Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

Indeed, a magnetic long-range order was observed under pressure above 1-2 GPa. To investigate magnetic ground state, we have carried out muon spin relaxation measurements and confirm non-magnetic ground state with fluctuating tiny magnetic moment.

A plan to produce Lu with high purity by using enriched Yb samples with irradiation of deuteron beams in accelerators has been discussed. However, since the other Yb isotopes contained in the Yb sample interacts with deuterons, Lu isotopes other than Lu are produced as impurities. Since the purity of Lu is important for medical use, a method to evaluate the impurity of Lu has been required. In this study, we proposed a new method to estimate production yields of each Lu isotopes in Yb samples with arbitrary isotopic compositions by using excitation functions of Yb()Lu reactions and the particle transport calculation code PHITS. The method plays an important role in discussing the isotopic composition of enriched samples to produce high-purity Lu using accelerators.

By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for and orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)% was determined for . Our finding of such a small component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in B. The present work gives the smallest - or -orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features and implies that the dominant occupation of or orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of a neutron halo.

Surface temperatures range between -40C in winter and 30C in summer at this site. In parallel experiments, a fibre-optic cable sensor system (multi-mode, GI50/125, dual core; 3.4mm), monitored at high resolution, (0.5m intervals at every 30min) ground surface temperatures across the landscape. In addition, a high-resolution vertical profile was acquired at one-metre height above the upper subsurface. The total cable ran 2.7km with about 2.0km monitoring a horizontal surface path. Sections of the cable sensor were deployed in vertical coil configurations (1.2m high) to measure temperature profiles from the ground up at 5mm intervals. Measurements were made continuously over a 2-year interval from October 2012 to October 2014. Vegetation at the site (Poker Flat Research Range) consists primarily of black spruce underlain by permafrost. Land cover types within the study area were classified into six descriptive categories: relict thermokarst lake, open moss, shrub, deciduous forest, sparse conifer forest, and dense conifer forest. The horizontal temperature data exhibited spatial and temporal changes within the observed diurnal and seasonal variations. Differences in snow pack evolution and insulation effects co-varied with the land cover types. The apparatus used to monitor vertical temperature profiles generated high-resolution (ca. 5mm) data for air column, snow cover, and ground surface. This research also identified several technical challenges in deploying and maintaining a DTS system under subarctic environments.

In the experimental fast reactor Joyo, it was confirmed that the top of the irradiation test sub-assembly of material testing rig named "MARICO-2" had been broken and bent onto the in-vessel storage rack as an obstacle and had damaged the upper core structure (UCS). As the result, for Joyo restart, it was necessary to replace the damaged UCS and to retrieve the bent sub-assembly. This paper describes in-vessel repair techniques performed in the retrieval work of the obstacle inside of the reactor vessel. The devices which were prepared for this work demonstrated expected performance under the environmental conditions of an SFR such as high temperature and radiation dose, and the work was completed in 2014. The successful operation of this retrieval work of the damaged component inside of a reactor vessel will contribute to the development of in-service inspections and repair technics in an SFR.

In the experimental fast reactor Joyo, failure of disconnecting the irradiation test subassembly MARICO-2 (Material Testing Irradiation Rig with Temperature Control) was occurred and top of the MARICO-2 test subassembly was bent onto the in-vessel storage rack. As a result of this incident, the operation area of rotating plug for the fuel exchange in Joyo is limited. The replacement of the damaged UCS and retrieving the bent MARICO-2 are required to Joyo restoration. This report describes about investigations and some tests to know the status of MARICO-2 test subassembly and the optimized detail design of retrieval device reflecting those results.

In-Vessel Observations (IVO) techniques for Sodium cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs) are important in confirming its safety and integrity. In order to secure the reliability of IVO techniques, it was necessary to demonstrate the performance under the actual reactor environment with high temperature, high radiation dose and remained sodium. During the investigation of an incident occurred in Joyo, the following observation systems were specifically developed for Joyo. And the following two observations were conducted. (1) Simple overhead observation using a standard video camera for the top of the sub-assemblies and the in-vessel storage rack (2) Narrow space observation using remote handling device equipped with radiation-resistant fiberscope for the bottom face of the upper core structure. As a result, the observations under the actual reactor environment were successfully made even in the narrow space in the reactor vessel and the results provided useful information on incident investigations and planning of restoration work.

The radiation characteristics of image fiber and light guide fiber were evaluated to develop a high radiation resistant fiberscope for the fast reactor in-vessel observation. It is known that a pure silica core fiber has a high radiation resistance and radiation resistance is influenced with impurities in silica. Moreover it is necessary to change the clad material of the light guide fiber because that of the current light guide fiber is acrylate, which is weak against radiation. Hence the improved fibers consist of a pure silica core with 1,000 ppm OH and fluorine-doped silica clad. As a result of a irradiation test, we confirm that OH inhibits the generation of the precursor by irradiation. About the clad material, we confirmed that the transmission loss of the fluorine-doped silica clad fiber is smaller than that of the acrylate clad fiber. About the mechanical strength of a fiber, we confirmed that there is no weakening the strength of the fiber and no exfoliation of the coating from the glass. In this study, we discovered the fiber which consists of a pure silica core with 1,000 ppm OH and fluorine-doped silica clad has a high radiation resistance and it is possible to observe using this fiber under the 200 C after 510 Gy irradiation.

In fuel irradiation transient tests using a boiling water capsule, a dilution tube has been installed in the boiling water capsule in order to detect fission products (FP) from an irradiated fuel, in case of the fuel failure during the transient, by a radiation monitor located outside the reactor. When the fuel failure occurs, the released FP flows out from the capsule through the dilution tube. The dilution tube is designed to minimize the released FP that can be detected by the radiation monitor located outside the reactor. This report summarized the measurement results of the dilution tube installed in the boiling water capsule.

The in-vessel gamma dose rate was measured in the experimental fast reactor Joyo to evaluate the activation of reactor structural components and the radiation exposure of the fiber scope used for in-vessel visual inspection. The measurement system, which requires a wide sensitivity range and high durability in a high-temperature environment, was specifically developed for use in the sodium cooled fast reactor. Using this system, the in-vessel gamma dose rate with cooling times of 450 and 720 days after reactor shutdown was measured in Joyo, which has been operated for 71,000 hours over approximately 30 years. The gamma dose rate was calculated using QAD-CGGP2 code with the gamma source intensity obtained by the ORIGEN2 code. The neutron flux used as input to the ORIGEN2 was evaluated by the Joyo dosimetry method. The ratio between the calculated and experimental values ranged from 1.1 to 2.4, confirming the accuracy of gamma dose rate and component activation calculation.

Japanese activities of test facilities in IFMIF-EVEDA (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities) project have three subjects of engineering design of post irradiation examination (PIE) facilities, small specimen test technique (SSTT), and engineering design of high flux test module (HFTM), and this paper is summarized about present status. Functional analysis and design of 2-D and 3-D models of PIE facility were performed. In HFTM, as materials of heater, W-3Re alloy and/or SiC/SiC composite were selected in the points of high temperature materials, fabrication technology and some suitable properties such as resistance of thermal shock, high temperature re-crystallization, ductility, resistance of irradiation degradation, and low-activation. In SSTT, a test machine of fracture toughness was designed and developed for small specimens with 10 mm square, and it had high accuracy controllability for stress and displacement.
