Characterization of microstructures by X-ray diffraction line profile analysis, 2; Line profile analysis using synchrotron radiation

Zairyo, 69(4), p.343 - 347, 2020/04

Dislocation density is a very important physical quantity in the evaluation of fatigue of metallic materials. Generally, the dislocation density is evaluated by a scanning electron microscope. Recently, a method generated the dislocation density from the width of the X-ray diffraction profile has been proposed. In this study, we report the application of this technology to synchrotron radiation. Five diffraction profiles were obtained with a two-dimensional detector during tensile loading of the austenitic stainless steel SUS316L, and the dislocation density was calculated from the line profile analysis. As a result, the dislocation density increased sharply after plastic deformation, and the value was in good agreement with the result separately measured with a scanning electron microscope. In the future, it is expected that the line profile analysis will contribute to the elucidation of the mechanism of fatigue fracture by measuring the dislocation density from the local area in materials.

After the accident at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, various numerical criteria relevant to radiation protection were defined. We surveyed these criteria through internet. As a result of survey, the following 13 items were identified: (1) criteria for taking stable iodine tablets, (2) criteria for the screening of surface contamination, (3) evacuation area, sheltering area, etc., (4) activity concentrations in food, drinking water, etc., (5) dose limit for radiation workers engaged in emergency work, (6) guideline levels of radioactive substances in bathing areas, (7) criteria for use of school buildings and schoolyards, (8) restriction on planting rice, (9) acceptable activity concentrations in feedstuff, (10) acceptable activity concentrations in compost, (11) criteria for export containers and ships, (12) criteria for contaminated waste, (13) standards for radiation workers engaged in decontamination work. In this report, the basis of and issues on these criteria are summarized.

The radiolytic behavior of ${it N,N,N',N'}$-tetraoctyldiglycolamide, ${it N,N'}$-dimethyl-${it N,N'}$-dioctyl-2-(3'-oxapentadecyl)malonamide, and ${it N,N}$-dioctylhexanamide in ${it n}$-dodecane was investigated by irradiation with $$gamma$$-rays and electron pulses. The results showed ${it n}$-dodecane has a sensitization effect on the radiolysis of these amides, owing mainly to a charge transfer from radical cations of ${it n}$-dodecane to the amide molecules in the primary process observed in pulse radiolysis.

Journal of Nuclear and Radiochemical Sciences, 6(1), p.55 - 60, 2005/07

The ion transport from one aqueous phase (W1) to another (W2) across a bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) in a cell system in the presence of a hydrophobic ion or an ionophore was investigated by voltammetry. The hydrophobic ion was distributed into the BLM with the counter ion to hold the electroneutrality within the BLM. It was pointed out that the counter ion could transfer between W1 and W2 across the BLM since concentrations of the counter ion in W1, BLM and W2 were so high as to cause the ion transfer current while concentrations of the hydrophobic ion were very low. The facilitated transports of alkali ions across a BLM containing valinomycin (Val) used as an ionophore were also investigated by considering the hydrophobicity of both the objective cation and the counter anion and the formation of the alkali metal ion-Val complex..

A dislocation density increases and fatigue failure of the structure occur, when a metal is deformed. In this study, dislocation density of a broken 0.3 mm thick SUS316L specimen was calculated by line profile analysis obtained by high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction method, and a relationship between fatigue fracture and dislocation density was evaluated. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the dislocation density abruptly increases as approaching the fracture part. In addition, it was revealed that the bcc structure appeared in the fcc structure which is the basic structure in the fracture part. In steel, the increase in dislocation density is closely related to the increase in material strength, and the material strength of steel with bcc structure is known to be higher than that with fcc structure. So, it seems that the structure has changed due to a sharp increase in dislocation density at the fracture part.

J-PARC E07, an experiment with emulsion technique, is carrying out to detect 10 times higher statistics of double hypernuclei compared to the past experiments. This experiment aims to obtain quantitative data on baryon-baryon interaction, such as $$Lambda$$-$$Lambda$$ and $$Xi$$-nucleon interaction, by the mass measurement of various double hypernuclei. We completed beam exposure and photographic processing of the all emulsion modules as scheduled in 2018. In this presentation, the current status of the experiment, progress of analysis, the detection efficiency, and the schedule are introduced. As of Jan. 2019, we have scanned about 53% of 1300 emulsion sheets at least once. We have detected 22 candidate events of double hypernuclei.

This experiment aims to obtain quantitative data on $$Lambda$$-$$Lambda$$ and $$Xi$$-nucleon interaction, by the mass measurement of various double hypernuclei. As of July 2019, we have scanned about 53% of 1300 emulsion sheets at least once and detected about 30 candidate events of double hypernuclei. We start a study of the branching ratio of the decay mode with the accumulating data. However, the detection efficiency is about half of the designed value. It is due to the rugged surface position of emulsion module. We are developing the correction method to reconstruct its original geometry by using proton tracks which punch through SSD and emulsion sheets.

J-PARC E07 is an experiment to detect double hypernuclear events with the largest statistics in the past using photographic emulsion sheets. Experimental data on $$Lambda$$-$$Lambda$$ and $$Xi$$-nucleon interaction, are obtained by mass measurements of various double hypernuclei. The main step in the analysis of this experiment is the tracking of $$Xi^-$$ particles in emulsion sheets under optical microscopes. We expect to complete the first period analysis of all the sheets by March 2020. The number of events obtained in the first period is about 40% of the planned yield. The remaining events will be detected in the second search in the near future. It is considered that the cause of missing $$Xi^-$$ particles was that the prediction of the incident position of $$Xi^-$$ particles was incorrect due to poor flatness of the uppermost stream sheet. Therefore, we are trying to correct the surface position and find the missing $$Xi^-$$ particles.
