By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for and orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)% was determined for . Our finding of such a small component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in B. The present work gives the smallest - or -orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features and implies that the dominant occupation of or orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of a neutron halo.

Fusion barrier distributions were extracted from these data, and compared with the coupled-channels calculations. It was found that the peak energies of the barrier distributions for the Ca + Pb and Ti + Pb systems coincide with those of the 2n evaporation channel cross sections for the systems, while that of the Ca + Cm is located slightly below the 4n evaporation ones. This results provide us helpful information to predict the optimum beam energy to synthesize superheavy nuclei.

ZnN is a possible candidate for the diluent material for nitride fuels containing transuranium elements. Pellets of inert matrix material ZrN, and surrogate nitride fuel material DyZrN, are fabricated for the purpose of investigating the crystal structure. Lattice parameters of DyZrN followed the Vegard's low, in spite of the large lattice mismatch ( 7%) between DyN and ZrN. Local structure analysis was performed by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and atomic pair-distribution function (PDF) methods. The Zr-N nearest neighbor bond distance changed as changing the Dy composition. The complex local structure of DyN and ZrN is related to the preferable effects of ZrN.

Only a few measurements of the spectral width of the laser line have been reported, because the spectral width of the X-ray laser is so narrow that the required spectral resolution is quite high. In this study, we took the nickel-like molybdenum X-ray laser as an example, and measure the spectral width by use of the high resolution spectrometer in order to compare it with a theoretical one.

There are three magnetic sub-levels at lower state of the collisional excitation X-ray laser transition of the nickel-like ion X-ray laser medium. The polarization of each transition is circular or linear. Therefore the circularly polarized X-ray laser could be extracted by the influence of the Zeeman effect if the X-ray laser medium was under the external magnetic field. The strength of the magnetic field required for the circularly polarized X-ray laser is determined by the spectral width of the X-ray laser. Only a few measurements of the spectral width of the laser line have been reported, because the spectral width of the X-ray laser is so narrow that the required spectral resolution is quite high. In this study, we took the nickel-like molybdenum X-ray laser as an example and succeeded the measurement of the spectral width of the X-ray laser.

The EXAFS spectra on Zr K-edge are investigated for as-formed Fe-7at%Zr-3at%B amorphous alloys and annealed ones at 693 K and 773 K for an hour in order to reveal local structural changes due to annealing. The analysis shows that the atomic distances of Fe-Zr and Zr-Zr pairs increase during annealing and approach those in a Fe3Zr or/and Fe2Zr metallic comound. The change in the atomic distances suggests that medium range ordered clusters should be formed during annealing.

An x-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) spectroscopy beamline, BL01B1, was installed at a bending magnet source at SPring-8 and has been open to users since October 1997. It was designed for XAFS experiments covering a wide energy range. Position tables and automatical control programs were established to adjust the x-ray optics and achieve the designed performance of the beamline under each experimental condition. This has enabled conventional XAFS measurements to be made with a good data quality from 4.5 to 110 keV.

We tried to generate the circularly polarized X-ray laser by use of the high power pulse magnet system. There are three magnetic sub-levels at lower state of the collisional excitation X-ray laser transition. For example, nickel-like X-ray laser transition (4d (m = 0) - 4p (m = -1, 0, +1)), the polarization from each transitions are right-handed circular (m = -1), left-handed circular (m = +1), and linear (m = 0) along to the quantization axis. If the quantization axis were decided by the magnetic field from the outside of the X-ray laser medium, the circularly polarized X-ray laser can be extracted. In this study, we tried to generate the circularly polarized X-ray laser by using the nickel-like molybdenum X-ray laser medium (18.9 nm) with 20 Tesla magnetic field generated by the pulse power magnet system.

We proposed and demonstrated the polarization control method of an X-ray laser using the magnetic field for the first time. The line of nickel-like molybdenum X-ray laser was separated using a high-resolution spectrometer with strong magnetic field. The result of this experiments implied the left and right handed circularly polarized X-ray laser were generated at the same time. It is very applicable for a circular dichroism measurement.

In order to establish vitrification technology, it is important to clarify how various substances dispersed in glass exist. We made simulated glass by mixing various substances containing metallic element of the platinum group with raw material glass containing SiO-BO glass as the main component. This simulated glass was heated to 600C just above the melting point and observed by an X-ray diffraction experiment. The obtained X-ray diffraction profile revealed the local structure using the pair distribution function (PDF). Since the network structure of SiO is strong, it is considered that the precipitated fine particles become wedges and the Si-O bond length is modulated.
