Suppression of decay widths in singly heavy baryons induced by the $$U_A(1)$$ anomaly

We study strong and radiative decays of excited singly heavy baryons using an effective chiral Lagrangian based on the diquark picture. The effective Lagrangian contains a $$U_A(1)$$ anomaly term, which is found to suppress the decay width of $$Lambda_Q(1/2^-) to Lambda_Q(1/2^+)eta$$.

We show that boron-doped epitaxial graphene can be successfully grown by thermal decomposition of a boron carbide thin film, which can also be epitaxially grown on a silicon carbide substrate. The interfaces of B$$_{4}$$C on SiC and graphene on B$$_{4}$$C had a fixed orientation relation, having a local stable structure with no dangling bonds. The first carbon layer on B$$_{4}$$C acts as a buffer layer, and the overlaying carbon layers are graphene. Graphene on B$$_{4}$$C was highly boron doped, and the hole concentration could be controlled over a wide range of 2$$times$$10$$^{13}$$ to 2$$times$$10$$^{15}$$ cm$$^{-2}$$. Highly boron-doped graphene exhibited a spin-glass behavior, which suggests the presence of local antiferromagnetic ordering in the spin-frustration system. Thermal decomposition of carbides holds the promise of being a technique to obtain a new class of wafer-scale functional epitaxial graphene for various applications.

Using a chiral effective theory of diquarks, we analyze the spectrum and structure of diquark and heavy baryons consisting of diquarks. $$U_A(1)$$ anomaly is considered in the chiral Lagrangian and its effects are studied.

Characterization of the dynamics of disordered polypeptide chains is required to elucidate the behavior of intrinsically disordered proteins and proteins under non-native states related to the folding process. Here we develop a method using quasielastic neutron scattering, combined with small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic light scattering, to evaluate segmental motions of proteins as well as diffusion of the entire molecules and local side-chain motions. We apply this method to RNase A under the unfolded and molten-globule (MG) states. The diffusion coefficients arising from the segmental motions are evaluated and found to be different between the unfolded and MG states. The values obtained here are consistent with those obtained using the fluorescence-based techniques. These results demonstrate not only feasibility of this method but also usefulness to characterize the behavior of proteins under various disordered states.

Application of the forest shielding factor to the maximum-likelihood expectation maximization method for airborne radiation monitoring

The maximum-likelihood expectation maximization (ML-EM) method is expected to improve the accuracy of airborne radiation monitoring using an unmanned aerial vehicle. The accuracy of the ML-EM method depends on various parameters, including detector efficiency, attenuation factor, and shielding factor. In this study, we evaluate the shielding factor of trees based on several field radiation measurements. From the actual measurement, the shielding factors were well correlated with the heights of the trees. The evaluated shielding factors were applied to the ML-EM method in conjunction with the measured data obtained from above the Fukushima forest. Compared with the conventional methods used for calculating the dose rate, the proposed method is found to be more reliable.

$$alpha$$-synuclein ($$alpha$$Syn) is an intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) with unknown function. $$alpha$$Syn is known to form amyloid fibrils, which are implicated with the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and other synucleinopathies. Elucidating the mechanism of fibril formation of $$alpha$$Syn is therefore important for understanding the mechanism of the pathogenesis of these diseases. Here, using the quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques, we investigated the dynamic and structural properties of $$alpha$$Syn. These results imply that fibril formation of $$alpha$$Syn requires not only the enhanced local motions but also the segmental motions such that the proper inter-molecular interactions are possible.

Turbulence intensity profile in high Reynolds number pipe flow

This paper reports characteristics of turbulence intensity profile obtained in high Reynolds number actual flow facility in Japan. The experiments were performed in a pipe flow with water, and the friction Reynolds number was varied up to $$Re_{tau}$$ = 2.0 $$times$$ 10$$^{4}$$. The streamwise velocity was measured by laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV). The new procedure to correct the measurement volume effect of LDV is suggested and we discuss turbulence intensity issues such as the inner peak Reynolds number dependence and the outer logarithmic behavior, it was found that these characteristic behaviors are consistent with previous turbulence studies.

A Correction method based on probability density function and measurement volume for turbulence intensity profile measured by LDV in turbulent pipe flow

Spatial resolution effect of LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) on the time-averaged statistics is presented in high Reynolds number turbulent pipe flow. Employing PDF (Probability Density Function) of streamwise velocity, we report the study of overestimation of time-averaged statistics based on the size of measurement volume. We proposed a simple equation to estimate their spatial resolution effect. Using the proposed equation, the measurement position and the measurement volume calculated precisely based on experimental setup, it was found that the correction for spatial resolution effect is possible. Analyzing the pipe flow data measured by LDV, we estimated the expected turbulence intensity profile. The validity of the present correction method was confirmed by comparing the correction result based on the low-resolution experimental result with the high-resolution experimental result.

Arrangements of interlink divertor coils and divertor geometries for short super-X was proposed as the Demo advanced divertor design. Performance of plasma detachment under the large heat flux was investigated to optimize the divertor design, using SONIC simulation with Ar impurity seeding, where Pout = 500 MW, ne = 7$$times$$10$$^{19}$$ m$$^{-3}$$ at the core-edge boundary and the same diffusion coefficients for ITER simulation. Effects on the plasma temperature and density distributions were compared to the conventional divertor. The first run results with the same radiation power fraction of 0.92 in the conventional divertor showed that full detached plasma is produced, the maximum radiation region was maintained upstream the divertor target, and both the plasma heat load plus radiation load at the target was reduced to 10 MWmm$$^{-2}$$ level. Simulation for the lower radiation power fractions of 0.8-0.9 was also performed, and physics issues of the short super-X divertor are discussed.
