A system is developed for the real-time position detection of single-ions which hits a target with spatial accuracy about 1 $$mu$$m. The system combines highly luminescent, sensitive, scintillators with a high sensitivity luminescence detection system. The real-time detection system contains a Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$:Eu scintillator, Eu implanting into $$alpha$$-Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$. A single-crystal scintillator has been selected since position resolution of emission for powdery scintillator is limited by a grain size, several micrometers for ZnS for example. When the material is irradiated with an electron or ion beam, the Eu is activated and strong luminescence occurs. The detection system includes an image intensifier tube and an electron multiplier CCD camera. The results show that our system can be sufficiently sensitive to detect the hit of a single-ion in real time through simple improvement in emission intensity of the scintillator.

Three electrostatic accelerators at TIARA were operated on schedule in fiscal year 2012 except changing its schedule by cancellations of users. The yearly operation time of the 3 MV tandem accelerator, the 400 kV ion implanter and the 3MV single-ended accelerator were in the same levels as the ordinary one, whose operation time totaled to 2,073, 1,847 and 2,389 hours, respectively. The tandem accelerator had no trouble, whereas the ion implanter and the single-ended accelerator stopped by any troubles for one day and four days, respectively. The molecular ion beam of helium hydride was generated by the ion implanter, because the users required irradiation of several cluster ions in order to study the effect of irradiation. As a result, its intensity of beam was 50 nA at 200 kV. The ion beam of tungsten (W) at 15 MeV was accelerated by the tandem accelerator, whose intensity was 20 nA at charge state of 4+, because of the request from a researcher in the field of nuclear fusion.

Combined techniques of PIXE and IL are currently investigated with proton microbeam for the precise analysis and imaging of microscopic targets. Spectroscopy of IL is able to characterize the chemical composition of the irradiation targets while the wavelength of the IL photons is strongly affected by the chemical-state of the elements. However, IL was not well obtained from the targets with size of micrometers comparing to the PIXE analysis because of the sensitivity and the S/N ratio of IL detection. In this study, we have developed a new optics for the IL measurement using confocal micro lens optics. Anti-reflection-coated convex lens was installed in a microbeam line of 3 MV single ended accelerator for in-air micro-PIXE analysis system. The focal points of the lens were set on the irradiation target and input terminal of optical fiber. The effective focus area on the target was approximately 800 $$times$$ 800 um considering chromatic aberration of the IL photons ranging 300 to 950 nm. Electrically-cooled back-thin CCD spectrometer was used for the spectroscopic analysis of IL with a wavelength resolution of 0.5 nm in the range of 200 to 950 nm. The IL spectrum was clearly observed. The spectral analysis of IL was also applicable to the other natural mineral target and also particulate target like aerosols with different elemental and chemical compositions.

Development of a new scanning ion microbeam analysis and imaging technique; Ion-Luminescence Microscopic Imaging and Spectroscopy (ILUMIS)

Transactions of the Materials Research Society of Japan, 38(3), p.443 - 446, 2013/09

Microscopic imaging and analysis techniques are increasing its importance and being interested from the environmental research fields especially for the target with a complex elemental or chemical structures. Electron or synchrotron-radiation microbeam probes are quite poplar scanning analytical probing techniques for the imaging of such microscopic targets. On the other hand, microbeam techniques using MeV ions have also utilized for such analysis purpose with advantages in the aspect of sensitivity and S/N ratios. However, these Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques like PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission) do not have enough sensitivity in the chemical-state analysis. This limits the application area of IBA techniques compared to the other beam probes. In this study, an new ion microbeam technique with Microscopic by spectroscopic analysis of IL was developed and combined with micro-PIXE system for the simultaneous analysis and imaging of chemical-state distribution in microscopic targets. Spectroscopy of IL from the National Institute of Environmental Science (NIES) aerosol standards was first achieved to visualize chemical state distribution in such microscopic analytical targets with spatial resolution of 1$$mu$$m.
