Ultra-trace analysis of the nuclides related to nuclear nonproliferation

Shinohara, Nobuo

Radioisotopes, 55(9), p.557 - 565, 2006/09

In this paper, the research activities of JAEA related to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) verification regime are first reported. The main subjects of this paper are (1) an overview of the CTBT verification regime, (2) construction and operation of the radionuclide monitoring stations at Okinawa (RN37) and Takasaki (RN38) and Tokai radionuclide laboratory (RL11), and (3) preparation of the National Data Center (NDC) for environmental radionuclide data. Next topics are related to the technologies for safeguards at Clean Laboratory for Environmental Analysis and Research (CLEAR): (4) current status of environmental sample analysis, (5) "bulk analysis" and (6) "particle analysis" of swipe samples, and (7) analysis of hot cell samples for ultra-trace nuclear materials. The ultra-sensitive radioactivity measurement in the field of CTBT and the ultra-trace analysis of nuclear materials are significant for international contribution to the nuclear non-proliferation.

Status report on Japanese NDC-2; current status of Xenon joint measurement project at Horonobe and Mutsu

Yamamoto, Yoichi; Kijima, Yuichi; Tomita, Yutaka

no journal, ,

Based on repeated DPRK's nuclear tests, the Japanese government contributed funds for the noble gas measurement project in February 2017 for the purpose of strengthening CTBTO's detection capability for nuclear tests. The CTBTO decided to conduct measurements in Hokkaido and Tohoku regions of Japan for the time being, and to enhance JAEA with experiences and performance of measurements in Japan as the responsible organization. In response to this, the JAEA has installed two mobile noble gas measurement systems at Horonobe, Hokkaido and JAEA Ohminato site in Mutsu, Aomori, and been carrying out the joint measurement project with the CTBTO. The current status of this project will be presented.
