By using the ultrafast pulse radiolysis system based on pulse-and-probe method, initial G-values of solvated electrons in water and variety kinds of alcohols were estimated. The results show that G-values of di-hydric alcohols were systematically high. It is believed that the molecular structure should play a very important role. In fact, for the di-hydric alcohols, the absorption at near IR by pre-solvated electron was turned out to be quite small, indicating that the absorption of presolvation state will exist at lower wavelength than mono-hydric alcohols. This strongly suggests that, in polyols, due to the higher concentration of OH-sites, more stable presolvated states, or even pre-existing trapping sites, are created. Then, since the electrons can easily find their trapping sites, the escaping probability of electrons from geminate ion recombinations will be enhanced, resulting in the higher G-values.
