Time resolved measurement of radiation-induced reactions in aqueous solutions containing silica particles by pulse radiolysis technique

Kumagai, Yuta   ; Nagaishi, Ryuji ; Yamada, Reiji; Muroya, Yusa*; Katsumura, Yosuke

Radiation-induced reductions in aqueous solutions are promoted by addition of ceramic oxide particles. To study the mechanism of this effect, kinetics of transient species produced by irradiation of a short pulse of electron beam were measured by time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. As a model of oxide particles nano-sized colloidal silica solutions were prepared by sol-gel method and used in irradiation experiments. The results showed that colloidal silica is reactive with OH radical and prevent oxidations by scavenging OH radical.
