For the J-PARC E40 experiment which aims to measure differential cross-sections of Sp scatterings, a system to detect scattered proton from Sp scatterings is under development. The detection system consists of scintillation fibers with a MPPC readout. A prototype and a readout electronics for MPPC have already been developed. The prototype consisting of a scintillation fiber tracker and a BGO calorimeter was tested with a proton beam of 80 MeV. Energy resolutions of the tracker of 22.0% (s) and the calorimeter of 1.0% (s) were obtained for 1 MeV and 70 MeV energy deposit, respectively. The prototype readout electronics has an ASIC for multichannel operation, EASIROC, and a Silicon TCP (SiTCP) interface to communicate with a DAQ system. Its data transfer rate measured was 14 kHz. Required performances for the prototype system have been achieved except for the energy resolution of the prototype fiber tracker.

Summary of International PFM Round Robin analyses among Asian Countries on reactor pressure vessel integrity during pressurized thermal shock

Kanto, Yasuhiro*; Jhung, M.*; Ting, K.*; He, Y.*; Onizawa, Kunio; Yoshimura, Shinobu*

The International Round Robin (RR) activity was performed by the Probabilistic Fracture Mechanics (PFM) sub-committees of the Atomic Energy Research Committee of the Japan Welding Engineering Society (JWES) in conjunction with Korean, Taiwanese and Chinese research groups. The purposes of this program are to establish reliable procedures for evaluating the fracture probability of reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) during pressurized thermal shock (PTS) and to maintain the continuous cooperation among Asian institutes in the probabilistic approach to nuclear safety. This paper describes the outline of the problems and summarizes the results from all participant countries. The RR activity consists of two parts; deterministic analyses on stress and temperature in the reactor pressure vessel wall during PTS, and probabilistic analyses on vessel fracture probability due to PTS transients. The differences caused by the selection of analyzing programs and some input parameters are discussed.

Here we show that the three-dimensional cubic system of Tl$$_2$$Ru$$_2$$O$$_7$$ most probably evolves into a one-dimensional spin-one Haldane system with a spin gap below 120 K, accompanied by anomalies in the structure, resistivity, and susceptibility. We argue that these anomalies are due to an orbital ordering of Ru $$4d$$ electrons, with a strong coupling among three degrees of freedom: orbital, spin, and lattice. Our work provides a unique example of the spontaneous formation of Haldane system with an insight into the intriguing interplay of different degrees of freedom.

Potential inhalation dose due to remediation activities in the Fukushima exclusion zone

no journal, ,

Inhalation dose depends on the kind and amount of inhaled radionuclides, but also on the size of radioactive particles and the solubility of the radionuclides in the lungs. Initial measurements during decontamination provide experimental data of the main parameters. These are particle size distribution with activity median aerodynamic diameter (AMAD) and geometric standard deviation and the solubility in the lungs. The dose assessment is performed according ICRP lung model using the computer code IMBA professional. Doses determined from measured parameters are compared to those using ICRP default values. Variability is studied and the range of potential inhalation dose is assessed.
