We have developed an innovative $$gamma$$-ray detector apparatus for neutron capture reactions at JAEA research reactor JRR-3. This apparatus comprises HPGe detectors and BGO suppressors, and achieves high energy resolution as compared with the normally used scintillation detectors. We use this apparatus for neutron capture cross section measurement needed for the designing of innovative nuclear reactors (Fast Breeding Reactors, Accelerator Driven Systems and so forth), and for trace element analysis based on prompt $$gamma$$-ray analysis and neutron activation analysis with multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection.
