Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

Times Cited Count:8 Percentile:55.71(Physics, Multidisciplinary)Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

In-Vessel Transfer Machine (IVTM) came off from the gripper claw in the Auxiliary Handling Machine (AHM) and fell at a height of approximately two meters during a withdrawal work of the IVTM in the Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) Monju. The withdrawal work of IVTM from the reactor vessel by AHM was performed. The work, however, was suspended due to the excessive load alarm. To grasp the situation of the IVTM fall, observation of the machine was necessary. An interior observation and an exterior observation of the dropped IVTM were performed. As a result of these observations, the radially deformed lower end of the upper guide tube was observed at the connection part, and it was jammed in the fuel throat sleeve when the dropped IVTM was withdrawn. Based on this information, the IVTM could be safely withdrawn from the reactor vessel with the fuel throat sleeve.

JAEA and USDOE (Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)) have been collaborating on spent fuel measurements with a PNAR/SINRD NDA instrument at Fugen, in the course of the NGSI Spent Fuel Nondestructive Assay Project. In this collaboration, LANL's role has been to design and fabricate the detector (integrated PNAR and SINRD system), while JAEA's role has been to undertake the installation of the detector at the appropriate position in the spent fuel pool and to prepare for the actual measurements. In this paper we report the rehearsal of the measurement using a mock-up detector and a dummy fuel assembly in December 2012 and the plan of actual measurements in June 2013 (at the time of submission of this paper).

Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:24.86(Instruments & Instrumentation)For the J-PARC E40 experiment which aims to measure differential cross-sections of Sp scatterings, a system to detect scattered proton from Sp scatterings is under development. The detection system consists of scintillation fibers with a MPPC readout. A prototype and a readout electronics for MPPC have already been developed. The prototype consisting of a scintillation fiber tracker and a BGO calorimeter was tested with a proton beam of 80 MeV. Energy resolutions of the tracker of 22.0% (s) and the calorimeter of 1.0% (s) were obtained for 1 MeV and 70 MeV energy deposit, respectively. The prototype readout electronics has an ASIC for multichannel operation, EASIROC, and a Silicon TCP (SiTCP) interface to communicate with a DAQ system. Its data transfer rate measured was 14 kHz. Required performances for the prototype system have been achieved except for the energy resolution of the prototype fiber tracker.

The loop will hold 2.5 tons of lithium. Since lithium is specified by Japanese law as a dangerous substance, countermeasures which assumed a lithium leak incident and various abnormal issues are indispensable. This paper describes about the safety principles and measures for lithium leaks of the IFMIF/EVEDA lithium test loop decided under the detailed design process.

The object of this task, Development of Li safety handing technology in EVEDA LF-5, is to dedicate data needed for design relating safety and Li treatment and impurity monitoring. This task consists of (a) experiments of lithium fire, (b) chemical analysis of impurity in lithium and (c) experiments of lithium chemical reaction. The validation test on the lithium fire and the preliminary tests on lithium impurity and lithium chemical reaction were started in 2009. This paper describes the current status of the lithium safety handling task.

The EVEDA lithium test loop is constructed at the Oarai Research and Development Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Since lithium is specified as a dangerous substance by a Japanese law, the countermeasure which assumed the lithium combustion incident is indispensable. In this experimental study, the fire-extinguishing behavior of four kinds of fire extinguishers - dryness sand, pearlite, Natrex-L and Natrex-M - to burning lithium was examined. In addition, the effect of depth of lithium pool on the fire-extinguishing performance of the candidate fire extinguisher was investigated to determine the amount of the fire extinguisher placed at the EVEDA lithium test loop.

This report summarizes the results of basic experiment on fire-extinguishing of the lithium. In this experiment, the fire-extinguishing behavior of the fire extinguishers to the lithium was experimentally confirmed, and the fire extinguisher for the liquid lithium test loop is proposed. In addition, the fire-extinguishing performance for the determination of the amount of dispositions of the fire extinguisher was experimentally estimated.

In-vessel transfer machine (IVTM) dropped down about 2 m when hanged up by the gripper of the auxiliary handling machine (AHM) succeeding to the refueling in August 11-17. The weight of the IVTM is ca. 3.3 ton.
