Flow separation at inlet causing transition and intermittency in circular pipe flow

Ogawa, Masuro*

JAEA-Technology 2019-010, 22 Pages, 2019/07

JAEA-Technology-2019-010.pdf:1.5MB

Transition phenomena from laminar to turbulent flow are roughly classified into three categories. Circular pipe flow of the third category is linearly stable against any small disturbance, despite that flow actually transitions and transitional flow exhibits intermittency. These are among major challenges that are yet to be resolved in fluid dynamics. Thus, author proposes hypothesis as follows; "Flow in a circular pipe transitions from laminar flow because of vortices released from separation bubble forming in vicinity of inlet of pipe, and transitional flow becomes intermittent because vortex-shedding is intermittent." Present hypothesis can easily explain why linear stability theory has not been able to predict transition in circular pipe flow, why circular pipe flow actually transitions, why transitional flow actually exhibits intermittency even due to small disturbance, and why numerical analysis has not been able to predict intermittency of transitional flow in circular pipe.

Alicyclic polyimides (APIs) were successfully applied to radiation-induced graft polymerization for developing polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cells. The grafting into fully aromatized polyimide barely proceeded (grafting degrees (GDs) of less than 5%), whereas that of styrene into the API films proceeded with styrene GDs of up to 70%. In combination of electron spin resonance measurements and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy, the radical species was identified as a long-lived intermediate and 10% of the radicals were consumed as grafting initiators. The moderate reaction conditions allowed for selective sulfonation on the polystyrene grafts, and not on the API substrates, to give API-based polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) with ion exchange capacities (IEC) of 1.7-2.8 mmol/g. The PEMs exhibited appropriate proton conductivity and low water uptake, together with excellent mechanical properties, compared with conventional PEMs such as Nafion.

Separation in $$varepsilon$$-phase of BiPb alloy under mega-gravity

Atomic sedimentation in solid occurs under mega-gravity treatment. As the result, partially melt-growth in $$varepsilon$$-phase of BiPb-alloy occurs. Small difference of densities between fully hcp structure of Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$ and that of partially defected Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{(7-delta)}$$ are enhanced under mega-gravity, and cause the separation of the $$varepsilon$$-phase. Superconducting properties differs between the separated two phases.

We have performed an X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy measurement of 91$$%$$Pb(Zn$$_{1/3}$$Nb$$_{2/3}$$)O$$_{3}$$-9$$%$$PbTiO$$_{3}$$ and found a slow structural fluctuation in time near $$T_{rm C}$$. The slow fluctuation consists of long-term and short-term fluctuations. We have derived the short-term fluctuation from the intensity fluctuations and found out the relaxation time to be an order of 10s. It is suggested that the slow fluctuation is owing to the competition between macroscopic tetragonal symmetry and the microscopic orthorhombic symmetry. The competition should be a main reason for the low-frequency dielectric permittivity.

The local crystal structure of dried and deuterated nano-manganese-oxide powder samples was studied via atomic pair distribution function analysis of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data. The protonated sample shows ultrahigh efficiency as a gold adsorbent even from ppt-level aqueous solutions such as seawater. We show that the nano-manganese-oxide particles have an R-MnO$$_{2}$$-type local crystal structure. The possible role of the protons on the surface of the nano-particles is discussed.

Long-lived intermediates in radiation-induced reactions of alicyclic polyimides films

Park, J.*; Enomoto, Kazuyuki; Yamashita, Takashi*; Takagi, Yasuyuki*; Todaka, Katsunori*; Maekawa, Yasunari

Journal of Photopolymer Science and Technology, 22(3), p.285 - 287, 2009/08

Alicyclic Polyimide (A-PI) films were utilized as a substrate of radiation-induced polymerization to prepare PEM for fuel cells. We successfully prepared the A-PI- PEM by radiation-induced grafting of styrene into A-PI films and subsequent sulfonation. The obtained A-PI-PEM has higher ion conductivity and mechanical and thermal properties, compared with conventional PEM (Nafion). Furthermore, the long-lived intermediates in irradiated A-PI films were observed in the UV-VIS spectra. In comparison with the decay profile of ESR spectra of irradiated A-PI films, the initiation radicals (600, 420 nm) and radical anion (720 nm) can be characterized in terms of the graft polymerization mechanism of A-PI films.
