$$mu$$SR studies on copper minerals

Quantum states are difficult to observe experimentally. In addition, ideal model materials have not been found for some of the lattice systems in which exotic quantum states are predicted to be realized. Numerous candidates for low-dimensional quantum magnets are hidden in copper minerals, and the number of candidates is increasing every year. We succeeded to synthesize seven copper minerals by imitating the environment where they are discovered and reported their quantum states. The properties of pulsed muons are very suitable for investigating the spin state of artificial copper minerals.

Brightening triplet excitons enable high-performance white-light emission in organic small molecules via integrating n-$$pi^*/pi$$-$$pi^*$$ transitions

Luminescent materials that simultaneously embody bright singlet and triplet excitons hold great potential in optoelectronics, signage, and information encryption. However, achieving high-performance white-light emission is severely hampered by their inherent unbalanced contribution of fluorescence and phosphorescence. Herein, we address this challenge by pressure treatment engineering via hydrogen bonding cooperativity effect to realize the mixture of n-$$pi^*/pi$$-$$pi^*$$ transitions, where the triplet state emission was boosted from 7% to 40% in isophthalic acid (IPA). A superior white-light emission based on hybrid fluorescence and phosphorescence was harvested in pressure-treated IPA, and the photoluminescence quantum yield was increased to 75% from the initial 19% (blue-light emission). In-situ high-pressure IR spectra, X ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction reveal continuous strengthening of the hydrogen bonds with the increase of pressure. Furthermore, this enhanced hydrogen bond is retained down to the ambient conditions after pressure treatment, awarding the targeted IPA efficient intersystem crossing for balanced singlet/triplet excitons population and resulting in efficient white-light emission. This work not only proposes a route for brightening triplet states in organic small molecule, but also regulates the ratio of singlet and triplet excitons to construct high-performance white-light emission.

RAIM is an analysis code that analyzes resonance absorption spectra measured at pulsed neutron sources such as the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) to obtain information on nuclear densities and temperatures. By calculating the convolution of the pulse functions of neutron beam and the resonance capture function that is based on the nuclear cross section data, RAIM reproduces the resonance absorption spectrum measured by a pulsed neutron source. Then, RAIM determines the density and temperature of specific nuclides in a sample by performing spectral fitting on the resonance absorption spectrum data. In addition, RAIM is developed to facilitate the analysis of resonance imaging data by minimizing the number of parameters for calculation setup and by providing scripts for processing many resonance absorption spectra measured by a two-dimensional detector at once. This manual explains how to install RAIM on a computer and how to simulate resonance absorption spectra and fit them to measured data.

Comprehensive extraction study using $$N,N$$-dioctylthiodiglycolamic acid; Effect of S donor on metal extraction

Extraction ability of $$N,N$$-dioctylthiodiglycolamic acid (T-DODGAA), a soft-base sulfur donor ligand with an amide group and a carboxylic acid connected by a thioether chain, for 56 metal ions have been comprehensively investigated and compared with that of N,N-dioctyldiglycolamic acid (DODGAA) with an etheric oxygen atom, a hard-base donor. The p$$K_{a}$$ of the thiodiglycolamic acid framework was determined to be 3.71 $$pm$$ 0.06 in water (0.1 M LiCl, 25$$^{circ}$$C ) by potentiometric titration, indicating that T-DODGAA is a slightly weaker acid than DODGAA (p$$K_{a}$$ = 3.54 $$pm$$ 0.03). T-DODGAA can quantitatively extract various metal ions from the 56 metal ions through a proton-exchange reaction. T-DODGAA provided higher extraction performance than DODGAA for Hf(IV), Cr(III), Fe(III), Ni(II), Cu(II), Pd(II), Ag(I), Au(III), Hg(II), Al(III), and Ga(III), especially for soft metal ions. Furthermore, to demonstrate the practical feasibility of T-DODGAA for hydrometallurgy and metal recycling, we performed selective separation tests of rare metal ions such as Sc(III), Ni(II), Co(II), Pd(II), Au(III), In(III), and Ga(II) in metal-mixed extraction systems.

In-situ X-ray imaging of the breakup dynamics of current-carrying molten metal jets during arc discharge

The flow dynamics of current-carrying molten metal jet breakup during arc discharge serves as mass and heat sources in wire-arc-based metal deposition processes, thereby optimizing the resultant product quality. However, the spatiotemporal flow interaction between the molten metal jet and the surrounding arc plasma remains unclear. Here, using in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging, we simultaneously track surface deformation and internal flow in molten aluminum jets during argon arc discharge. We reveal that modulating the magnitude and path of the arc discharge current can accelerate the jet velocity by 200 $$sim$$ 300% beyond its initial injection speed, thereby facilitating significant jet elongation. Our results provide consistent evidence that the jet flow dynamics are predominantly governed by the interaction between the arc discharge current and its coaxial self-induced magnetic field. This study establishes a framework at the intersection of fluid dynamics and electromagnetism, contributing to optimized control and precision in wire-arc-based applications.

The purpose of this study was to clarify effect of glycerol and glucose on the mechanical glass transition and dynamical transition of freeze-dried bacteria at various water activity (aw)-conditions. From the water sorption isotherm, it was noted that the water content at each aw and monolayer water content were higher in the order of glycerol, glucose, non-added samples. Effect of temperature on the mean square displacement (MSD) of atoms in the samples was investigated by incoherent elastic neutron scattering. The MSD increased gradually with an increase in temperature depending on the aw and added solute. From the linear fitting, three dynamical transition temperatures (low-, middle- and high-Tds) were determined. The Couchman-Karasz model suggested that the added solute and bacteria were not completely miscible.

Hydroxyl group/fluorine disorder in deuterated magnesium hydroxyfluoride and behaviors of hydrogen bonds under high pressure

High-pressure responses of the O-D$$cdotcdotcdot$$F hydrogen bonds in deuterated magnesium hydroxyfluoride were investigated using neutron powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The Rietveld analysis at ambient conditions revealed a chemical formula of Mg(OD)$$_{0.920(12)}$$F$$_{1.080(12)}$$ and hydroxyl group/fluorine disorder (OD/F disorder) in the crystal structure, which gave rise to two hydrogen-bonding configurations. The Rietveld analysis showed the hydrogen-bonding geometries remains up to 9.8 GPa, indicating no pressure-induced strengthening of hydrogen bonds. The Raman spectra at ambient conditions showed three hydroxyl stretching bands at 2613, 2694, and 2718 cm$$^{-1}$$. The high frequencies of the O-D stretching modes indicated that the hydroxyls should be involved in weak or none hydrogen-bonding interactions. Up to 20.2 GPa, the mode initially centered at 2694 cm$$^{-1}$$ displayed a pressure-induced blue shift, revealing no strengthening of hydrogen bonds under compression. We discuss the existence of hydrogen bonds and the causes of the blue-shifting hydroxyls at ambient and at high pressures.
