated under different neutron dose rates at JMTR

In order to investigate the effect of neutron dose rate on tensile property and irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) growth behavior, the crack growth rate (CGR) test, tensile test and microstructure observation have been conducted with type 304 stainless steel specimens. The specimens were irradiated in high temperature water simulating the temperature of boiling water reactor (BWR) up to about 1dpa with two different dose rates at the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR). The radiation hardening increased with the dose rate, but there was little effect on CGR. Increase of the yield strength of specimens irradiated with the low dose rate condition was caused by the increase of number density of frank loops. Little difference of radiation-induced segregation at grain boundaries was observed in specimens irradiated by different dose rates. Furthermore, there was little effect on local plastic deformation behavior near crack tip in the crystal plasticity simulation.

Experimental study of nonlinear processes in edge turbulence of toroidal plasmas

Nonlinear processes between meso-scale structures and turbulent fluctuations in the edge region of the toroidal plasmas were studied using the bispectrum analysis. In the JFT-2M tokamak, divertor plasmas were investigated as well as the limiter plasmas, and the amplitude and phase of the bispectrum function of the potential fluctuation were found to be consistent with an analysis of the drift wave-zonal flow system. In the CHS machine, the edge plasmas during the H-mode were investigated. It was found that the edge potential begins to decrease before the decrease of the intensity of the deuterium line (by about 30ms), and the edge fluctuations are found to be composed of low frequency MHD fluctuations, drift wave like broad band electrostatic fluctuations and high frequency electromagnetic fluctuations. Nonlinear coupling between the MHD fluctuations and the electrostatic fluctuations or the electromagnetic fluctuations were found for the first time.

Observation of nonlinear processes between coherent fluctuations and turbulent fluctuations in the edge regions of JFT-2M and CHS

The results of the analyses of nonlinear processes in the plasma in JFT-2M tokamak and CHS machine are reported. In both machines, the measurements of the fluctuations were done by electrostatic probes. The obtained bicoherence and biphase from the potential data in JFT-2M were found to be close to the values obtained from a theoretical model of the interaction of the zonal flow and the drift wave turbulence. Therefore the experimentally obtained nonlinear interaction is considered to be that interaction of the zonal flow and the drift wave turbulence. By the analysis of the CHS H-mode plasma, a marked nonlinear interaction was found between a characteristic MHD magnetic fluctuation and density turbulence. By analysing the cross bispectrum of the density fluctuation and the potential fluctuation, it was found that the fluctuating particle flux is affected by the MHD oscillation. As stated above, we progressed in the investigation of the nonlinear processes of the edge plasmas.
