Based on the regulations (the safety regulation of Tokai Reprocessing Plant, the safety regulation of nuclear fuel material usage facilities, the radiation safety rule, the regulation about prevention from radiation hazards due to radioisotopes, which are related with the nuclear regulatory acts, the local agreement concerning with safety and environment conservation around nuclear facilities, the water pollution control law, and by law of Ibaraki Prefecture), the effluent control of liquid waste discharged from the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories of Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been performed. This report describes the effluent control results of the liquid waste in the fiscal year 2022. In this period, the concentrations and the quantities of the radioactivity in liquid waste discharged from the reprocessing plant, the plutonium fuel fabrication facilities, and the other nuclear fuel material usage facilities were much lower than the limits authorized by the above regulations.

A long-term geosphere stability for geological disposal is evaluated by the past geological environmental changes and modern conditions. Stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios ($$delta$$D, $$delta$$$$^{18}$$O) of geological samples are useful information to estimate the past environmental changes and modern conditions. Recently, the thermal conversion elemental analyzer and isotope ratio mass spectrometer (TC-EA/IRMS) were installed in the Tono Geoscience Center for $$delta$$D and $$delta$$$$^{18}$$O measurements of geological samples. In this study, we reported analytical methods of $$delta$$D and $$delta$$$$^{18}$$O using international standard reference materials. In addition, evaluation tests of uncertainty by repeated analyses of the standards were performed using the TC-EA/IRMS. Furthermore, the $$delta$$D and $$delta$$$$^{18}$$O analyses by the TC- EA/IRMS were also applied to fault rock samples.

Latent ion tracks were finally observed in diamond

Injecting high-energy heavy ions in the electronic stopping regime into solids can create cylindrical damage zones called latent ion tracks. Although these tracks form in many materials, none have ever been observed in diamond, even when irradiated with high-energy GeV uranium ions. Here we report the first observation of ion track formation in diamond irradiated with 2-9 MeV C$$_{60}$$ fullerene ions. Depending on the ion energy, the mean track length (diameter) changed from 17 (3.2) nm to 52 (7.1) nm. High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM) indicated the amorphization in the tracks, in which $$pi$$-bonding signal from graphite was detected by the electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).

Improvement of the longitudinal phase space tomography at the J-PARC synchrotrons

Longitudinal phase space tomography is an effective measurement tool for acquiring the longitudinal phase space distribution. For the J-PARC synchrotrons, tomography, which can take into account the beam dynamics such as longitudinal space charge effect and nonlinearity, is desired, as the beam power increases. In this study, for the J-PARC synchrotron, the CERN's tomography, which employs the hybrid algorithm that can consider the beam dynamics for reconstruction, is introduced and benchmarked. The benchmark results show that the CERN's tomography has the ability to measure the longitudinal phase space distribution accurately, in the high-power beam operation at the J-PARC synchrotrons.

The J-PARC 3GeV synchrotron (RCS) provides high intensity proton beams to the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) and the Main Ring (MR). The harmonic number (h) of the RCS is 2 and the RCS normally accelerates two bunches. For some experiments at the MLF, a single bunch is preferred. In this case, one of the rf bucket is filled with protons and the other is empty. Therefore the beam intensity is halved. If the RCS can accelerate with h=1, the intensity per bunch can be doubled, enabling to provide single bunch beams to the MLF with the maximum intensity. This possibly increases the MR beam power by injecting high intensity single bunches eight times. In this presentation, we report mainly on the consideration of h=1 acceleration in the RCS by longitudinal simulations.

Beam separation experiment with prototype non-destructive electrostatic septum and study for device improvement

We have been developing "Non-destructive electrostatic septum" for a slow extraction. This septum has multiple electrodes placed around the region without the beam hitting and separate the beam by its electric field. To evaluate its electric field, we have built a prototype septum and a test machine, which consists of an electron gun and monitors. This test machine can measure the electric field indirectly by using a narrow electron beam. The experiment results of prototype septum is good agreement with the calculation one. However, this electric field distribution is not enough to separate the beam. A step function-like electric field distribution is ideal for the beam separation with minimal negative effect on the beam. We have studied to improve the electrode configuration to match the beam shape. In this paper, we present the result of the electric field measurements and the septum improvement. Additionally, we describe the future plan of this development.

Simple and rapid method for geochemically discriminating of paleotsunami deposits using a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry system; Application to boring cores from the Shizuoka plain on the Pacific coast of central Japan

To improve a geochemical discrimination method of paleotsunami deposit, quantitative analysis of major and trace elements in boring cores from the Shizuoka plain on the Pacific coast of middle Japan was performed using a portable energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry system (portable XRF). Geochemical approaches by the portable XRF contribute to study of the simple and rapid methods for detecting paleotsunami deposits. Most of our quantitative data by portable XRF were good agreement with reported values measured by stationary-type energy dispersive XRF in previous studies. Therefore, the portable XRF can be applied to geochemical study in the samples from Shizuoka plain in our case.

The application of MA cores to the accelerating rf cavities in high intensity proton synchrotrons was pioneered for the J-PARC synchrotrons. The MA cavities can generate high accelerating voltages. The wideband frequency response of the MA cavity enables the frequency sweep without the tuning loop. The dual harmonic operation is indispensable for the longitudinal bunch shaping to alleviate the space charge effects in the RCS. These advantages of the MA cavity are also disadvantages when looking at them from a different perspective. Since the wake voltage consists of several harmonics, the beam loading compensation must be multiharmonic. The operation of tubes in the final stage amplifier is not trivial when accelerating very high intensity beams; the output current is high and the anode voltage is also multiharmonic. We summarize our effort against these issues in the operation of the RCS and MR for more than 10 years.

Secondary consolidation characteristic of bentonite by long-term consolidation tests of 2.7, 3.7 and 4 years

It has been reported that the deformation greatly increased in the secondary consolidation process in the past long-term consolidation test of 1.8 years on Na-type bentonite/sand mixed soil. Therefore, we analyzed potential contributing factors in this behavior. A long-term consolidation test for about 10 years on bentonite and kaolinite was started using the test equipment with countermeasures against these factors. In this paper, the secondary consolidation behavior of bentonite was investigated based on the long-term consolidation test data for 2.7, 3.7 and 4 years. The results were generally consistent with the conventional findings on soil mechanics that the deformation due to secondary consolidation progresses linearly with respect to logarithm of time. This test will be continued for about 10 years and longer-term secondary consolidation behavior will be investigated.

An inner-box typed hot cell for analysis of highly radioactive samples has been operated for about 40 years in Tokai Reprocessing Plant since its installation in 1980. During the operation of analytical hot cell, improvement and upgrades including auxiliary equipment have been performed, in addition to keep the equipment in proper condition through periodic inspections and maintenance. This paper describes about these efforts for analytical hot cell and its results.

The Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) employs Magnetic Alloy (MA) loaded cavities. We realize multi-harmonic rf driving and beam loading compensation owing to the broadband characteristics of the MA. The currently installed cavity is the conventional type one which is designed to be driven by tube amplifiers in a push-pull operation. The push-pull operation has some advantages, i.e., suppressing a higher harmonic distortion without the beam acceleration and shortening the cavity length. However, a disadvantage arises at the high intensity beam acceleration where the multi-harmonic rf driving causes a severe imbalance of the anode voltage swing and restricts the tube operation. Although we have achieved an acceleration for the design beam power of 1 MW, the imbalance becomes an issue to further increase the beam power. We have developed a single-ended MA cavity to avoid such difficulty. The cavity has no tube imbalance intrinsically and it is found that the power consumption to drive the cavity can be reduced compared with the conventional one.

Analysis work report on removal of spent fuel sheared powder for decommissioning of main plant

Flush-out, by which nuclear materials in the Tokai Reprocessing Plant process are recovered, has been started in June 2022 as the first step of decommissioning. Flush-out consists of removal of spent fuel sheared powder, plutonium solution, uranium solution, and the other nuclear materials. Removal of spent fuel sheared powder has been completed in September 2022. During removal of spent fuel sheared powder, uranium concentration, plutonium concentration, acid concentration, radioactivity concentration, and solution density have been analyzed for process control. For nuclear material accountancy, uranium concentration, plutonium concentration, isotope ratio, and solution density have been analyzed. Analysis work including sample pretreatment before transportation to IAEA analytical facility for safeguards, and the other operations related to Flush-out such as calibration of analytical instruments, education, and training of operators are reported.

Physical property investigation of gloves for glove boxes in nuclear fuel reprocessing plants; Physical properties of used gloves and estimation of its life-time

Glove-box gloves, that are used for handling nuclear fuel materials at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, have an expiration date by internal rules. All gloves are replaced at a maximum of every 4-year. However, degrees of glove deterioration varies depending on its usage environment such as frequency, chemicals, and radiation dose. Therefore, physical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, hardness of gloves are measured and technical evaluation method for the glove life-time is established. It was found that gloves without any defects in its appearance have enough physical properties and satisfies the acceptance criteria values of new gloves. Thus, it was considered that the expired gloves could be used for total of 8-year, by adding 4-year of new glove life-time. In addition, the results of extrapolation by plotting the glove's physical properties versus the used years showed that the physical properties at 8-year is on the safer side than the reported physical properties of broken glove. Also, the data are not significantly different from the physical properties of the long-term storage glove (8 and 23 years). Based on these results, life-time of gloves at TRP is set to be 8-year. The frequency of glove inspections are not changed, and if any defects is found, the glove is promptly replaced. Thus, the risk related to glove usage is not increased. The cost of purchasing gloves, labor for glove replacement, and the amount of generated waste can be reduced by approximately 40%, respectively, resulting in more efficient and rationalized glove management.

At the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), theoretical predictions have indicated that the kicker-impedance would excite the beam-instability. A 1 MW beam with large emittance can be delivered to the Material and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) through suppression of the beam instabilities by choosing the appropriate machine parameters. However, we require other high-intensity and high-quality smaller emittance beams (than the 1 MW beam) for the Main Ring (MR). Hence, we proposed a scheme for suppressing the kicker-impedance by using prototype diodes and resistors, thereby demonstrating the effect on the kicker impedance reduction. However, the J-PARC RCS must be operated with a repetition rate of 25 Hz, which urged us to consider special diodes that are tolerant to heating. After developments, we have demonstrated that the special diodes with resistors can suppress the beam instability by reducing the kicker impedance. Enhanced durability of the prototype diodes and resistors for the 25 Hz operation was also realized. Moreover, the new diodes and the resistors have negligible effect on the extracted beam from the RCS. From a simulation point of view, the scheme can be employed for at least 5 MW beam operation within the stipulated specifications.
