Radiolysis of water with heavy ions of energies up to 28 GeV at HIMAC

Understanding of water radiolysis with low LET radiations as well as with high LET ones is essential to clarify radiation damage to DNA. Measurements of water decomposition yields have been determined with highly energetic heavy-ion beams at HIMAC in the National Institute of Radiological Sciences. In parallel to the measurements, Monte-Carlo simulations have also been performed. Finally, characteristics of intra-track reactions induced by heavy ion beams were discussed in terms of the spatial track structure and LET dependence of radiation-induced biological phenomena.
