Here we develop a method using quasielastic neutron scattering, combined with small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic light scattering, to evaluate segmental motions of proteins as well as diffusion of the entire molecules and local side-chain motions. We apply this method to RNase A under the unfolded and molten-globule (MG) states. The diffusion coefficients arising from the segmental motions are evaluated and found to be different between the unfolded and MG states. The values obtained here are consistent with those obtained using the fluorescence-based techniques. These results demonstrate not only feasibility of this method but also usefulness to characterize the behavior of proteins under various disordered states.

Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:100(Environmental Sciences)The maximum-likelihood expectation maximization (ML-EM) method is expected to improve the accuracy of airborne radiation monitoring using an unmanned aerial vehicle. The accuracy of the ML-EM method depends on various parameters, including detector efficiency, attenuation factor, and shielding factor. In this study, we evaluate the shielding factor of trees based on several field radiation measurements. From the actual measurement, the shielding factors were well correlated with the heights of the trees. The evaluated shielding factors were applied to the ML-EM method in conjunction with the measured data obtained from above the Fukushima forest. Compared with the conventional methods used for calculating the dose rate, the proposed method is found to be more reliable.

Syn. These results imply that fibril formation of
Syn requires not only the enhanced local motions but also the segmental motions such that the proper inter-molecular interactions are possible.

. The streamwise velocity was measured by laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV). The new procedure to correct the measurement volume effect of LDV is suggested and we discuss turbulence intensity issues such as the inner peak Reynolds number dependence and the outer logarithmic behavior, it was found that these characteristic behaviors are consistent with previous turbulence studies.

Spatial resolution effect of LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) on the time-averaged statistics is presented in high Reynolds number turbulent pipe flow. Employing PDF (Probability Density Function) of streamwise velocity, we report the study of overestimation of time-averaged statistics based on the size of measurement volume. We proposed a simple equation to estimate their spatial resolution effect. Using the proposed equation, the measurement position and the measurement volume calculated precisely based on experimental setup, it was found that the correction for spatial resolution effect is possible. Analyzing the pipe flow data measured by LDV, we estimated the expected turbulence intensity profile. The validity of the present correction method was confirmed by comparing the correction result based on the low-resolution experimental result with the high-resolution experimental result.

level. Simulation for the lower radiation power fractions of 0.8-0.9 was also performed, and physics issues of the short super-X divertor are discussed.
