Vacancy defects in GaCrN grown by molecular beam epitaxy have been characterized by energy variable positron beam. Both positron lifetime and the Doppler broadening of annihilation ray (DBAR) measurements show that the GaCrN film grown at low 540C contains vacancy defects. The observed vacancy defects are identified as eight-vacancy clusters. Although the Si doping reduces such vacancy clusters probably due to the occupation of Ga sites, another type of vacancy defects still survives. From the detailed theoretical calculation, the residual vacancy defects are attributable to SiGa-VN complexes.

A heavy-ion-pulse radiolysis technology was developed using a single-photon-counting system. In the system, the ion beam was injected a thin scintillator before irradiating the sample. The light emitted from the scintillator by the ion irradiation was used as analyzing source to detect the absorption of primary species in water. Measurement of time-dependent absorption of hydrated electrons in water was achieved using the system, which demonstrates the usefulness of this technique.

Gelation of the polymer along the ion track results in cross-linking to produce nano-wires with size and number density controllable by selecting appropriate ion beam characteristics and polymer materials. Ion bombardment of polycarbosilane (PCS), PCS-polyvinylsilane blend polymer, and polymethylphenylsilane produces nano-wires with radii of 30 nm depending on the type of ion beam. The difference in size is shown to be related to the efficiency of the cross-linking reaction considering the deposited energy distribution along the ion tracks.

We have succeeded in synthesizing the silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires from polycarbosilane (PCS) using MeV-order heavy-ion beam irradiation technique. PCS was crosslinked along ion tracks of nano-size in diameter through the whole thickness of PCS thin film. Nanowires were developed on the surface of the substrate by dissolution and washing away of uncrosslinked polymer by solvent. Subsequent pyrolysis converted polymeric into inorganic SiC nanowires. The diameter of nanowires was depended on LET (liner energy transfer), molecular weight and cross-linking efficiency of PCS.

Reaction behaviors of radiolysis products in mixtures of different ionic liquids containing thiocyanate anion were studied by using pulse radiolysis technique. Dimer radical ion of thiocyanate in the visible range and electron in the near-infrared range were observed in the ns-pulse radiolysis to measure their yields and reactions. The formations of products increased with increasing the thiocyanate concentration, regardless of kinds of cations in the mixture. The products were also observed in the ps-pulse radiolysis to clarify their formation pathways.
