In this study, we systematically investigate three-dimensional(3D) momentum-resolved electronic structures of Ruddlesden-Popper-type iridium oxides Sr$$_{n+1}$$Ir$$_{n}$$O$$_{3n+1}$$ using soft-X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES). Our results provide direct evidence of an insulator-to-metal transition that occurs upon increasing the dimensionality of the IrO$$_{2}$$-plane structure. This transition occurs when the spin-orbit-coupled $$j_{eff}$$ = 1/2 band changes its behavior in the dispersion relation and moves across the Fermi energy. By scanning the photon energy over 350 eV, we reveal the 3D Fermi surface in SrIrO$$_{3}$$ and $$k_{z}$$-dependent oscillations of photoelectron intensity in Sr$$_{3}$$Ir$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$. To corroborate the physics deduced using low-energy ARPES studies, we propose to utilize SX-ARPES as a powerful complementary technique, as this method surveys more than one whole Brillouin zone and provides a panoramic view of electronic structures.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) tuned for Cu $$L$$ edge is a possible tool to detect charge excitations in cuprate superconductors. We theoretically investigate the possibility for observing a collective charge excitation by the RIXS. The RIXS process via the intermediate state inevitably makes the spectral weight of charge excitation stronger in electron doping than in hole doping. Electron-hole asymmetry also appears in dynamical charge structure factor, showing a new enhanced small-momentum low-energy mode in electron doping. These facts indicate a possibility of detecting the new charge mode by RIXS in electron-doped systems.

Novel ground-state spin structures in undoped and doped manganites are here investigated based on the orbital-degenerate double-exchange model, by using mean-field and numerical techniques. In undoped manganites, a new antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, called the E-type phase, is found adjacent in parameter space to the A-type AFM phase. Its structure is in agreement with recent experimental results. This insulating E-AFM state is competing with a ferromagnetic metallic phase as well, suggesting that large magneto-resistant effects could exist even in undoped manganese oxides. For doped layered manganites, the phase diagram includes another new AFM phase of the $${rm C_x E_{1-x}}$$-type. Experimental signatures of the new phases are discussed.
