The in-plane magnetic structure of a layered system composed of polycrystalline grains smaller than the ferromagnetic exchange length was studied to elucidate the mechanism controlling the magnetic properties considerably different from the bulk using polarized neutron scattering under grazing incidence geometry. The measured result, together with quantitative analysis based on the distorted wave Born approximation, showed that the in-plane length of the area with uniform orientation of moments ranging from 0.5 to 1.1 $$mu$$m is not significantly varied during the process of demagnetization followed by remagnetization. The obtained behavior of moments is in good agreement with the two-dimensional random anisotropy model where coherent magnetization rotation is dominant.

This topical review presents results from neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystals of UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$. We present a detailed and complete characterization of the wave vector- and energy-dependent magnetization dynamics in UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ as measured by neutron inelastic scattering primarily in the form of extensive surveys in energy-momentum space under a wide range of experimental conditions, and put our observations in context with data that has been published previously by two independent groups. This study yields unique insight into the low-temperature ground state, which exhibits a microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, makingUPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ one of the most accessible heavy-fermion superconductors that can be fully characterized by neutron spectroscopy.

Recent 3-dimensional polarization investigations using CRYOPAD at JRR-3, JAEA, will be reviewed. Results on CdCr$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$, a frustrated spin system with pyrochlor structure, and YMnO$$_{3}$$, a multiferroic system with spin chirality, are presented and the importance of this advanced polarization analysis method is discussed.
