A Preliminary validation study for removal performance of iodine gas in sodium pool with a simplified approach

Kam, D. H.*; Grabaskas, D.*; Starkus, T.*; Bucknor, M.*; Uchibori, Akihiro

Transactions of the American Nuclear Society, 126(1), p.536 - 539, 2022/06

Removal of gaseous radionuclides from the bubbles released into the sodium pool is an important consideration of fuel pin failure accident in sodium-cooled fast reactors. To support modeling of this phenomenon as a part of development of the SRT (Simplified Radionuclide Transport) code in Argonne National Laboratory, numerical analysis of experiment on Iodine gas transport to sodium pool was performed. A proposed evaluation method can be regarded to be reasonably predicting the measured decontamination factors.

Fission barrier height and its angular-momentum dependence have been measured for the first time in the nucleus with the atomic number greater than 100. The entry distribution method, which can determine the excitation energy at which fission starts to dominate the decay process, was applied to $$^{254}$$No. The fission barrier of $$^{254}$$No was found to be 6.6 MeV at zero spin, indicating that the $$^{254}$$No is strongly stabilized by the nuclear shell effects.

Proceedings of 24th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-24) (DVD-ROM), 6 Pages, 2016/06

Under the cooperative effort of the Civil Nuclear Energy R&D Working Group within the framework of the U.S.-Japan bilateral, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) have been performing benchmark study using Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (JSFR) design with metal fuel. In this benchmark study, core characteristic parameters at the beginning of cycle were evaluated by the best estimate deterministic and stochastic methodologies of ANL and JAEA. The results obtained by both institutions are agreed well with less than 200 pcm of discrepancy on the neutron multiplication factor, and less than 3% of discrepancy on the sodium void reactivity, Doppler reactivity, and control rod worth. The results by the stochastic and deterministic were compared in each party to investigate impacts of the deterministic approximation and to understand potential variations in the results due to different calculation methodologies employed. Impacts of the nuclear data libraries were also investigated using a sensitivity analysis methodology.

Proceedings of International Conference on the Physics of Reactors; The Role of Reactor Physics toward a Sustainable Future (PHYSOR 2014) (CD-ROM), 13 Pages, 2014/09

This paper describes details of the IAEA/CRP benchmark calculation by JAEA on the control rod withdrawal test in the Phenix End-of-Life Experiments. The power distribution deviation by the control rod insertion/withdrawal, which is the major target of the benchmark, is well simulated by calculation. In addition to the CRP activities, neutron and photon transport effect is evaluated in the nuclear heating calculation of the benchmark analysis. It is confirmed that the neutron and photon transport effect contributes to the improvement of the absolute power calculation results in the breeder blanket region.

Benchmark calculations on control rod withdrawal tests performed during Phenix End-of-Life experiments

Pascal, V.*; Prulhi$`e$re, G.*; Fontaine, B.*; Devan, K.*; Chellapandi, P.*; Kriventsev, V.*; Monti, S.*; Mikityuk, K.*; Semenov, M.*; Taiwo, T.*; et al.

Proceedings of 2013 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2013) (USB Flash Drive), 11 Pages, 2013/04

The control rod withdrawal test was one of the various Phenix End-of-Life tests performed in 2009. The main goal was to determine the impact of a rod insertion and/or extraction on the radial power distribution in the fissile core at nominal power. The framework of the Technical Working Group on Fast Reactors (TWG-FR) activities in IAEA, decided to launch a Coordinated Research Project (CRP), devoted to benchmarking analyses on the test. The CRP was performed by experts coming from CEA, ANL, IGCAR, IPPE, IRSN, JAEA, KIT and PSI. After a short description of the test conducted in the Phenix reactor, this paper presents some results obtained in the course of the CRP with special emphasis on control rod efficiencies and power deformation by subassemblies. The paper also discusses the discrepancies found when comparing calculated results with experimental data as well as some preliminary conclusions on the source of these discrepancies.

This trilateral study confirms that the fundamental mission of the fast reactor is to achieve significant uranium utilization and waste management goals. Thus, fast spectrum reactor concepts are vital for nuclear fuel cycle sustainability goals. The trilateral countries agree that SFR, GFR and LFR are capable to achieve the goals. However SFR is the most matured technology from the view point of industrial deployment while GFR and LFR still require long term development before a test reactor project could begin. The trilateral common view supports fast reactor project situations in each country.

The available experimental information on $$^{34}$$P has been greatly increased through the analysis of $$gamma$$ decays in coincidence with protons from the interaction of an $$^{18}$$O beam at 24 MeV with an $$^{18}$$O target. Light charged particles from the reaction were detected with Microball, and multiple $$gamma$$ ray coincidences with Gammasphere. Many newly observed $$gamma$$ transitions have been identified and placed in the level scheme. Additionally, for most states, spins have been assigned based on measured $$gamma$$ ray angular distributions while parities were inferred from lifetimes determined through Doppler-broadened line-shape analysis. Most of the states observed have been interpreted in terms of shell-model calculations using the WBP-a and SDPF-NR interactions having one particle in the 0$$f$$$$_{7/2}$$ or 1$$p$$$$_{3/2}$$ orbital. The two calculations agree almost equally well with the data resulting in root-mean-square differences of about 200 keV. However, two of a few high-lying states may be associated with stretched $$pi$$$$f$$$$_{7/2}$$ $$otimes$$ $$nu$$$$f$$$$_{7/2}$$ states, but the calculations over-predict their energies by 2-3 MeV. Furthermore, a newly observed long-lived 7919-keV state is established for which no explanation is available at present.

The local crystal structure of dried and deuterated nano-manganese-oxide powder samples was studied via atomic pair distribution function analysis of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data. The protonated sample shows ultrahigh efficiency as a gold adsorbent even from ppt-level aqueous solutions such as seawater. We show that the nano-manganese-oxide particles have an R-MnO$$_{2}$$-type local crystal structure. The possible role of the protons on the surface of the nano-particles is discussed.

Experimental data on single-particle energies in nuclei around Z=100 and N=152 play an important role to test validity of theoretical predictions for shell structure of superheavy nuclei. We found high-K two-quasiparticle isomers in $$^{252}$$No and $$^{254}$$No, and evaluated energies of proton single-particle orbitals around Z=100. We also found a new high-K three quasiparticle isomer in $$^{257}$$Rf. Energies of neutron single-particle orbitals were also evaluated from experimental data of the $$alpha$$ decay of $$^{257}$$Rf. Comparisons between the present experimental data and various theoretical calculations for the proton single-particle orbitals indicate that the calculation by using the Woods-Saxon potential gives the best agreement with the data.
