In Rokkasho village in northeast Japan, the Broader Approach project has started based on the agreement protocol between EU and Japan. For ITER, performance tests on a Toroidal Field coil conductor of Japan has started in a EU test facility, SULTAN, and that on a Poloidal Field Insert Coil of EU has started in a test facility in JAEA. The development of 170 GHz ITER gyrotron has been progressed to achieve a 1 MW for 800 sec operation in JAEA. A negative ion source for ITER Neutral Beam system has achieved an extraction beam current density of 140 A/m$$^{2}$$ at an acceleration voltage of 800 keV. In LHD, the stable discharge with the central density reaching 1$$times$$10E21 m$$^{-3}$$ has been realized by formation of an Internal Diffusion Barrier. The high beta of 5 %, long-pulse operations near 1 hour with 1.6 GJ inputs with ICH and ECH, and sub-cooled operations of SC magnets to improve cryogenic stability have been achieved. In Test Blanket Modules project, Japan is leading the water-cooled ceramic breeder blanket concept, while other advanced concepts are also studied. A new Japan-US collaboration program, TITAN, has started in 2007, which major emphases are tritium and thermo-fluid control in fusion-relevant conditions.
