It is challenging to clearly distinguish the impacts of the optical field and collisional ionization in the evolution of the charge state of a plasma produced when matter interacts with high-intensity laser pulses. In this work, time-dependent calculations of plasma kinetics are used to show that it is possible only when low-density gaseous targets with sufficiently small clusters are used. In the case of Ar plasma, the upper limit of the cluster radius was estimated to be $$R_0 = 0.1 mu$$m.

CuI is a well-known superionic conductor in a high temperature solid phase where the mobile cations migrate between interstitial sites in the f.c.c. sublattice formed by iodine ions. Even in the molten state, it shows several features suggesting collective or cooperative ionic motion. MD results show that Cu diffuses much faster than I. The Cu-Cu partial structure factor have a FSDP which indicates a medium-range ordering of Cu ions. Moreover the Cu-Cu partial pair distribution deeply penetrates into the nearest neighboring Cu-I shell. To reveal origin such anomalous behaviors of molten CuI, we performed quaiselastic neutron scattering (QENS) by the disk-chopper spectrometer AMATERAS at MLF, J-PARC. To interpret the total dynamic structure factor obtained from coherent QENS, the mode distribution analysis was applied. It is found that the motion of iodine is a kind of fluctuating within an almost local area while Cu ions diffuse much faster than iodine ions.

Rare earths (4$$f$$) and actinides (5$$f$$) provide variety of interesting states realized with competing interactions between the increasing number of $$f$$ electrons. Since crystal field splitting of many-body $$f$$ electron system is smaller than the bandwidth, (1) high resolution experiments are needed, (2) essentially no clear spectrum with well defined peaks is expected in itinerant Ce and U compounds, and (3) Np and Pu is strictly regulated. Therefore, systematic research on magnetic excitations by neutron scattering experiments of localized compounds and rare earth iso-structural reference is useful. We describe the $$f$$ electron states of heavy electron compounds NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and actinide and rare earth based iso-structural family.

The Cryogenics and Magnets group in the Sample Environment team is responsible for operation of cryostats and magnets for user's experiments at the MLF in J-PARC. We have introduced a top-loading $$^4$$He cryostat, a bottom-loading $$^3$$He cryostat, a dilution refrigerator insert and a superconducting magnet. The frequency of use of them dramatically becomes higher in these two years, as the beam power and the number of proposal increase. To respond such situation, we have made efforts to enhance performance of these equipment as follows. The $$^3$$He cryostat originally involves an operation software for automatic initial cooling down to the base temperature and automatic re-charge of $$^3$$He. Recently we made an additional program for automatic temperature control with only the sorb heater. Last year, a new outer vacuum chamber of the magnet with an oscillating radial collimator (ORC) was fabricated. The data quality was drastically improved by introducing this ORC so that the magnet can be used even for the inelastic neutron scattering experiments.

There are elemental liquid metals with complex structures far from the hard sphere (HS) packing model. Liquid Bi has an asymmetric first peak in the structure factors S(Q). The pair distribution function g(r) exhibits strange distance ratio of 1:2 between the first and the second peaks. Since a HS model with two kinds of radius produces asymmetry of the main peak in S(Q), existence of short-lived covalent bonds was discussed. Contrarily, modulation of the atomic distribution by the Friedel oscillations of shielding electrons around metallic ions was discussed. To examine its bonding nature from viewpoints of dynamic correlation functions, we have measured neutron quasielastic scattering of liquid Bi by using cold disk chopper spectrometer installed at MLF of J-PARC. The van Hove function revealed that the shoulder structure located at a longer side of the first peak in g(r) exhibits a longer relaxation time than the main structures such as the first and second peaks.

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were carried out in order to study the $$f$$-electron states of NdPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$The CEF levels at 0K, 35.4K, 88.3K, 101.5K, and 198.8K were clarified from the excitation spectra. The $$Gamma_6$$ ground state contains the orbital with $$J_z=pm9/2$$ as a main component due to a large negative B$$_{20}=-1.4$$K, which is the origin of the strong uniaxial anisotropy. The estimated magnetic moment, the calculated susceptibility, magnetization curve, and specific heat are in good agreement with the experimental data. The existence of a common charge distribution with CePd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and PrPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$. Indicates that a localized character is important even in actinide-based iso-structural compounds as actually observed in UPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and also NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$, in which the valence crossover plays important role for the heavy fermion superconductivity.

Nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $$q$$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $$chi$$"($$E$$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $$chi$$"($$E$$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single chirality mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

Geodynamics of Atotsugawa Fault System, p.157 - 162, 2007/00

Investigation of the behavior of stress and strain in the vicinity of active faults provides valuable data. We have performed continuous strain observation and stress measurements in the active Mozumi-Sukenobe Fault. Two strain meters were installed on both sides of the crushed zones. Characteristic strain variations on both sides indicate right lateral movements that are almost identical to the movements of the fault. The stress measurements also indicate the same pattern as the fault movements, although the values are smaller than usual. The reason proposed is that the crushed zone of the fault can not accumulate stress. The behavior of strain variation suggests that fault movements are caused by the actions of tectonic stress but that the accumulation of this stress is small in the vicinity of the fault stress.

Real-time in-situ observation using photoelectron spectroscopy for elementary processes of Ti(0001) oxidation by O$$_{2}$$ molecules has been performed at the surface reaction analysis apparatus installed at the BL23SU in the SPring-8. And the real-time observation has been also performed by RHEED-AES methods at Tohoku University. The partial pressure region of oxygen was from 2x10$$^{-7}$$ Torr to 8x10$$^{-8}$$ Torr. The surface temperature was 473 K and 673 K. The variation from clean Ti surface toward TiO$$_{2}$$ was comfirmed by observation of Ti-2p and O-1s photoelectron spectra. Reflected electron intensity and O-KLL Auger electron intensity oscillated in the RHEED-AES measurements. These facts revealed that the surface morphological change of the oxidized Ti(0001) surface was associated not only with a disappearance of the surface metallic layer but also with a change of the oxidation state.

Oxidation processes of Ti(0001)-1$$times$$1 clean surface were analyzed by real-time monitoring using a variety of surface analysis methods of XPS, UPS, and AES/RHEED. Following conclusions were obtained by these observations. Oxide layer grows epitaxially at the Ti(0001) surface with a $$sqrt{3}$$$$times$$$$sqrt{3}$$ structure. Surface roughness changes periodically. The period is consistent with that of work function. Low oxidation state (TiO) plays a dominant role in the dissociative adsorption of oxygen molecules. The oxide layer decomposes easily at surface temperature over 673 K. The TiO$$_{2}$$ structure reduces to TiO during thermal decomposition.

Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility at J-PARC started the user program in December 2008. Various neutron experiments are currently performed there in wide range of scientific researches and industrial applications. Standardization of sample environment (SE) equipments is one of the most important things at the beginning stage. Especially in our country, it often happens that each instrument carries and operates SE devices independently. This situation results in an excess of the cost and incompatibility among the instruments unless we have any guidelines. Thus the SE team has discussed the SE-protocol, in which flange size, thermometers, controllers etc. are standardized. This should bring about saving the cost and manpower and increasing compatibility. The SE team is now discussing user support system in SE, preparation of the SE area, and so on. The technical staff members started working on practical things such as cooling test of cryostats.

In large user facilities such as neutron experimental facilities, sample environment (SE) is one of the most important factors to yield high-quality output. In the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) in J-PARC, various neutron experiments have been performed in wide range of scientific researches and industrial applications, and the number and variety of proposals will further increase after resuming operation of J-PARC. At the beginning stage, the SE team in MLF has discussed SE standardization, to save the cost and manpower, to make compatibility among instruments, and to increase the experimental efficiency by sharing the SE devices and techniques for operation. Recently we started preparation of "SE area" in the experimental hall, where we can do maintenance of equipments, pre-cooling of cryostats and so on. The SE team is now discussing future plan including user support system.
