JAEA has been conducting the Instructor Training Program (ITP) since 1996 under the auspices of MEXT to contribute to human resource development in currently 11 Asian countries in the field of radiation utilization for seeking peaceful use of nuclear energy. ITP consists of Instructor Training Course (ITC), Follow-up Training Course (FTC) and Nuclear Technology Seminars. In the ITP, trainings or seminars relating to technology for nuclear utilization are held in Japan by inviting nuclear related people from Asian countries to Japan and after that, the past trainees are supported during FTC by dispatching Japanese specialists to Asian countries. News Letter is also prepared to provide the broad range of information obtained through the trainings for local people near NPPs in Japan. The present report describes the activities of FY2014 ITP and future challenges for improving ITP more effectively.

At J-PARC, 3 GeV proton beam with power of 1MW is delivered to the spallation neutron source (JSNS) through beam transport line called 3NBT. At the high power accelerator facilities even a small abnormal event has a possibility to be critical so that the beam control system is crucial. In order to find tiny anomaly, rapid data analysis system is required. We developed control and data analysis system based on the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) and Control System Studio (CSS). To carry out beam tuning efficiently, the beam control system based on the Strategic Accelerator Design (SAD) code has been developed. With the several shots of beam and by the one click of operational panel of the screen, required magnet field can be calculated and set automatically. Also we developed automated e-mail system to announce the abnormal event to the experts persons. With these systems, we can reduce both beam tuning time and down time.

The Plutonium Fuel Fabrication Facility (PFFF) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency is now in its decommissioning phase. In the PFFF, terminated gloveboxes have been dismantled. Gloveboxes to be dismantled are surrounded by a plastic enclosure to prevent contamination from being spread into process room. Dismantling operations for gloveboxes are performed manually by workers, each wearing an air-feed suit. However, the mental and physical loads placed on workers wearing the air-feed suits are intensively high. Therefore, R&Ds on new dismantling technologies including utilization of heavy machines covered with plastic enclosure for anti-contamination have been started to reduce the potential risks associated with workers and decommissioning costs. In this paper, the status of decommissioning of the PFFF and the overview of developed dismantling technologies for -tight gloveboxes are described.

Times Cited Count:19 Percentile:62.37(Engineering, Biomedical)Low reproducibility of dose distribution in inhomogeneous regions such as soft matter near bones is known with the simple dose analysis currently adopted in treatment planning of particle cancer therapy. Therefore a treatment planning system based on Monte Carlo simulation having better accuracy is highly desired. In order to assess the simulation accuracy of a Monte Carlo simulation code in situations closely related to medical application, we performed a comparison of dose distribution in a biological sample obtained by experiment and that by simulation. In particular, we irradiate a carbon beam on a biological sample composed of fresh chicken meat and bones, with a PAGAT gel dosimeter placed behind it, and compare the complex dose distribution in the gel dosimeter created by the beam passing through the inhomogeneous sample. Monte Carlo simulation using PHITS code was conducted by reconstructing the biological sample from its computed tomography images. The simulation accurately reproduced the experimental distal edge structure of the dose distribution with an accuracy under about 2 mm.

In order to examine the feasibility of the experiment, we measured the background rates of different detector candidate sites, which are located at the third floor of the MLF, using a detector consisting of plastic scintillators with a fiducial mass of 500 kg. The gammas and neutrons induced by the beam as well as the backgrounds from the cosmic rays were measured, and the results are described in this article.

Plutonium Fuel Fabrication Facility is now in a decommissioning phase. In the facility, stabilizing activities of nuclear material residuals remained and the gloveboxes dismantling activities have been carried out simultaneously. Glovebox dismantling activities are performed manually by a worker wearing air-feed suit with mechanical tools in a plastic enclosure which is constructed around the glove boxes for preventing spread of contamination. However, the mental load and physical load of the worker are intensively high. Therefore, worker's safely issue still exists and need to be resolved. Moreover, occupational time for the worker is restricted to only one hour per day, which in turn make shortening schedule and cost savings almost impossible. R&D of new dismantling methods including application of heavy equipment with anti-contamination measure to strengthen the work performance in the plastic enclosures has been started to reduce the above mentioned potential risks and costs.

Times Cited Count:23 Percentile:98.4(Physics, Applied)By using new Compton camera consisting of silicon double-sided strip detector (Si-DSD) and CdTe-DSD developed for the ASTRO-H mission, an experiment was conducted to study its feasibility for advanced hotspot monitoring. In addition to hotspot imaging already provided by commercial imaging systems, the identification of the variety of radioisotopes is realized thanks to the good energy resolution given by the semiconductor detectors. Three radioisotopes of Ba (356 keV), Na (511 keV) and Cs (662 keV) were individually imaged by applying event selection in the energy window and the -ray images was correctly overlapped by an optical picture. The detection efficiency of 1.6810 (effective area: 1.710 cm) and angular resolution of 3.8 were obtained by stacking five detector modules for 662 keV -ray. The higher detection efficiency required in a specific use can be achieved by stacking more detector modules.
