Mechanical Engineering Journal (Internet), 7(3), p.19-00489_1 - 19-00489_16, 2020/06

The authors are developing the design concept of pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) that addresses Japan's specific siting conditions such as earthquakes and meets safety design criteria (SDC) and safety design guidelines (SDGs) for Generation IV SFRs. The development of this concept will broaden not only options for reactor types in Japan but also the range and depth of international cooperation. A design concept of 1,500 MWt (650 MWe) class pool-type SFR was thought up by applying design technology obtained from the design of advanced loop-type SFR, named JSFR, equipped with safety measures that reflect results from the feasibility study on commercialized fast reactor cycle systems and fast reactor cycle technology development, improved maintainability and repairability, and lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants accident.

Shibata, Keiichi; Iwamoto, Nobuyuki; Kunieda, Satoshi; Minato, Futoshi; Iwamoto, Osamu

JAEA-Conf 2016-004, p.47 - 52, 2016/09

It is required to estimate radioactive products accurately for the decommissioning of LWRs. We have developed the neutron-induced activation cross-section file for this purpose. The products consist of 227 nuclides with half-lives larger than 30 days and 12 nuclides with very long half-lives. Target nuclei were selected by considering possible paths leading to the required products. The activation cross sections of these targets were taken from JENDL-4.0, JENDL/A-96 and the post JENDL-4.0 evaluations. As a result, we produced the activation cross-section file with 302 nuclides. Comparing with other evaluations, there exists a large difference especially for the capture cross sections leading to meta-stable states. The data will be released in FY2016 after achieving further improvements.

Okumura, Keisuke; Kojima, Kensuke; Tanaka, Kenichi*

JAEA-Conf 2015-003, p.43 - 47, 2016/03

In the safety assessment concerning disposal of radioactive wastes generated in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, it is necessary to evaluate the radionuclide inventory produced by the activation of structured materials. For this purpose, we have to pay much attention to the activation of many impurities irradiated in various neutron spectra depending on their positions and materials. Therefore, accurate activation cross-section data are necessary for many nuclides and reactions. A new multi-group neutron activation cross-section library (MAXS) was developed based on the recent nuclear data JENDL-4.0 and JEFF-3.0/A to apply it to the activation calculations for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The library contains cross-sections and isomeric ratios for many reactions such as (n,$$gamma$$), (n,f), (n,2n), (n,3n), (n,p), (n,$$alpha$$), (n,d), (n,t), (n,n$$alpha$$), (n,np), and so on, for 779 nuclides, in the 199-energy group structure of VITAMIN-B6.

JAEA-Research-2013-038.pdf:3.15MB

Accurate information on main generation pathways of activation products is important to improve the accuracy of predicting the concentrations of activation products. Using ORIGEN2 and ORLIBJ40, which is a set of the cross section libraries based on JENDL-4.0, the initial compositions and the cross sections which influence on the concentrations of activation products were clarified by executing the sensitivity analyses on them. Activations of cladding tubes, end-plugs and spacers of fuel assemblies and channel boxes, which were composed of Zircaloy, SUS304, and Inconel-718, were analyzed. The main generation pathways of some significant activation products were summarized from the results of sensitivity analyses.

ATW; International Journal for Nuclear Power, 57(3), p.163 - 168, 2012/03

Fast reactor development experiences and status in Japan are summarized. The undergoing FaCT project is pursuing commercialization of fast reactor cycle system around 2050 under cooperation of MEXT, METI, utilities, venders and JAEA. As results of the FaCT Phase I, feasibility of the key technologies for JSFR has been evaluated and the project is waiting for launching the phase II due to the Tohoku large earthquake. It is considered that the nuclear development policy might be affected by the Tohoku large Earthquake/Tsunami in Japan. Nevertheless the significance of nuclear energy will not be changed and thus we will focus on the issues learnt from Fukushima accidents and reflect into the improvement of the safety of Monju and the safety design criteria for the next generation fast reactor systems.

Eto, Masao*; Kamishima, Yoshio*; Okamura, Shigeki*; Watanabe, Osamu*; Oyama, Kazuhiro*; Negishi, Kazuo; Kotake, Shoji*; Sakamoto, Yoshihiko; Kamide, Hideki

Proceedings of International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles (FR 2009) (CD-ROM), 10 Pages, 2012/00

In the JSFR design, the diameter of the Reactor Vessel (RV) shall be minimized and the reactor internal structures shall be simplified for reduction in construction cost. The reduction in the RV diameter is achieved by adopting an advanced refueling system and the hot RV with high temperature wall. The flow velocity in the reactor upper plenum increases because the diameter of the RV is decreased. As the result, the coolant flow field in reactor upper plenum is severe. The optimization of the coolant flow field in the reactor upper plenum was carried out for prevention the cover gas entrainment and the vortex cavitations at the hot leg intake. In addition, structural integrities for seismic loadings and thermal loadings were evaluated because the design seismic loading was highly increased and the vessel wall is directly exposed to the thermal transients of the upper plenum. This paper describes the characteristics and the results of the design study of the reactor system.

Okamura, Shigeki*; Eto, Masao*; Kamishima, Yoshio*; Negishi, Kazuo; Sakamoto, Yoshihiko; Kitamura, Seiji; Kotake, Shoji*

Proceedings of International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles (FR 2009) (CD-ROM), 10 Pages, 2012/00

This paper describes the seismic design of JSFR, which includes the seismic condition, the seismic isolation system and the seismic evaluation of primary component. JSFR employs a seismic isolation system to mitigate the earthquake force. The design seismic loading is made more severe than ever since Niigata-ken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake in 2007. The earthquake force loaded on the primary components has to be mitigated more than that of the previous seismic isolation system. We examined the advanced seismic isolation system by optimizing the performance of the previous seismic isolation system considering the natural frequency of the primary components. The advanced seismic isolation system for SFR was adopted laminated rubber bearings which are thicker than that of the previous, as well as oil dampers. The seismic evaluation of nuclear reactor components under applying the advanced seismic isolation system was performed; the performance of the system was confirmed.

Proceedings of 2011 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP '11) (CD-ROM), p.479 - 486, 2011/05

A conceptual design study and related R&D on a commercial-base large-scale Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (JSFR) have been carried out in the framework of the Fast Reactor Cycle Technology development (FaCT) project. As a next generation plant, JSFR adopts a number of innovative technologies in order to achieve economic competitiveness, enhanced reliability and safety. This paper describes the current results of the ongoing conceptual design study on the JSFR core. The most important point in the core design is to achieve a high core average burn-up around 150 GWd/t, assuming the ODS steel utilization as the cladding material. Another design target for the breeding ratio is intended to have some flexibility and is set at from around 1.0 to 1.2 under the design philosophy of the compatible fuel assembly among them. Also, the fuel composition is considered to have some variation range based on the wide variety of the spent fuel composition expected to be treated during the LWR to FBR transition period. The core design study performed in the FaCT project has clarified the feasibility of the JSFR core concept, which is based on the high internal conversion ratio type core using a large fuel rod diameter around 10 mm and satisfies a number of design targets and requirements including ones mentioned above.

Development of advanced loop-type fast reactor in Japan; Progress of design study based on preliminary assessment results

Sakamoto, Yoshihiko; Kotake, Shoji; Aoto, Kazumi; Toda, Mikio*

Proceedings of 18th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-18) (CD-ROM), 9 Pages, 2010/05

JAEA is now performing a FaCT project. The first milestone is in 2010; decisions about whether or not to adopt innovative technologies in the JSFR design will be made in the year. Preliminary assessment is underway to produce recommendations for final discussion. This paper describes some important progress in the preliminary assessment. As for the reactor system design, structural integrity against both thermal stress and seismic force was investigated. Then, the specification of the reactor system was established. Also, investigation of design options to extend a design margin against seismic force has been suggested. Regarding thermal hydraulics issues, design measures have been introduced to restrain cover gas entrainment and vortex cavitations. Further investigation is now in progress for design optimization or improvement of preventive effect. Concerning the piping design of primary cooling circuit, the creep strength reduction by Type-IV damage was taken into account.
