Luminescence of water during irradiation with particles having energies below the Cerenkov-light threshold was recently found for various types of radiations. However, the relation between the intensities of Cerenkov light and of the luminescence of water at the beam energy below the Cherenkov threshold is not well known. To clarify this point, we measured the produced light irradiating a water sample with electron beams having maximum energies above and below the Cerenkov-light threshold.

Uno, Sadanori; Hanaya, Hiroaki; Yamagata, Ryohei; Seito, Hajime; Nagao, Yuto; Yamasaki, Shota; Agematsu, Takashi; Kawashima, Ikuo*; Yagi, Norihiko*; Takagi, Masahide*; et al.

JAEA-Review 2015-022, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2014, P. 172, 2016/02

This paper reports on the operation status of the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities and the electron accelerator in fiscal 2014 at the Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute of JAEA. The $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were operated smoothly, whereas the electron accelerator stopped for five months because of successive troubles of discharge due to deterioration of equipment over thirty-four years. The annual operation times of the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities of the first, second and food buildings were 19,907, 13,831 and 7,293 hours, respectively, and that of the electron accelerator was 746 hours. The $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were replenished with new five sources of 2.22 PBq, and twenty old sources were removed for disposal. The electron accelerator was repaired for each trouble, however, the complete recovery has not yet been achieved.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-Pt nanoparticles (NPs) hybrid nanowires were fabricated by high energy ion beam irradiation to PVP thin films including H$$_{2}$$PtCl$$_{6}$$. Single ion hitting caused crosslinking reactions of PVP and reduction of Pt ions within local cylindrical area along an ion trajectory (ion track); therefore, the PVP nanowires including Pt NPs were formed and isolated on Si substrate after wet-development procedure. The number of Pt NPs was easily controlled by the mixed ratio of PVP and H$$_{2}$$PtCl$$_{6}$$. However, increasing the amount of H$$_{2}$$PtCl$$_{6}$$ led to decreasing the radial size and separation of the hybrid nanowires during the wet-development. Additional electron beam irradiation after ion beam improved separation of the nanowires and controlled radial sizes due to an increase in the density of crosslinking points inner the nanowires.

Effect of heavy ion irradiation on optical property of radiation-crosslinked hydroxypropyl cellulose gel containing methacrylate monomers

Hiroki, Akihiro; Yamashita, Shinichi*; Kimura, Atsushi; Nagasawa, Naotsugu; Taguchi, Mitsumasa

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research B, 365(Part B), p.583 - 586, 2015/12

Effects of liner energy transfer (LET) and dose rate on the optical property of polymer gel dosimeters were investigated. The dosimeter prepared by using a radiation-crosslinked hydroxypropyl cellulose gel and methacrylate monomers such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and nonaethylene glycol dimethacrylate showed the color change from colorless to white with the He, C, Fe ions irradiation. Absorbance of the irradiated dosimeters increased with the dose up to 10 Gy. The absorbance of the dosimeters at the same total dose decreased with increasing dose rate in the range of 0.1 to 6.8 Gy/min. The absorbance decreased in order of He, C, Fe ions, which was in agreement with a change of LET. The increase in LET affected the decrease in the number of polymerization initiator such as OH radical and hydrated electron, resulting in the reduction of the absorbance of the dosimeters.

Proceedings of 11th International Workshop on Radiation Effects on Semiconductor Devices for Space Applications (RASEDA-11) (Internet), p.65 - 68, 2015/11

Radiation response is one of the important properties for space solar cells. It should be well understood so as to accurately predict their degradation in orbit and also to improve their radiation tolerance. Recently, a phenomenon, recovery from the radiation degradation by light soaking, on inverted metamorphic (IMM) triple-junction (3J) solar cells was found out. In this work, the light soaking annealing effects on electron irradiated IMM 3J solar cells are reported. IMM 3J solar cells irradiated with 1 MeV electrons with the fluence of 3$$times$$10$$^{15}$$ e$$^-$$/cm$$^2$$ showed the recovery of open-circuit voltage, Voc, up to 43 mV after light (AM0, 1 sun) soaking of 3 hours. The increment of the electroluminescence intensity for InGaP in the IMM 3J cells due to the light soaking suggests that the Voc recovery occurs in InGaP top-cell rather than GaAs middle-cell or InGaAs bottom-cell.

Radiation processing in my research life

Tamada, Masao

Hoshasen Kagaku (Internet), (100), P. 16, 2015/10

Collection of a rare metal form hot spring water attracted medias and had a public response by reports of numerous newspapers and television programs in my 35 years' research and development of radiation processing technologies and its technology management. Collection experiments of the rare metal were carried out in Kusatsu Onsen, Gunma prefecture, where discharge of hot spring water is the largest in Japan. We were on standby 6 am there when morning live broadcast started from 8 am. The invention of emersion grafting solved the problems in the cost reduction of adsorbent production owing to its high grafting yield and led the way for technology transfer of filter for the removal of metal ions in ppb level from semiconductor cleaning liquid and adsorbent for radio-active cesium.

Performance degradation and immediate recovery of a-Si/a-SiGe/a-SiGe triple-junction solar cells due to irradiation of silicon ions, electrons, and protons are investigated. Significant recovery is always observed independent of radiation species and temperature. It is shown that the characteristic time, which is obtained by analyzing the short-circuit current annealing behavior, is an important parameter for practical applications in space. In addition, the radiation degradation mechanism is discussed by analyzing the energy loss process of incident particles (ionizing energy loss: IEL, and non-ionizing energy loss: NIEL) and their relative damage factors. It is determined that ionizing dose is the primarily parameter for electron degradation whereas displacement damage dose is the primarily parameter for proton degradation. The impact of "radiation quality effect" has to be considered to understand the degradation due to Si ion irradiation.

Polymer gel dosimeters based on radiation-crosslinked hydroxypropyl cellulose gel were prepared, which comprised 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (9G) as less toxic monomers and tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphoniumu chloride (THPC) as an antioxidant. The dosimeters exposed to $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-rays became cloudy at only 1 Gy. The irradiated dosimeters were optically analyzed by using a UV-vis spectrophotometer to evaluate dose response. Absorbance of the dosimeters linearly increased in the dose range from 0 to 10 Gy. The dose sensitivity increased with increasing 9G concentration. The dosimeter with 2 wt% HEMA, 3 wt% 9G, and 0.16 wt% THPC exhibited about 0.04 Abs Gy$$^{-1}$$ of the dose sensitivity. The dose sensitivity of the dosimeters was also enhanced by increment in THPC, reached about 0.06 Abs Gy$$^{-1}$$ at 0.40 wt% THPC.
