Raman spectroscopy of eutectic melting between boride granule and stainless steel for sodium-cooled fast reactors

Fukai, Hirofumi*; Furuya, Masahiro*; Yamano, Hidemasa

Nuclear Engineering and Technology, 55(3), p.902 - 907, 2023/03

 Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:63.33(Nuclear Science & Technology)

This paper addresses reaction products and their distribution of the eutectic melting/solidifying reaction of boron carbide (B$$_{4}$$C) and stainless-steel (SS). The influence of the existence of carbon on the B$$_{4}$$C-SS eutectic reaction was investigated by comparing the iron boride (FeB)-SS reaction by Raman spectroscopy with Multivariate Curve Resolution (MCR) analysis. The scanning electron microscopy with dispersive X-ray spectrometer was also used to investigate the elemental information of the pure metals such as Cr, Ni, and Fe. In the B$$_{4}$$C-SS samples, a new layer was formed between B$$_{4}$$C/SS interface, and the layer was confirmed that the formed layer corresponded to amorphous carbon (graphite) or FeB or Fe$$_{2}$$B. In contrast, a new layer was not clearly formed between FeB and SS interface in the FeB-SS samples.

Determination of alkali and alkaline earth elements in radioactive waste generated from reprocessing plant by liquid electrode plasma optical emission spectrometry

Yamamoto, Masahiko; Do, V. K.; Taguchi, Shigeo; Kuno, Takehiko; Takamura, Yuzuru*

Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, 327(1), p.433 - 444, 2021/01

A simple, practical, and reliable analytical method for determination of Na, K, Ca, Sr, and Ba by liquid electrode plasma optical emission spectrometry is developed. Appropriate emission lines for quantification, interferences from co-existing elements, and effect of measurement conditions with cell damage have been investigated. The spike and recovery tests using actual sample have been performed for method validation, and negligible sample matrix effect has been observed. Consequently, the method is successfully applied to several radioactive wastes. The obtained data have been agreed well with data from computer calculation and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry within 10% difference.

Effect of liquid-sheet thickness on detection sensitivity for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy of aqueous solution

For aqueous-solution-based elemental analysis, we used a thin liquid sheet ($$mu$$m-scale thickness) in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy with nanosecond laser pulses. Laser-induced plasma is emitted by focusing a pulsed Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) on a 5- to 80-$$mu$$m-thick liquid sheet in air. To optimize the conditions for detecting elements, we studied how the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) for H$$alpha$$ Balmer and Na-neutral emission lines depends on the liquid-sheet thickness. The SBR of the H$$alpha$$ Balmer and Na-neutral lines was maximized for a sheet thickness of $$sim$$20 $$mu$$m at the laser energy of 100 mJ. The hydrodynamics of liquid flow induced by the laser pulse was analyzed by laser flash shadowgraph imaging. Time-resolved observation of the hydrodynamics and plasma emission suggests that the dependence of the SBR on the liquid-sheet thickness is correlated with the volume of flowing liquid that interacts with the laser pulses.

The measurement condition by spectrophotometry was evaluated to measure Np content in MOX fuel containing Np. The Np concentration was obtained by measuring the 727nm absorption peak, after the valence of Np in the sample solution was adjusted to the Np(Ⅳ). The calibration curve showed the linearity up to Np concentration 0.8mg/ml. Though Pu and U quantity were respectively added to the Np solution to 30 times and 60 times of Np concentration, there was no effect to the Np analysis. By using this method, relative standard deviation (RSD) of the analyzed values of Np content for 2%Np - MOX fuel was about 4%. In addition, It was confirmed that the Np content could be measured without separating Np from Pu and U. This method can be sufficiently applied as a quick simple method to analyze Np content in MOX fuel containing Np.

lt is well known that solute atoms are segregated on surface, grain boundary, etc. and composition changed partially in irradiated austenitic stainless steel. For understanding radiation induced segregation (RIS), we adopt a Fe-15Cr-20Ni-x (x: Si, Mo) which is basically alloy system in PNC1520, and size of Si, Mo are different from matrix atoms to investigate RIS behaviors. The specimens were irradiated by "Joyo" fast reactor that irradiation condition is 3.5 $$times$$ 10$$^{26}$$ n/m$$^{2}$$ (E>0.1Mev) at 476$$^{circ}$$C. After irradiation, the specimen were observed and analyzed with EDS (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscope) of 400kV TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope). The behavior of RIS depends on size of solute atoms of alloy. For example, oversized atoms are decreased and undersized atoms are increased in sink. RIS of voids are as same as or more than grain boundaries and smaller than precipitates. The void denuded zone was existed nearby G.B. in case of combinations between the grains from G.B.0ne of the reasons in this, the voids swepted by moving G.B. in radiation induced G.B. migration.

Study on the nuclide behavior in nuclear fuel recycling system

JNC TJ9400 2000-003, 36 Pages, 2000/02

JNC-TJ9400-2000-003.pdf:1.36MB

For establishing a recycling system based on low-decontamination, the distribution behaviors of radionuclides in the process are essential information for the design of the system. Molybdenum and palladium are less radioactive fission products, but attention should be paid to them because they are likely to extremely affect the performance of the recycled fuels. In this context, in this study, the extraction behaviors of molybdenum and palladium under conditions of PUREX and TRUEX extraction process were experimentally studied, and their chemical mechanisms were discussed. In cojunction with the extraction experiments, absorption spectrometry was applied to identify the related species and the extraction mechanism. As a result, knowledge for the distribution characteristics of molybdenum and palladium in PUREX and TRUEX process was reinforced.
