The contamination of radioactive materials leaked from the reactor has resulted in numerous hot spots in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) building, posing obstacles to its decommissioning. In order to solve this problem, JAEA has conducted research and development of the digital technique for inverse estimation of radiation source distribution and countermeasures against the estimated source in virtual space for two years from 2021 based on the subsidy program "Project of Decommissioning and Contaminated Water Management" performed by the funds from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. In this article, we introduce the results of the project and the plan of the renewal project started in April 2023. For the former project, we report the derivative method for LASSO method considering the complex structure inside the building and the character of the source and show the result of the inverse estimation using the method in the real reactor building. Moreover, we explain the platform software "3D-ADRES-Indoor" which integrates these achievements. Finally, we introduce the plan of the latter project.

Level structures of $$^{56,58}$$Ca cast doubt on a doubly magic $$^{60}$$Ca

Gamma decays were observed in $$^{56}$$Ca and $$^{58}$$Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from $$^{57,59}$$Sc. For $$^{56}$$Ca, a $$gamma$$ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for $$^{58}$$Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the $$2^{+}_{1} rightarrow 0^{+}_{gs}$$ decays. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for $$2^{+}_{1}$$ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the $$0_{f5/2}$$ and $$0_{g9/2}$$ orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic $$^{60}$$Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to $$^{70}$$Ca or even beyond.

Based on the regulations (the safety regulation of Tokai Reprocessing Plant, the safety regulation of nuclear fuel material usage facilities, the radiation safety rule, the regulation about prevention from radiation hazards due to radioisotopes, which are related with the nuclear regulatory acts, the local agreement concerning with safety and environment conservation around nuclear facilities, the water pollution control law, and by law of Ibaraki Prefecture), the effluent control of liquid waste discharged from the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories of Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been performed. This report describes the effluent control results of the liquid waste in the fiscal year 2021. In this period, the concentrations and the quantities of the radioactivity in liquid waste discharged from the reprocessing plant, the plutonium fuel fabrication facilities, and the other nuclear fuel material usage facilities were much lower than the limits authorized by the above regulations.

The low-lying level structure of $$^{59}$$V and $$^{61}$$V was investigated for the first time. The neutron knockout reaction and inelastic proton scattering were applied for $$^{61}$$V while the neutron knock-out reaction provided the data for $$^{59}$$V. Four and five new transitions were determined for $$^{59}$$V and $$^{61}$$V, respectively. Based on the comparison to our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja (LNPS) interaction, three of the observed $$gamma$$ rays for each isotope could be placed in the level scheme and assigned to the decay of the first 11/2$$^{-}$$ and 9/2$$^{-}$$ levels. The ($$p$$,$$p'$$) excitation cross sections for $$^{61}$$V were analyzed by the coupled-channels formalism assuming quadrupole plus hexadecapole deformations. Due to the role of the hexadecapole deformation, $$^{61}$$V could not be unambiguously placed on the island of inversion.

The one-neutron knockout from $$^{52}$$Ca was performed at $$sim$$230 MeV/nucleon combined with prompt $$gamma$$ spectroscopy. The momentum distributions corresponding to the removal of $$1f_{7/2}$$ and $$2p_{3/2}$$ neutrons were measured. The cross sections are consistent with a shell closure at the neutron number $$N = 32$$, found as strong as at $$N = 28$$ and $$N = 34$$ in Ca isotopes from the same observables. The analysis of the momentum distributions leads to a difference of the root-mean-square radii of the neutron $$1_{f7/2}$$ and $$2p_{3/2}$$ orbitals of 0.61(23) fm, in agreement with the modified-shell-model prediction of 0.7 fm suggesting that the large root-mean-square radius of the $$2p_{3/2}$$ orbital in neutron-rich Ca isotopes is responsible for the unexpected linear increase of the charge radius with the neutron number.

A superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter is an ideal X-ray detector for experiments at accelerator facilities because of good energy resolution and high efficiency. To study the performance of the TES detector with a high-intensity pulsed charged-particle beam, we measured X-ray spectra with a pulsed muon beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Japan. We found substantial temporal shifts of the X-ray energy correlated with the arrival time of the pulsed muon beam, which was reasonably explained by pulse pileup due to the incidence of energetic particles from the initial pulsed beam.

We observed electronic $$K$$X rays emitted from muonic iron atoms using a superconducting transition-edge-type sensor microcalorimeter. The energy resolution of 5.2 eV in FWHM allowed us to observe the asymmetric broad profile of the electronic characteristic $$K$$$$alpha$$ and $$K$$$$beta$$ X rays together with the hypersatellite $$K$$$$alpha$$ X rays around 6 keV. This signature reflects the time-dependent screening of the nuclear charge by the negative muon and the $$L$$-shell electrons, accompanied by electron side-feeding. Assisted by a simulation, this data clearly reveals the electronic $$K$$- and $$L$$-shell hole production and their temporal evolution during the muon cascade process.

Direct proton-knockout reactions of $$^{55}$$Sc were studied at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Populated states of $$^{54}$$Ca were investigated through $$gamma$$-ray and invariant-mass spectroscopy. Level energies were calculated from the nuclear shell model employing a phenomenological inter-nucleon interaction. Theoretical cross sections to states were calculated from distorted-wave impulse approximation estimates multiplied by the shell model spectroscopic factors. Despite the calculations showing a significant amplitude of excited neutron configurations in the ground-state of $$^{55}$$Sc, valence proton removals populated predominantly the ground-state of $$^{54}$$Ca. This counter-intuitive result is attributed to pairing effects leading to a dominance of the ground-state spectroscopic factor. Owing to the ubiquity of the pairing interaction, this argument should be generally applicable to direct knockout reactions from odd-even to even-even nuclei.

Thermally altered subsurface material of asteroid (162173) Ryugu

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

The nuclear structure of $$^{51}$$Ar was studied by the ($$p$$,2$$p$$) reaction using $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy for the bound and unbound states. Comparing the results to our shell-model calculations, two bound and six unbound states were established. The low cross sections populating the two bound states of $$^{51}$$Ar could be interpreted as a clear signature for the presence of significant sub-shell closures at neutron numbers 32 and 34 in argon isotopes.

Low-lying excited states in the $$N$$ = 32 isotope $$^{50}$$Ar were investigated by in-beam $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multinucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3$$^{-}$$ state. The level scheme built using $$gamma$$ $$gamma$$ coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the $$sd-pf$$ model space and to ${it ab initio}$ predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to 2$$^{+}$$ states, while the previously proposed 4$$^{+}_{1}$$ state could also correspond to a 2$$^{+}$$ state.

A communication avoiding multigrid preconditioned conjugate gradient method (CAMGCG) is applied to the pressure Poisson equation in a multiphase CFD code JUPITER, and its computational performance and convergence property are compared against the conventional Krylov methods. The CAMGCG solver has robust convergence properties regardless of the problem size, and shows both communication reduction and convergence improvement, leading to higher performance gain than CA Krylov solvers, which achieve only the former. The CAMGCG solver is applied to extreme scale multiphase CFD simulations with 90 billion DOFs, and its performance is compared against the preconditioned CG solver. In this benchmark, the number of iterations is reduced to $$sim 1/800$$, and $$sim 11.6times$$ speedup is achieved with keeping excellent strong scaling up to 8,000 nodes on the Oakforest-PACS.

Self-organization of zonal flows and isotropic eddies in toroidal electron temperature gradient driven turbulence

Self-organization in the toroidal electron temperature gradient driven (ETG) turbulence is investigated based on a global gyrokinetic model in a weak magnetic shear configuration. Because of global profile effects, toroidal ETG modes with higher toroidal mode number n are excited at the outer magnetic surfaces, leading to strong linear wave dispersion. The resulting anisotropic wave turbulence boundary and the inverse energy cascade generate the self-organization of zonal flows, which is the unique mechanism in the global gyrokinetic model. The self-organization is confirmed both in the decaying turbulence initialized by random noises and in the toroidal ETG turbulence. It is also shown that the self-organization process generates zonal flows and isotropic eddies depending on a criterion parameter, which is determined by the ion to electron temperature ratio and the turbulence intensity.

Excited states in the $$N$$ = 40 isotone $$^{62}$$Ti were populated via the $$^{63}$$V($$p$$,$$2p$$)$$^{62}$$Ti reaction at $$sim$$200 MeV/nucleon at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the $$2_1^+ rightarrow 0_{rm gs}^+$$ and $$4_1^+ rightarrow 2_1^+$$ transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring $$^{64}$$Cr and $$^{66}$$Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings.

Implementation and performance evaluation of a communication-avoiding GMRES method for stencil-based code on GPU cluster

A communication-avoiding generalized minimum residual method (CA-GMRES) is implemented on a hybrid CPU-GPU cluster, targeted for the performance acceleration of iterative linear system solver in the gyrokinetic toroidal five-dimensional Eulerian code GT5D. In addition to the CA-GMRES, we implement and evaluate a modified variant of CA-GMRES (M-CA-GMRES) proposed in our previous study to reduce the amount of floating-point calculations. This study demonstrates that beneficial features of the CA-GMRES are in its minimum number of collective communications and its highly efficient calculations based on dense matrix-matrix operations. The performance evaluation is conducted on the Reedbush-L GPU cluster, which contains four NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPUs per compute node. The evaluation results show that the M-CA-GMRES is 1.09x, 1.22x and 1.50x faster than the CA-GMRES, the generalized conjugate residual method (GCR), and the GMRES, respectively, when 64 GPUs are used.
