Promising NDA technologies for material accountancy of nuclear material in debris of melted fuel of Fukushima-Daiichi NPP

Seya, Michio; Harada, Hideo; Kitatani, Fumito; Koizumi, Mitsuo; Tsuchiya, Harufumi; Hajima, Ryoichi; Hayakawa, Takehito; Shizuma, Toshiyuki; Angell, C.; Bolind, A.

Proceedings of 35th ESARDA Annual Meeting (Internet), 9 Pages, 2013/05

This introductory paper presents two promising NDA technologies for nuclear material accountancy of melted fuel debris of Fukushima Daiichi NPP, which JAEA has been developing basic part of them. One of the two is Neutron Resonance Densitometry based on NRTA and NRCA utilizing the Time of Flight method, which is intended for the analysis of particle-like debris. We JAEA and JRC-IRMM have started collaboration on NRD since May 2012. This paper describes the proposed NRD very roughly, while the some of the papers show the details of this method. Another NDA technology uses LCS $$gamma$$-rays to analyse nuclear material in cut / small rock-like debris. The application of the Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence method using LCS $$gamma$$-rays is presented here very roughly. Last 2 papers in this series show in detail the demonstration system of generation of intense mono-energetic $$gamma$$-rays using Energy Recovery Linac and laser storing cavity and measurement methods.

Charged particle and photon interactions with matter; Recent advances, applications, and interfaces

Hatano, Yoshihiko; Katsumura, Yosuke; Mozumder, A.*

Charged Particle and Photon Interactions with Matter; Recent Advances, Applications, and Interfaces, 1045 Pages, 2010/12

The edition of this book has been motivated by strongly positive comments on the former edition of the book with a similar title "Charged Particle and Photon Interactions with Matter. Chemical, Physicochemical, and Biological Consequences with Applications.", eds. A.Mozumder and Y.Hatano, Marcel Dekker, New York (2004), which was motivated by a long term (1985-1995) IAEA-project to survey the basic research of the entitled subjects accomplished in the past 100 years after the big findings of ionizing radiation by Curie and Roentgen. The editors received soon after the publication of the former version the strongly positive comments on it from international academic communities asking them to edit further the latter version to survey further the recent advances with future perspectives, applications, and interfaces. Upon these requests, therefore, this book with 36 chapters has been edited.

Pu standard material preparation in Japan

no journal, ,

In order to obtain reliable accountancy analysis results, IDMS is applied at most of the Pu handling facilities in Japan. Reference materials, referred to as LSD spikes were developed to allow facilities, regulatory and safeguards organizations to accurately measure nuclear materials. Because of expected difficulties in the long term supply of Pu reference materials, which are the main source for LSD spike preparation, the JAEA decided to evaluate the possibility of using domestically available MOX as a Pu source material. JAEA-PFDC started to produce and certify Pu reference materials that are suitable for use in producing LSD spikes in collaboration with the US DOE-NBL. From the MOX-Pu characterized in 2008, two types of the LSD spikes were prepared and distributed for verification. The detailed purification procedure, results of the intercomparison of LSD spikes and interim intercomparison of the MOX-Pu prepared in 2012 will be presented.
