At the previous symposium in Advanced Photon Research, we proposed and demonstrated the laser pulse compression via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) for increasing the flux of the Compton backscattered X rays. After that, we improved the SBS pulse compression system by introducing the image relay in the laser transport line. As a result, we achieve the stably compressed laser pulse with a duration of 2.1 ns and with an energy of 0.84 J. By installing this system into the Compton backscattered X-ray source, the X-ray flux will be increased 3.2 times for the present system at the KPSI-JAEA.

To carry out these studies, it is essential to develop novel diagnostic systems, such as fusion product measurement systems and high-resolution, high-reliability profile measurement of various plasma parameters. Scientific research on "Advanced Diagnostics for Burning Plasma Experiment" was assigned as a priority area by MEXT in 2004, and more than 20 studies are currently underway under this program. The feasibility of several new diagnostic concepts applicable to ITER is examined and diagnostic components for these systems are now under development.

The mission of NCT is to establish high beta steady-state operation for DEMO and to contribute to ITER. The machine flexibility and mobility is pursued in aspect ratio and shape controllability, feedback control of resistive wall modes, wide current and pressure profile control capability for the demonstration of the high-b steady state.

The machine design is carried out to investigate the capability for the flexibility in aspect ratio and shape controllability for the demonstration of the high-beta steady state operation with nation-wide collaboration, in parallel with ITER towards DEMO. Two designs are proposed and assessed with respect to the physics requirements such as confinement, stability, current drive, divertor, and energetic particle confinement. The operation range in the aspect ratio and the plasma shape is widely enhanced in consistent with the sufficient divertor pumping. Evaluations of the plasma performance towards the determination of machine design are presented.

New evaluations of neutron nuclear data for Uranium, Plutonium, and Thorium isotopes which are essential for applications to nuclear technology were carried out for the Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, JENDL-3.3. The objectives of the current release of JENDL were to fix several problems which have been reported for the previous version, to improve the accuracy of the data, and to evaluate covariances for the important nuclides. Quantities in JENDL-3.2 were extensively re-evaluated or replaced by more reliable values. The heavy nuclide data in JENDL-3.3 were validated with several benchmark tests, and it was reported that the current release gave a good prediction of criticalities.

Sodium is the most promising candidate of an FBR coolant because of its excellent properties such as high thermal conductivity. Whereas, sodium reacts with water/air and its opaqueness makes it difficult to inspect sodium components. These weaknesses of sodium affect not only plant safety but also plant availability (economy). To overcome these sodium weak points, the appropriate countermeasure must be adopted to commercialized FBR plants. This report describes the working group activities for sodium/water reaction of steam generators (SG), in-service inspection for sodium components and sodium leak due to sodium components boundary failure. The prospect of each countermeasure is discussed in the viewpoint of the commercialized FBR plants. (1)Sodium/water reaction. The principle of the countermeasure for sodium/water reaction accidents was organized in the viewpoint of economy (the investment of SG and the plant availability). The countermeasures to restrain failure propagation were investigated for a large-sized SG. Preliminary analysis revealed the possibility of minimizing tubes failure propagation by improving the leak detection system and the blow down system. Detailed failure propagation analysis will be required and the early water leak detection system and rapid blow down system must be evaluated to realize its performance. (2)In-service inspection (ISI&R). The viewpoint of the commercialized plant's ISI&R was organized by comparing with the prototype reactor's ISI&R method. We also investigated short-term ISI&R methods without sodium draining to prevent the degrading of the plant availability, however, it is difficult to realize them with the present technology. Hereafter, the ISI&R of the commercialized plants must be defined by considering its characteristics. (3)Sodium leak from the components. This report organized the basic countermeasure policy for primary and secondary sodium leak accidents. Double-wall structure of sodium piping was ...

The major problems of the JENDL-3.2 data were solved by the new library: overestimation of criticality values for thermal fission reactors was improved by the modifications of fission cross sections and fission neutron spectra for U; incorrect energy distributions of secondary neutrons from important heavy nuclides were replaced with statistical model calculations; the inconsistency between elemental and isotopic evaluations was removed for medium-heavy nuclides. Moreover, covariance data were provided for 20 nuclides. The reliability of JENDL-3.3 was investigated by the benchmark analyses on reactor and shielding performances. The results of the analyses indicate that JENDL-3.3 predicts various reactor and shielding characteristics better than JENDL-3.2.

A Subcriticality measurement technique was developed to improve safety and efficiency of criticality safety control in nuclear fuel processing facilities. In the development, two measurement techniques based on reactor noise analysis were selected as candidates of subcriticality measurement technique applicable to severe situations in FBR fuel reprocessing plants. The research activity was performed in Deuterium Critical Assembly (DCA) which was partly reconstructed from the original core of the advanced thermal reactor, so that light water and FBR type fuel could be used as in the FBR fuel reprocessing plants. Through the research, each technique was improved to satisfy criteria for subcriticality monitoring technique in FBR fuel reprocessing plant. Since the two techniques have basically different features while using common devices, thier combination would be a simple and reliable measurement system. This report summarizes processes and results of the research activity in DCA.
