The workshop on "Multiple Prompt Gamma-ray Analysis" was held on February 19, 2008 at Tokai. It is based on a project, "Development of real time, non destructive ultra sensitive elemental analysis using multiple gamma-ray detections and prompt gamma-ray analysis and its application to real samples", one of the High Priority Cooperative Research Programs performed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency and the University of Tokyo. This report presents the papers and the materials of 9 presentations in the workshop.

Uptake of uranium by spinach grown in andosols accumulating trace amounts of fertilizer-derived uranium

Yamaguchi, Noriko*; Watanabe, Yoko; Kawasaki, Akira*; Inoue, Chiaki*

Environmental Radiochemical Analysis III, p.52 - 57, 2007/00

Long-term agricultural practices result in the accumulation of uranium (U) in plowed soils, as phosphate fertilizers contain about 90$$sim$$740 mg/kg of uranium as impurity. It is difficult to evaluate whether or not fertilizer-derived U affect public dose of U through agricultural products because U is ubiquitous elements in the soil environment. However, chenopodiaceous plants such as spinach are known to uptake higher amounts of U than the other vegetables and crops. In order to assess the potential risks caused by trace U present in agricultural fields, we investigated U uptake by spinach grown in soil of elevated concentration of U possibly due to phosphorus fertilization.

Radiotracer-imaging studies for solution of cadmium contamination of rice grain

Fujimaki, Shu

no journal, ,

Atomic energy contributes to environmental conservation with radiation applications as well as nuclear power. Contamination of rice grain by cadmium is one of the major environmental and agricultural problems in Japan. Our group has been elucidating the process of cadmium movement from the soil to the rice grain through the living rice plant using positron-emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS). Based on the results, now we are starting to develop a crop for decontamination of the soil.

Non-invasive imaging of long-distance transport of cadmium from culture to spikelet in rice plant

Fujimaki, Shu

This workshop on phytoremediation of heavy-metal polluted soil is held by the collaborative research program for severe environmental pollution between Japan Science and Technology Agency and National Natural Science Foundation of China, and a program by Ministry of Science and Technology of P. R. China. We have established a quantitative model of dynamics of cadmium, one of the most serious pollutants in Japan and China, in rice with visualization of cadmium radiotracer in plant bodies using a positron-emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS). This presentation will be given as an invited lecture.

PETIS has been applied for analyses of cadmium transport from the root organ to the grains in rice plants in previous studies. In this study, we first realized direct imaging and quantitative analysis of the dynamic process of cadmium transport from hydroponic culture to shoot via root organ. When a radiotracer is applied to plant roots for imaging experiments, it has been usual that the region of application is shielded or set off from the field of view because of too high radioactivity there. We successfully obtained serial quantitative images by developing suitable vessels for observation and arranging best radioactivity of the tracer. High-Cd-accumulating lines of rice and Sedum, a hyper accumulator plant for heavy metals, were subjected to this experimental system and analyzed for their abilities of Cd uptake.
